Arc 1 - 37 - Goodbye Thornberry

Arc 1 - 37 - Goodbye Thornberry

Elena took the coins and then Marvin Akira left. Thomas Engen took Kyle's documents from Elena to prove his date of birth, and then the magic card was created. Because the 2 clouds were unknown, they were not on the card. Kyle had not noticed it, but all of his brightness levels were as high as they could go.

Kyle would be able to practice his magic outside of the house now, but he would not immediately come out as the master of all 6 types. He would need to ease into that roll a little at a time.

Elena and Kyle went to a store to buy some new clothes for themselves, and Elena bought a 3,000 coin dress for herself and Kyle got a 600 coin outfit. He was not very picky, and he knew that in only a year the clothes might be too small.

Kyle took charge of keeping the money safe, and he was not going to let anyone get the drop on him again. The two of them got something to eat, but it was not bovine. It was a mysterious steak and some bread. The bread was not as sweet as the ones Elena called cakes though. In total, before leaving the city the two of them spent around 4,200 coins.

On the wagon ride back to Thornberry, two different guards were escorting them, and Douglas' wagon was in the middle. Nothing eventful happened, but the ride was a little rougher and slower because of the cargo in the back of the wagons.

Once back in Thornberry, Elena paid Gorsha a little money as thanks and then she left with Kyle to their house. At the Mercer home, it was only about 18:30, and Fred would be home any minute. Dave was with Kathy, and Fred should be picking him up from there on the way home.

"I won't tell Fred about what happened Kyle." Elena said to Kyle as she sat on the couch. The wagon did not have cushioned seats, and it was a rough ride both ways.

"Not about the bandits or the magic types?" Kyle was only a little worried about his family knowing about his 2 additional magic types. It was not like they would do anything about it.

"Fred needs to know about the magic types and the money, but not about the bandits." Elena took off her shoes and laid back on the couch, shutting her eyes.

"Okay." and then, 20 minutes passed before Fred came home.

"Elena! Kyle! You're both back home." Fred walked in the house while holding Dave's hand, and dropped it when he saw his wife and other son in the room. Kyle was sitting at the table and Elena was laying on the couch, so the first thing Fred did was walk up to Elena and give her a hug. They had been separated for almost 40 hours, which was more than they have had in the last 9 years.

"Fred, we've got big news." Elena was a little sleepy when she tried to speak with Fred. Dave walked over to the table beside Kyle and sat down.

"Welcome back Kyle." He said, not so enthusiastic.

"Hey Dave." Kyle didn't know what to do. Dave did not seem to be happy with him, as if he stole Elena away from him for 2 days.

"What's the big news?" Fred asked Elena and he took a chair from the table and moved it to face Elena on the couch.

"Kyle has full types."

----------------------------------------

POV: Fred Mercer

What? Full types? That's a mage thing I think.... Elena and Kyle went to Vegaville to get the magic card and test his... oh, I understand what it is. Kyle can use the 6 types of magic.

WHOA 6 types! That's more than twice as many as myself or Elena! Forget swords, my boy is going to learn magic!

"And just to have him go to his mage school, the headmaster payed us 40 gold coins." What's that Elena? I think I have something in my ear...

"Fo-fo-fo-forty g-g-g-gold coins?!" Goodbye guardsman job, goodbye poverty, goodbye soup for every meal.

*Gulp*

"I know. You won't have to keep going to the guard job, and can just practice your swords every day." Elena, you understand me so well! I'll be able to train so hard now!

"This is great Kyle!" I should give Kyle a hug too. Forty gold coins....

----------------------------------------

"Alright dad, but the deal was that I had to go to the mage school in exchange for this money."

"Who cares about that? It would be a privilege to go to mage school! And with 6 types, you will have a boundless future. There are no words to say how proud of you I am, Kyle."

"Does anyone know when mage school starts?" Elena asked the question, and they all looked at each other. Nobody knew.

"We'll just ask someone at the school." Fred was usually the one who found out these kinds of things.

The school had a single office that would handle things like who was supposed to attend, the teachers that worked there, and the possibilities for children when they left.

"Yeah, you don't need a job anymore, so it won't be a problem for you to pick up some things around the house." Elena was cheerful about the recent influx of money. To have 40 gold coins was more than she could ever dream of having.

"Alright, I'll resign in tomorrow in the morning." Fred was going to quit his job and live the easy life with Elena. It was all he ever wanted to do, and having a son made it possible.

----------------------------------------

Fred quit his job and learned that mage school started on the 1st Monday of September, a week earlier than the education decree mandatory education schools. Knight's Academy started the same day, but the Knight's Academy did not let out for any break.

There would be a carriage passing Thornberry the day before school started, and it would take potential students to Vegaville for a small fee of just 500 coins.

Once in Vegaville, students would take the carriage or could walk to the mage school and enroll. Someone would take their 50,000 coins and then the students would be tested again for their types and given a room in the dorms.

Kyle would take once suitcase with him, and in it would be two pairs of clothes, the stick Dave gave him for his birthday, and nothing else. Kyle would also be bringing 100 silver coins for his expenses. Kyle was not sure if he had to play the enrolling fee, so he needed at least 50 silver coins.

Before leaving Thornberry though, Kyle would have to say goodbye to Claire. He did not intent to be leaving Thornberry for so long, but he hoped that she would not be too upset without him.

----------------------------------------

"No don't leave!" Claire was very upset and would not let Kyle go. The situation was almost exactly the same from the last time Kyle went to see Claire before he left, except this time she was in front of him.

"I have the string Claire!" Kyle always had the string with him now, and it was around his neck.

"Oh, Kathy?" Kyle was in the Drought's living room and both Kathy and Paul were in the room. They found it hilarious how much Claire missed Kyle when he was gone for only a few days.

"Yes Kyle?" Kathy said while trying not to laugh.

"Elena wanted me to give you these coins. I was given a whole bunch to join the school." Kyle reached into his pocket and pulled out 3 gold coins that Elena had told him to give to Kathy. Without Kathy having gone to Elena's house when she heard about Kyle using magic, Elena might have never gotten Kyle tested for this types.

"Wow, that is 3 gold coins." Kathy looked at the coins in Kyle's hand and took them in her own. She gave a coin to Paul and the two of them looked at the coins.

"Do you know how much money this is Kyle?" Paul had seen 3 gold coins before... in a bank.

"Yeah I know. It's not a big deal though, and Fred was even able to quit his job."

"I thought something was strange." Paul worked with Fred and had seen when Fred went to the captain to resign.

"This is a really big deal!" Claire was not convinced that Kyle leaving was going to be okay. She absolutely would not have it. Claire was not as big as Kyle, but she was still able to shake him around a little when she was upset.

"Claire, do you know how I can be in another city and still be right next to you?" Kyle remembered something the soldiers used to do when far from home.

"What?!" Claire was very exited. To be next to Kyle even when he was in another city would be a miracle.

"It's something called a letter. I write a lot of words onto paper, then I pay someone to deliver it here. You can read the words on the paper and it will be like I am right next to you, even though I am in another city." Kyle's plan was genius. He had never used the system called 'post' in his past life, mainly because his family in the mountain did not have something like an address.

In his past life, Kyle's address was "A house in the mountain village.", but in this life it was "Log cabin #3, south side 2nd district, Thornberry, Vegaland." He would need to check if his house had an actual address though.

"That will work, we are at 564 Oldberry RD. Your address is 560 Oldberry RD." Kathy knew about the post too, and even knew the addresses of the houses on her street.

"But... that's not Kyle..." Claire was not entirely convinced, and just having letter was not as good as the real thing.

"How about we try it for a little bit first Claire? I still have about 15 days before I leave, so I can write a letter to you every day and give it to you to see how it works?" Kyle was not sure what to write about, but he would find something, and every day drop the letter off with Kathy.

"Every day?" Claire backed off a little from Kyle, and he knew she was almost swayed.

"Yep, every single day."

"Well, if it's every day then it's okay." Claire was happy with the resolution.

----------------------------------------

About 15 days later, Kyle successfully not seen Claire for the entire time and when he saw her on the last day, she was fine.

Kyle packed his suitcase and wore the red string, then placed 99 silver coins into his coin pouch. One silver coin had been used on materials to write letters to Claire and had also been placed into the suitcase.

Kyle waited at the north gate very early in the morning and took a last look at the town before he left on the carriage he could see approaching from the west.
