After the birth of Claire Drought, it was just a few short months until Elena Mercer's second child was born. The same doctor was gotten for the birth which made Kyle wonder if it was a coincidence that he was available each time and didn't have other things going on, or if he was assigned this part of the town by the lord.
'I wonder if they made any statues of me...' Kyle sometimes thought. Sure, he was killed by his friend Asura, but he was probably made out to be the biggest hero of them all and would have statues twice the size of Asura's.
'Too bad I don't have any descendants...' Kyle was never able to find a wife in his previous life, and was hoping to have a legion of women following him after killing the demon king.
'And I don't think I had any brothers or sisters...' Kyle left his mountain village in his previous life at the age of 15 and his parents did not have any other children. It was unlikely that they had even one more after he left.
'I know what I have to do with this life. I need to focus on my own family. Loving family members are enough for me.' Something might have changed Kyle after assisting with the birth of Claire, and witnessing the birth of his brother.
'For people to love something even though it has done nothing but cause them pain...' Kyle remembered how much Kathy and Elena both hurt while giving birth.
'They must be good people.' Kyle made his choice and was going to stick with it. The Mercer's were not idiots or hillbillies or any other degenerate sub-class. They were good people.
The Mercer family had another addition though. On December 8th, Elena gave birth to Kyle's new younger brother Dave. Kyle had never had a brother before, so he was not quite sure what to do with it, or what to do in the future, but he hoped it would come naturally.
'It might be like caring for an orphan...' Kyle tried to think of the most relevant experience to having a younger brother. Orphanages were frequent customers of the adventurer's guild because of how many people lived in the same house, and so when one got lost or got sick, it was a low rank quest that Kyle could quickly complete.
----------------------------------------
"Happy Birthday!" The adults in the room said. It was Kyle's 3rd birthday and everyone in his family and the Drought family was there.
Both Claire and Dave made efforts at saying 'happy birthday', but birthday was one of those words not said very much. Claire would be turning 1 year old in just 17 more days, and Dave had a few months till his first birthday, but neither of those are celebrated.
At that cue, Kyle blew out the single candle in the cake they had. It had no icing and was probably a plain white cake because the outside was brown.
'Please don't spit on the cake, please don't spit on the cake...' Kyle could not help but think as he prepared to blow out the candle. It was the first time he had gotten cake in his new life, and in his past life he had only eaten cake at the king's banquet for the heroes. It was strange how this family had things normally reserved for high class people, when they obviously weren't.
The candle went out and everyone who could cheered, while those who could not just tried to make louder sounds than normal. Elena pulled the candle out from the cake and set it on the table, then cut the cake.
'You gotta be kidding me...' Kyle thought as he looked at the lie in front of him.
'That's not a cake, that's a loaf of bread!' Kyle wanted to yell, but he did not want to be so rude. He had not seen bread in this life yet, but it was plentiful before the demon invasion.
'How can you not know what bread is?' Kyle asked inside his head as Elena put thin slices of bread onto plates and handed them to everyone there after putting a plate in front of Kyle.
There were not enough seats for everyone at the table, so Kyle, Claire, Dave, and Elena were at the table while Fred, Paul, and Kathy sat on the couch. Everyone happily had their fake-cake but Kyle was frowning.
"Eat the cake Kyle, it's soft and tasty." Elena said while picking up her slice and taking a bite.
"Yes mother." Kyle smiled and picked up the slice of bread and took a bite. It was surprisingly good.
"The merchants have to import the ingredients for the cake from very far away," Elena said while eating.
'Where could we be that a wheat field is very far away?' Kyle thought as he ate. He decided it was probably better to not ask questions like that though.
"so every time you eat cake, it's like traveling to a faraway place." Elena finished.
'A faraway place huh?' Kyle ate his bread and thought about faraway places. He had been across the entire human kingdom, but never into the elven kingdom or dwarven kingdom. The elven kingdom was supposed to be covered in trees, so they were unlikely to have wheat, and the dwarven kingdom was nearly all mountains and the snowy north, so once again, no wheat.
----------------------------------------
After eating the fake-cake, the chairs were rearranged so that they were all facing the couch, and the seating was rearranged so that Kyle sat in the middle of the couch, Fred sat on his left, and Elena sat on his right while holding Dave. It was time to open presents.
"Kyle, being 3 years old is big milestone in any man's life." Fred started to say to him.
'No it's not, i'm only 3, you just said it yourself.' Kyle did not start his magic and sword training until he was 5 years old in his previous life. Muscles needed to grow correctly, and though training techniques was possible, being able to hold a heavy sword was very difficult, not to mention a shield.
"You need to start thinking about your future." Fred continued to say.
'Not me, I'm going to take it EZ.' Kyle was certain of this. His days of being a hero were behind him. 'A few high ranking quest for the adventurer's guild under a fake name, I'll be set for life.'
High level quest by the adventurer's guild were normally done by parties of over 6 people, and even then the reward would be enough for them to live off for a while. When the demonic army invaded, many adventurers were killed, so for the past three years and however long it took him to be reborn the quest were probably piling up.
"That's why I got you this." And then Fred reached under the couch and pulled out a sword. The sword was made from iron and had a short grip and small wrist-guard. It was most likely one of the ones used by the guards along with a shield.

As Fred pulled out the sword, everyone in the room had a reaction. Dave and Claire were both looking wondrously at the stick of metal, perhaps not knowing what it was used for, but seeing it presented in such a way was enough to gain their attention. Dave and Claire might have liked it, but that was the end of the positive reception to Fred pulling a sword out from under the couch to give to his 3 year old son as a birthday gift.
Paul, who was also a guard, put his hands to his face and muttered, "He was serious about that?". Paul remembered a few days prior when Fred was asking the people at the guard barracks what a good gift for his son might be, and one of drunks suggested he get his son a sword. Fred must have ran with idea and took an old sword that was rusted and damaged beyond being useful in combat and took it home with him to give as the gift.
Kathy had a look on her face as if saying 'are you sure that is a good idea?' as she looked at the sword. Being a woman and a housewife, Kathy did not have an interest in swords and thus only viewed them as a weapon. Even if not being used to attack people, it was not unheard of to hear about people being seriously injured while training with the sword, and when Kathy thought about what she would do if her child got hurt while practicing with the sword, she could have fainted.
Elena however had the most dynamic and worst expression to the present. At first when Fred was talking about 3 years old being an important milestone, she was in agreement. Kyle had surely almost died once, so reaching 3 years old was a blessing. Three years old was also the time when most childhood diseases stopped being such a huge problem, and most birth defects became visible. Kyle had none of these things.
But then Fred said that Kyle needed to prepare for the future. Elena knew a little about her childhood, however those memories did not include when she was 3. Kyle surely would not remember being 3 years old and thus any preparations made now would have to be done without everyday activity, or extremely easy to do. If Kyle was going to be doing anything for his future, it would be brushing his teeth before bed, or cleaning plates after a meal.
And then to make things worse, Fred pulled out the sword. Elena's emotions could be described in one word: Fury.
"What do you think you are doing pulling out a sword!" Elena yelled at Fred.
"Elena my lovely wife, wouldn't you want Kyle to train with the sword and have a wife just as beautiful?" Fred said, smiling as he presented the blade. It was very rusted and had obvious nicks and dents in the blade.
"He's 3 years old Fred! He won't be getting a wife for at least 10 more years!" Elena was furious at both the gift and the excuse. Not only was Fred saying that their child would need skills with the blade to get a wife, but he was also saying that about his own marriage with her.
'Why would I want a wife at 13 years old?' Kyle could not help but think while his parents were arguing in a room with their closest friends and children. Kyle was a master at 3 fighting types, so if it was skill that wooed women, he would have them. Even if that did not work, he could use the Charm status on them, though it would wear off in about 10 minutes.
"It's never too early to train with the sword Elena, he could become a master swordsman worthy of the Legion of Holy Swords!" Fred had more reasons for Kyle to train with the sword though.
'I am already a master of swords, but I guess I need to pretend that I learned somewhere.' Kyle though, and then he decided to speak up.
"I want to learn swords." Kyle turned to his mother and said. Elena was in disbelief and did not say anything, so Kyle got up from the couch and held out his hand from the handle of the sword.
"See, he wants to learn!" Fred happily said as he handed the handle to Kyle.
'You really can't beat dwarven craftsmanship.' Kyle thought as he held the sword in his hand, but this sword was not dwarven made. 'This sword is shit.' The obvious defects were already known to Kyle, but when he held it, two new things came to Kyle's mind.
For one, the sword was balanced all wrong. Kyle had used a perfectly balanced, hardest steel possible to craft sword, made in the dwarven kingdom and then transported thousands of miles to be used by the heroes in his past life. Even after 6 years of fighting demons with skin as hard as iron, he did not need to sharpen it. Compared to that sword, the one Kyle held in his hand was shit-tier.
Secondly, Kyle was too small to hold a sword this size. The sword was made for an adult who used it with one hand, so it was smaller than most swords, but it was still not 3 year old training sword size. It would have to be at least half the weight for Kyle to be able to lift it over his head.
"He can't even pick the sword up Fred!" Elena resumed her assault when Kyle dropped the tip of the sword to the ground after receiving it. Truthfully, Kyle wanted to say the same thing but Kathy beat him to it.
"He'll grow into it." Fred shrugged and ignored his hysterical wife. "Go head, swing the sword Kyle."
"I can't. It's too heavy." Kyle really was not able to move it without putting his whole body into it. At most he would be able to swing it in a circle around himself as he spun his body.
"See Fred, he can learn swords like everyone else when he turns 8."
"It is probably best to wait, Fred." Paul who had not said anything and was Fred's senior at the guard barracks spoke up. Paul had not taught anyone how to use swords, but even he knew this.
"I have no allies!" Fred cried as he took the sword from Kyle who was struggling just to keep it off the ground. It was probably best to not have the tip in the wooden floor either.
"But I want to learn swords." Kyle said, turning to look at Paul and then Elena. Elena put her arm around Kyle and pulled him a little closer to herself.
"You can learn swords when you turn 8 years old just like everyone else."
----------------------------------------
That night after everyone had left, Fred and Elena were going at it while Fred scolded Elena for her openly disapproving of the sword in front of their friends. Kyle cast deaf on himself and Dave and was able to sleep shortly after they started though.
The next day, Kyle repeated some of the things that Fred said the night before and that caused Elena to give angry looks to Fred and he became thoroughly embarrassed. Needless to say, their nightly activities took a sharp decline with the noise and frequency.
