062.11 - Meet the Mob Boss?

Gwenvair pursed her lips in thought, “The easiest two options would be to purchase an artifact that allows you to use a weapon of your choice or purchase the gladiator job. Gladiators are able to use any weapon without restriction, although they still do have a weapon skill specific to their job. You are free to use any weapon, but will be restricted from using any weapon skills as the weapon skills are specific to the weapon of that job. That is the same issue as with the artifact. Both options simply allow you to use the weapon, not the skills associated with the weapon. Neither of these are good options, although the artifact is better. Gladiator jobs are very poor in power.

“Honestly, I would simply recommend finding the job that matches your best or preferred weapon and simply pursue that, if you wish a combat job. If you are wealthy enough, purchase the job crystals for the jobs related to your weapon that you wish to use. That is… expensive, though.”

Joe’s frown only grew as he heard her explanation and he finally sighed and shook his head. He didn’t like anything that he was hearing, but if he was lucky, gladiator might be an option for him, if the ability was a skill. Then he could unlock that skill and level it up, or link it with a ‘char’ skill. His frown deepened until he finally shook his head and sighed.

“It seems I have few useful options.”

Gwenvair smiled sadly, “It is the nature of the plane. There are benefits, yes… but the restrictions can be… significant.”

Joe accepted her statement, continuing his questioning, “Then please add anything about criminal jobs, or classes, and the significance of changing those jobs.”

Gwenvair smiled sadly and shook her head, “You know all I have taught so far. There is no secret knowledge horded by clan and noble on this.”

Joe sighed and nodded his head, “OK. I see. Is there anything you believe you could add about jobs or skills?”

Gwenvair sighed slightly, “There is much more that I know, but it would be considered general knowledge known even to the most common of persons. To speak on it would take weeks and months. From what I am learning of you now, and what I have learned of from Kukurnal and my mother, you seem to know more of jobs than we do.”

Joe laughed at this and shook his head, “I can be completely honest when I say what I know is little more than the collection of a few dozen jobs, nothing more. I’m very ill informed when it comes to jobs and skills.”

Gwenvair shrugged with that, “Then we are at an impasse. I have little else to teach you. We can move to titles, if you wish?”

“Hmm…” Joe considered. Absence… should I ask? Garnedell seemed… yeah… maybe not… Joe wasn’t too happy with the limited information he had gained, but then again, it was the least valuable and important set of information he had purchased, according to the pricing they had set with Gwenvair. And honestly, she was right. She didn’t know what he didn’t know, and he didn’t know the lack of his own knowledge as well. He had no way of knowing even what questions to ask. He would need more experience with the system to really know what else he could do or any questions to ask. It was a very straight forward, if limiting system.

Joe nodded, accepting Gwenvair’s offer, “Certainly. What can you tell me of titles.”

She shrugged with this, obviously unhappy with her answer but gave it anyway, “Titles are given for unusual actions taken by the person.”

Joe waited for more, but quickly realized she had nothing else to add, and began to grow irritated, “That’s it?”

She sighed and frowned, “Almost nothing is known about them. People know of them. And some few have been lucky enough to guess at their purpose, function, abilities, or benefits, but most never even know if they have received a title, let alone its function. The fact that you even know of them places you ahead of almost all others. But titles prove to be amongst the greatest mysteries of this system as almost no one knows when they receive a title nor do they understand what it is if they even do recognize that they have received one.

“To know, one must be heralded and heralds are almost always in the employ of the nobility. Even then, the herald only knows the name, not the effects.”

Joe sighed, nodding, “So the herald has a skill capable of seeing the titles of a person.”

She nodded, “The herald is told the titles only, nothing else.”

Joe frowned a bit, “Does the herald need permission to see the titles?”

She frowned at that, uncertain, “I do not believe so. I have been heralded several times and notice no intrusion. The herald knows.”

“Hmm,” Joe pondered, “Then even if I were to ask of titles, or even your titles, you would not know of their abilities.”

“If titles offer skills or abilities, none know. Some only guess, and titles that give benefits exist only as fairy tales in myth.”

“Could I ask after your titles?”

Gwenvair smiled at that then shrugged, “Certainly. I have been heralded the First in Line for Matriarch, Shield of Coushar, Guardian of the People, Wind Princess, Dungeon Destroyer, Dungeon Conqueror, and Killer of Ten Thousand.”

“Huh. Not bad,” Joe offered sincerely, “I’m not sure on the first couple. Those sound like titles given to you as part of being the daughter or clan member of the Galgandar clan. The last are related to monster hunting and dungeon diving.”

Gwenvair’s smile faded as Joe spoke, poorly schooled shock washing over her face, “You seem to know … a lot about titles.”

Joe paused for a bit, taking a moment to ponder. While he knew little of Gwenvair, what he knew of the Matriarch and Gwenvaire showed them to be honorable people. A bit risky… but making a connection with the leadership here… Joe’s thoughts whirled through his options and the consequence, then decided that taking chance wouldn’t be too much of a problem. He’d already revealed the idea of reading to Kukurnal and spoke of quite a few other ideas to him and others, as well as making it a point of looking at the status screen; both his own and others. Maybe… I can say… it’s a skill! That might… Joe made up his mind, cautiously optimistic.

“I cannot offer you much, but I do have a skill that allows me knowledge of titles, if you are willing to share. The downside is that it requires trust and access to your status. If you are unwilling, I can at least share the Killer of Ten Thousand, Dungeon Destroyer, and Dungeon Conqueror titles and their effects as I have these titles as well. If you wish to know more, I will need to see your status.”

Gwenvair leaned forward, seemingly a bit interested but reserved, “I have heard you enjoy looking at the status of others, including random strangers.”

Joe smiled at that, “I’m curious. Or, maybe, I’m a scholar. I learn and grow because of what I learn.”

Her eyes narrowed slightly, “And you are willing to share what you learn?”

Joe smiled at that and shrugged his shoulders, “I told you before. My people believe that knowledge should be free. Ironically, they also believe that people have a right to their personal privacy, so learning of others… I have only ever requested and never forced.”

She pondered Joe’s statement before responding to his first comments, “It seems dangerous in light of any enemies.”

Joe shrugged, “Enemies are always dangerous.”

“And you will maintain my privacy?” she asked with a sly smirk.

Joe laughed, “In this case, yes. Personal privacy is important amongst my people.”

“Your people are strange.”

Joe shrugged again, nothing to offer in return, and stayed silent.

She stared at him for a few moments before finally nodding, accepting his offer, “Then I will impose upon you.”

Joe nodded, “I can show you my status as well, if you wish a fair exchange.”

Her eyes rose at that before she smiled, “It would be interesting to see the status of an Eccentric!”

“I’m not so eccentric as you and your mother believe.”

She laughed at that and easily revealed her status. Joe didn’t look at it, continuing to look into her eyes.

“If you do not wish to show me your personal stats, you can change the…”

She shook head, “No. You may look. You have offered a fair exchange.”

Joe smiled and turned his eyes to look at her stats. They proved interesting but not unusual. That’s… really, really purple! But, certainly much more underwhelming than I was led to believe since she has two jobs, and learning… wow... not bad! And her magic… Nice! Wait! Resistances can… That’s very interesting.

Joe put that little piece of knowledge in the back of his head, curious as to how she had taken a negative hit to her earth resistance, but he didn’t think she would appreciate him pointing out her weakness. He simply nodded, keeping his faced schooled throughout the couple interesting pieces of information he’d learned.

“If you could please press here?” Joe asked, pointing to the blessings… and titles! Seriously! Consistency please!... tab.

She pressed there without showing surprise and he looked at her, raising an eyebrow, interrupting his help for her, “Nobility know of this about the status?”

She smiled at that, shaking her head, “No. Our people learned that there was a strange Eccentric passing around free knowledge and information about the status page!”

“WHO! I want to learn,” Joe jokingly interjected.

She frowned then smiled brightly before chuckling, “You truly are strange.”

Joe shrugged, “Better strange than boring or bored.”

Joe looked at her titles, ignoring her thoughtful look and pointed at one of her titles, “Please press on this title here.”

She pressed on the Killer of Ten Thousand title as he asked and found it identical to his own so explained it quickly, “So, that is the Killer of Ten Thousand. Your growth speed is doubled if you have this title.”

She listened to him politely as he spoke, but when he told her the effects of the title, her calm was shattered, shock inundating her as sat bolt upright.

“What!?”

He smiled, “It’s what I said.”

She said nothing, staring at him for a good several seconds, literally vibrating in her seat for the time she was silent until she finally spoke up, slightly in control of herself once again, “How… certain are you?”

Joe shrugged before replying, “Unless the status is lying to me, one hundred percent. I did test it as I have the title myself, and I did notice a significant change due to this title as well.”

Her calm shattered once again but she quickly recovered, excited and pointed to the next title on her list, pressing it quickly. She got it pretty quick! Joe was quite impressed by how quickly she intuitively understood the display in front of her, and read the next title.
