Chapter 16: Round two: Fight

Grey Timber Wolf (Level:15)

Aw shit, here we go again. But unlike last time this one isn’t bloodied. What are my stats looking like?

Health:188/205

Mana: 404/1558

Stamina: 403/430

Not great, while it definitely could be worse, I would prefer more mana. Got enough for a decent stab at it, literally. I start to shift the branches of the trees over top of it. While it has stepped past the trees and into the glade it’s still close enough to two of the trees for a good stabbing. The wolf stands there sizing up me and Alex. Alex to his credit has not completely lost his shit and is instead holding a fireball in his right hand. With a creak the branches finish orienting themselves and then slam forward. The wolf was to busy judging Alex and his fireball to notice until the sharpened branches jammed themselves into it’s flank.

“’YELP!’”

With a yelp it jumps forward, breaking off some of the branches while the rest slide out of the wounds they made, leaving bleeding holes where they struck. I expected the wolf to charge but instead it spins around growling, looking for whatever struck it. Alex decides this is the moment to unleash his attack and quickly throws his fireball at the now stationary and distracted target. It sails through the air with only a light hiss to be heard. The wolf doesn’t notice until its too late, with a loud pop the fireball explodes on its butt. Now it has a tenderized and cooked ass. The wolf spins around again, this time looking much more pissed off. I have another idea, do I have enough mana to pull it off?

Mana: 97/1558

Just enough for one more go, pinball time. I have the longest remaining branch re-extend itself, it’s still sharp from the stabbing it gave before. Once it’s at the proper length I have it stab the wolf again. The damage is minimal because it’s only one branch but it has the desired effect. The wolf is pissed off by being hit from behind for a 3rd time and proceeds to spin around violently and start chomping at the air, hoping to bite down on its phantom assailant. Alex decides to throw another fireball into the side of the wolf while it’s biting at the air.

“’YELP!’”

Sounds like that one did a little more damage. The wolf snaps its full attention to Alex, who decides to pull out another fireball and line up his attack. I drop down into the grass and move forward. It’s no doubt going to charge Alex and when it does, I at least want to give it a good whack on its way by. The wolf snarls, then charges Alex while angrily barking.

I’m about halfway between it and Alex. While it’s fast, I still have enough time to react, springing up out of the grass and delivering a heavy uppercut to its jaw. Unfortunately for me the wolf carries its forward momentum and crashes into me, sending us both tumbling. The wolf recovers first, and bites into my left thigh. The shock from the pain causes me to reflexively swing my right fist. It connects with the wolf’s face with a satisfying crunch, smashing it’s left eye and knocking it off my leg. The wolf stands back up, fury in its one remaining eye. Before it can lunge at me again a fireball comes in from the side, smacking it in the face and burning out its remaining eye.

The wolf yelps and jumps back, then it starts violently thrashing about and biting at the air. It’s blinded now, we’ve won this fight. The wolf continues to thrash about violently, slowly bleeding out. I hobble my way back over to my pod and hoist myself up. Alex is eyeing me up, probably measuring his chances. Don’t think about it dickhead, I still got enough hp to strangle you out. We silently watch the wolf; I simultaneously keep an eye on the outer edges of the glade. Don’t want any more surprises until this fur ball is dead. After about five minutes the wolf starts to slow down, losing energy. It’s done for, easy pickings. I hop down off my pod and hobble over to the wolf. It hears me coming and turns to face me, only to get a haymaker to the snout, sending it sprawling to the floor. That was a satisfying hit, I bend over the wolf and with one final heavy punch cave in its skull.

Well, that could have gone worse. At least Alex didn’t decide to barbecue my ass during that fight. Still definitely better than my first encounter with one of those ugly mutts. Alex is still sitting on the outer petal of my pod, huffing and puffing. Why is he breathing heavily, he didn’t even do anything? Well ok, nothing physically exhausting. I hobble back over to my pod, then pick up the stick I was using earlier. I walk over to Alex, then tap him on the head with the stick to get his attention.

“Stop that, $%#$ do $%^ want?” he asks

I simply tap the stick on the far circle. He just looks at me displeased

“I’m still %$^ taking you to $%# town.”

Fine then, be that way jackass.
