085.3 - Garnedell Proves his Master's Mastery

Joe woke in his bed, clean but still in his clothing. He sat up onto his elbows as he instinctually radiated monster sense and when nothing came back on his monster radar, he instantly relaxed. Outside, the light still clung but dusk lay heavily, darkness soon to overwhelm the light. But it wasn’t the light that woke him. The noise of shouting and revelry came relentlessly through the window. It was not loud, but it was not to be stopped as it thudded into the room and left his room in a dull roaring susurrus of distant noise. Lots of shouting. What’s goin… Oh! Party… fight’s over! Joe reveled in the softness of the bed, the exhaustion of the last seven or eight days of fighting beating his mental state to nothing, but the exhaustion was closer to mental exhaustion than any physical exhaustion. Granted, he was sore, but not much more than was normal from a good heavy workout the day before. It was a good soreness, the kind that left him feeling invigorated and still able to face the day, if just slightly painful. Nor was the exhaustion one of lack of sleep, as he’d slept more than enough each day.

No, the exhaustion was from the mental effort to push through day after day nonstop only to completely collapse in the relief of having made it to the end. It was a bone deep exhaustion softly covered in fluffy exhilarating relief of completion. He basked in it as he listened to the rising and falling shouts of joy from the main city. Any inner clan party was happening pretty far away, considering the soft and muffled nature of the noise. Joe collapsed back onto his bed from his elbows and decided to rest in bed for a bit.

His mind went back to what he normally did in the morning and so he just started practicing his mana and mana point routines while also pulling up his stats and data. He grinned to see how well he’d grown. He spent some time again, trying to figure out what had happened with his explosive growth in his stats, but just couldn’t really figure it out, and honestly, with his stats now so far beyond his base stats, he felt relieved enough to now consider other things. He’d been rather overwhelmed with the upcoming tide and trying to make sure that Garnedell was successful in leveling up commoner as quickly as possible. Really wanted to make sure he had his trust rewarded… especially with how terrified he was… but… can’t go out today… gotta do the party… so… let’s figure out the next plan.

Easy enough for the others: get them swapped to commoner and help them get going up… but probably going to take getting Garnedell up and leveling easily on his own before the other two believe me. So… let’s get him up through to education quick… would be great if we can get him to gifted as well… fifty jobs. Joe paused and took a look at his available jobs list and ran through a quick count. He got to a max of thirty three jobs although four of those jobs were in the citizen line of jobs that he hadn’t leveled but from what he could see, they didn’t seem like useful jobs to pursue. He really didn’t see much use in gypsy, beggar, gambler and falconer. He’d instead went straight to specialist and got that to twenty which inevitably opened up the education, crafting, and nobility trees. And if education is up… the learning in that tree! Would be two birds with one stone, leveling up learning and getting fifty jobs at the same time. Stack up learning on Garnedell… then show him spamming through jobs alone not in a group with him… that might convince the siblings? That… could work. So…

Satisfied with a simple plan in dealing with ‘his apprentices,’ he turned to a plan for himself. Primary goal complete… what’s my second. Head back to home? Get back to Earth? Oh, but… that’s… OK. Gotta be a long term goal, so then we’ll set up sub goals. I’m not going to get back to Earth without some serious tech or magic, although… tech isn’t an option. I’m not going to learn how to build some kind of warp drive, let alone figure out the theory behind the freakin’ thing… or create some kind of sleep thing but that puts me decades… hundreds of years … thousands? I don’t even know… OK.

That’s first thing then, find out where we are or find where Earth is. One of the two. That’s… Joe sighed and grimaced. I’m not going to figure this out very easily either, am I. Yeah, tech’s not going to be the answer, so… magic. Hmm… dig into the mage lines. I’m pretty much done with figuring out the faith lines… maybe start going through each priest line, exploring what each god or goddess does? Don’t wanna go too deep. Get attention that way, but maybe to monk or so? Then I can look at what the different lines do?

Education’s tapped, but get some more learning. Nobility… is a good idea. Grouping… definitely still want to go totally into combat jobs. Crafting… but not really interesting… so, magic and combat then. Anything else? Joe frowned and considered. Ooh… skills.

He sighed deeply in thought, chewing on his cheek a bit while he pursed his lips. Skills… suck here… So… review. Before the weapons and armor skills... I couldn't hold weapons easily. Can’t do armor at all… Then he frowned. But when I got the tonfa… And that was before the all weapons skill... pretty sure... and it never bothered me at all. How… But… it seems … the right time to figure out skills then and time to get skills leveled up… if they’re this crippling. Don’t have to worry about speaking… got my language solved, although it eats up a char: and that’s annoying, but… hmm… I can start sorta leveling it up. Free it up, especially now that I can change jobs so easily. Just change my job to polyglot in the evenings… Joe grimaced when he thought of that, cursing. That… would have been too easy. I’m an idiot! He’d been speaking every evening. Swapping to the job would have been easy, leveling up both his job swapping, if he applied a char: to his job swapping skill as well. He sighed, annoyed with himself, but also a bit satisfied at finding another way to develop himself. That did return his thoughts back to skills, however.

So… other skills… What skills do I need to have and what’s going to happen when I hit my year. Pretty much was explicitly told about my stats naturalizing after a year, but… Joe quickly flipped to his available jobs and swapped out a bunch of them, especially swapping to some theorist jobs and began running through dozens, then hundreds of questions to the help system. Out of all the questions he asked, a good eighty or ninety percent were depressingly unhelpful, bordering on rage inducing. After a lot of arguing and trying to get through the various help and whatever he could think to ask, he’d come to a rather useless conclusion. Anything he wasn’t skilled in required a skill to use. He wasn’t sure what that meant, though. And when he sought further clarity, things just became obtuse or even returning meaningless information.

Joe sighed. Add figuring out skills to the list… and… how it’s going to affect using skills after I’m naturalized… especially if I haven’t found the job for those skills… Joe ground his teeth with some worry. Studying? Is that a skill? Basic math? Joe blinked, narrowing his eyes. OK. That… could be an easy test. I’ve got the job… yeah… right there. So if I don’t level it then try math after naturalizing, will I still be able to do basic mathematics or are the skills going to be ripped from me. Joe breathed deeply. And easy to tell… just do basic addition and subtraction… multiplication… then naturalize… then see if I can do it after. I should be able to get those skills back real fast… and I’ll easily be able to tell how it affects me then… and it won’t kill me to lose my addition and multiplication… just… make sure I can level mathematician that day or something… But...
