Chapter 63: Snosum

Chapter 63: Snosum

So, the damned night stripe made off with one of my thrower twiglings, I sent everything else after it and tried desperately to stab it on its way out but it managed to escape my domain only getting a few scratches, agile little fucker. Shortly after, the kidnapped twigling’s base station shriveled up and rotted away, informing me it was dead. After that I spit some more curses at the oversized cat and got back to work making twiglings. I decided to add some more melee twiglings since their numbers took the most hits last fight. I mean it makes sense, they are at the front so they take the most loses, that just means I need more of them. I don't know how long I've been working, but it's dark out now. Currently I have thirty melees and twenty thrower twiglings, all with spears to boot.

Now, where should I put the house I'm going to build for the loot? I can't just leave it laying around after all. Hmm I'll just add it as an extension of my house with its own exterior door. That would be the easiest and most efficient way of doing this currently. No one has entered my area since I took out that last group, you would think they would come looking for their friends but I guess not. Not that there's much left to find, only some blood and shattered wood bits laying around. That reminds me, the corpse flowers mitigate most of the smell but not all of it, so my area is starting to smell. It smells bad, like rotting corpses funny enough. So from now on I’m going to start piling the corpses up about a half a mile away closer to the mountain. I’ll start growing some twiglings out there too to save on space around my pod and protect my stock pile. The smell overall is probably a good thing, it will attract more creatures, which means more exp. Speaking of more exp, here comes some more on a silver platter from the north.

Uh, yea, whole lot of magical freakishness on this one. What appears before me is a small train of animals, five babies and their mother. The things have the body structure and legs of a possum but the skin, eyes, and tail are that of a black snake. Interesting little creature, and unfortunately within my domain. I sharpen the branches above and stab down on the baby last in line in a swift, merciless motion. The only noise being made is a small grunted squeak as the little creature is smashed into the floor by the branch entering the back of its head.

The mother immediately turns around and lets out something between a screech and a hiss while all the other babies start to scatter. They don’t make it far before more branches find their marks, the little things screaming in terror as they realize there is nowhere safe to hide. One by one I strike them down until I get to the last one, the mother suddenly comes from the side and intercepts the branch, knocking it so hard it snaps off even with the reinforcement I’ve put into it. I try again from a different angle, only to have that attempt thwarted by the mother as well. Getting annoyed, I position two branches on either side and attempt to strike in rapid succession. That is also thwarted. Now the baby is curled up and shaking under its mother, while said mother stands poised to counter strike any attacks I may try to launch.

Well this is fuckin annoying. I’ve killed giant bear boars, deer, hell even fucking people with less effort, but this thing is shutting me down so hard I can’t even touch it. It wants to play hard, fine, I’ll play hard. I move a stick into position and hold it, clearly a telegraphed attack and the little creature takes note. Instead of striking I start pumping mana into the branch, and after a dozen seconds or so it reaches maximum reinforcement. The whole time the creature waits, standing ready for my next attempt to snuff out the life of her last little one. But this time I’m not targeting the little one, I aim the branch carefully at the mother and lash out. She jumps to meet the strike, only to be caught surprised when it aims directly for her and fails to break under the force of her attack. The stick impales her, violently piercing and slamming her into the ground and pinning her there. The remaining baby panics, and starts to run away, only to meet the same fate as its siblings.

The mother screams out something in rage and anguish as it attempts to break free of the branch pinning it, clearly hell bent on getting vengeance. It doesn't get to try long, as a second branch comes down and finishes the job, sending the poor creature to a better place to be with its children again.

I stare at the corpses scattered around for a moment before realizing two things. One I need to send out a twigling to gather them all up and start the new stockpile. Two, I might be a heartless bitch now because I felt absolutely nothing while doing that, other than the annoyance of my attacks being thwarted. I wonder when that happened? Probably when I ‘died’, remembering that still gives me the pit in my stomach feeling. Oh well, I’ll just have to distract myself. And the best way to do that is to make more twiglings, double win in my book.
