Arc 1 - 30 - How To Live Without It

Kyle did not go to school that day, but the next day he was there. Unfortunately for him, Beth was not there.

'It's fine, she was probably more scared than me.' Kyle thought as he looked at the empty desk. It was only two days since Beth almost died if not for Kyle having hero level magic, so it would be understandable if she did not come to school for a few days.

Beth not being there was unfortunate because not only was he not able to talk to Beth, he did not have lunch.

'Damn, I should have made more friends.' Kyle looked around the room at the many children eating their boxed lunches, and then down at his own empty desk.

When Kyle left the school and was going to meet Beth at her house, Berry stopped him.

"Hey you, Kyle, Beth doesn't want to see you." Berry was huge. He was not only 10 years old, a whole 2 years older than Kyle, but he stuck out his chest and looked like he would start beating on it at any second.

"Beth was crying all day yesterday and doesn't want to see you." Cory was standing next to Berry, and though Cory was 6, he acted just the same as his older brother.

'Crying all day? I didn't think it would be that bad...' Kyle felt really bad for what he did. It was because of him that the two of them were walking to Beth's home so late at night.

'Well, she did invite herself to come to Claire's every day...' Kyle remembered how 8 months ago Beth got a little jealous and asserted that she too would be coming to Claire's house every day.

'No, I should have been paying better attention.' Kyle was a solo adventurer in his past life, he never worried about friends of his getting hurt in a cave or while walking along a mountain pass. The human kingdom was thousands of miles from end to end, and never did he take someone along for a single mile just to talk. It was careless to think he could relax while on an escort mission.

"I just want to apologize." Kyle tried to reason with Berry and Cory, but he did not know Berry's alternative motive that Cory was blindly following.

"Well, you can't. Beth was really scared the other day from what happened and doesn't want to see anyone, especially you." Berry was just making things up, but once again he did not know how on point he was with the events that happened.

'Was it the frozen bodies?' Kyle had used [Frost] to the level that 3 people were probably dead right now.

'She probably thinks I'm a psycho or something.' Kyle was worried that Beth might not have realized the danger that they were in and when she saw him kill 3 people, she was actually scared of him.

"I'm..." Kyle wanted to say that he was still going to see Beth, but he did not want to scare her more.

"I'm going home." Kyle turned away from Berry and Cory, and then he ran to meet up with Claire who he told to walk home herself.

Claire was a peculiar case. She had a strange dependence on Kyle, but only with proximity. When Kyle was near, she didn't even want to play with him sometimes. She just wanted him in the same room.

This need for a close proximity to Kyle could be put off by making promises of having a close proximity later, or gradually being away for longer periods of time.

The relationship Claire had with Kyle was... the one of a parasite.

"Claire wait!" Kyle ran to catch up with Claire and it was not hard. Claire was not athletic, and it had only been a few minutes since she left the school. She was still in the 3rd district. Claire had friends, so she talked to them before leaving the school without Kyle.

"Kyle, you got here quicker than you said you would." Claire was beaming. Every time Kyle came by, it was a good time.

"I just decided not to do something that's all." Kyle had already ruined his chances for leaving Claire alone for a long amount of time without contact, so seeing her often now was not a problem. He was not going to mage school, so it would be fine either way.

"That's good. You should decide to not do more things when you should be coming home with me." Claire and Kyle walked side by side down the street and made it home without talking to anyone. Kyle was still helping Claire with her subjects and to learn magic, so he would be staying at her house for a while before going straight home.

Claire only used [Flame], but she could use [Fireball] already. She just didn't want to do it and make Kyle think he could stop coming by. Kyle tried to help her learn it that night too, but the room felt empty without Beth.

----------------------------------------

The next day, Beth was not at school again. Kyle decided that she needed her space, and he would not try to see her at her house.

The day after that was the same.

And the day after that.

The whole next week was the same.

Then the next month passed in the same fashion, and school was over. Beth had not come even one more time.

'Beth probably hates me.'

The worse part about not seeing Beth though was that the archetype was messed up. They should not have separated on a bad note. It should have been something that inspired hope.

The childhood friend would work if Beth was happy for having a friend who could deal with 3 thugs all by himself, and later those feeling of admiration turn into love.

On the current path though, Beth was scared of Kyle, and that emotion would only warp into her becoming more scared of him. She would have to hear about him being a good person from someone, and then the 'Maybe it was all a misunderstanding' event could be triggered.

Kyle would have to wait until this event was triggered, and Kyle did not know if Beth had any friends other than him, so he would have to rely on the 'Heard it in passing' triggering method.

Until then, when Beth showed interest in meeting him again, Kyle was going to stay away from her.
