Chapter 50: Hunting

Twigling (Lesser) (Level: 8)

Twigling (Lesser) (Level: 8)

My twigling army is finally complete, not really but this is all I’m going to be able to build for now. Unless I want to kill some trees I’m out of resources, and I don’t feel like shooting myself in the foot long term here. I’ve been searching my area while waiting for them to finish up, and unfortunately there isn’t jack shit around here aside from the bat dog den. I can probably survive the winter as is, but the trouble is going to come when spring hits, and I want to be ready before then. That means more… everything. But the question is how? There is nothing around here I can kill, no resources to work with for twiglings, and no way to move around. Well I can move around but I’ll lose this huge network area. Then again this area doesn’t have shit in it right now…. Wait, something just entered my range, many somethings.

Spike Antler Deer (Level: 23)

Ahh good, more meat for the grinder, metaphorically speaking. I watch the deer as the herd of four moves through my domain, these are the same type of deer I saw after I just woke up in this world. Ahh the innocence I had then. I wait for the perfect time to strike, but the deer seem to be on guard, probably because this is a creepy ass snow covered forest where monsters dwell. I watch them throughout the day, an hour goes by, then two, as the deer slowly wander through my area. Eventually the light starts to fade behind the horizon, not the mountains, this pass seems to run from east to west, assuming the sun rises in the east in this word. Eventually the deer settle down, laying together in between some trees in the middle of my range.

Now is the time, I deploy the twiglings nearby, ordering them to move quietly. The dumb bundle of sticks proceed to clatter through the forest making a shit ton of noise despite the fact there is a good two feet of snow to silence movement. Right, these things are idiots, but that shouldn’t matter for my plan. Once they are close I’ll open up with a tree attack, then while the deer are distracted by that I’ll have the twiglings flank. Once the remainders are distracted by the twiglings I’ll hit them again using the trees.

Slowly the tree above the lowest level deer starts to grow downwards, the deer puts its head up and snorts, then looks around. It knows something is here, it can’t have survived this long without that sixth sense, unfortunately the creature has looked everywhere but up, the direction my attack is coming from. Suddenly the beast stands, then it stomps it’s foot and snorts again, this time looking in the direction of the twiglings. Unfortunately for the deer, that little move put it within range of my branches.

The author's tale has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

The ends of the branches focus into points, and while the other deer are in the process of rising stab down in an explosion of action. Instantly my target is pierced by the branches in multiple places and collapses back to the ground while screaming in a high pitch sound. As quickly as it happened the branches retract then stab forth again, hitting the beast once more as it tries in vain to get to it’s feet. The other three jump to their feet and turn …. And immediately bolt in different directions. Two of them are heading away from my area, I can’t hope to catch them. But the third one makes the mistake of running straight at my twiglings. I pull the branches back and stab into the downed deer one more time, finishing it off.

Now I turn my attention to the one who charged off into my twiglings. As the deer approaches I order the twiglings to fan out to catch it. I don’t think they can kill it alone, so I’m going to have them try to slow it down under a tree so I can stab it. After a few more moments of running the deer bursts out of the bushes in front of the twiglings and they pounce. The deer doesn’t stop its charge, instead lowering its head and putting its pointed antlers in front as it speeds along. It and the twiglings collide, one of the twiglings is screwed by its antlers and dies instantly. The other two manage to latch one, one to its neck and the other its front left leg. The deer abandons its attempts at escape and instead opts to thrash about wildly in an attempt to toss the remaining twiglings off. All it manages to do is shake the corpse of the dead one off its antlers, as the other two hold firm and continue to inhibit the beast's movements. Slowly the branches above move closer, then strike. The deer screams in agony and bucks around even more only to be met with more stabs from above. It tries to pull away but between the branches and the twiglings all it can manage to do is collapse in the direction it wants to go. Finally after a few more hits to vital areas it dies with a final wheeze.

Well, that was brutal, and rewarding. I’m surprised the deer are worth that much, seems a bit high. Then again, that thing did one shot my twigling when it gouged him. I look over to the base station of the dead twigling, I lost its presence on my network the moment the twigling died. The station has withered away, and looks sorta like it’s melting. Probably reclamation of materials or some shit. I don’t think I have to worry about the plant equivalent of sepsis on my network.

This turned out pretty well, I may have lost a twigling, but how many more will I be able to make with the deer corpses. Probably a few, definitely more than the singular little guy I lost. I order the remaining two to drag the corpses closer to my pod. It takes a few days for corpse flowers to grow in, and in this weather leaving these guys out is just asking for them to get snatched away by some hungry carnivore. Speaking of hungry carnivore, something new just entered my range.

Black Mountain Wolf (Level: 35)

Ahh good, and here I was afraid I was going to be bored immediately. Time for some extra meat.
