[ARC 1] Chapter 1 - First Day Part 1

"The Bureau is aimed at sending people to new worlds, where they can best help."

It was his very first day at his brand-new job. He gripped his knees. Dalton felt the excitement climb up his arms.

More importantly it was a first step towards his independence from his family.

Dalton leaned in his chair, listening intently at the woman leading his orientation. He needed to learn everything he could to be successful at his job.

"You might be asking, how we chose these people. In all cases, these are people that have died. We, the Bureau, have harnessed the power of pulling souls from the cycle of reincarnation, and controlling it in a way so we can send these souls into a new world. Sometimes, worlds need help."

With the terminal around her wrist, images popped up behind her.

A world in ruin.

A laughing evil Demon King.

A hero that heedlessly runs towards him screaming as the two clash.

"While we cannot intervene directly in the world's machinations, we can send a proxy, which is where we come in. We send a new soul into the world. We empower them, and they lead the world into a new era.

"It doesn't just need to be saving the world from certain doom." The woman smiled. "It can be granting technological advances. It can be ruling a country. It can even be as small as opening a bread shop. In turn, the world becomes better. So, let us start your jobs then. If you open your packet to page-"

She was interrupted when a woman in a green dress opened the door abruptly. The woman whispered something towards the woman leading the orientation.

"Is there a Dalton here?" The woman asked.

A few minutes later, Dalton followed behind her. He was told to take his things and leave with her. There was no other information given, and she was silent as she led him to wherever they were going.

"Is everything alright?" Dalton tugged at his tie's knot. "Did something happen?"

"Everything is fine. Just be quiet and follow me."

Everything didn't feel fine. Her tone was polite, but her smile was cold. He felt like a pig being led to the butcher.

While they waited for the elevator to come down, she finally spoke again.

"Do you know who I am?"

He met her eyes. There was an unknown emotion there he couldn't quite place. But she was waiting for an answer, and Dalton felt pain deep in his chest because he knew that it would hurt her.

"No, but my name is Dalton. And you would be?" He held out his hand.

She ignored it and turned away. "Of course."

At the same moment the elevator opened its doors. She pressed the B7 button, which was twenty floors down. He again tried to ask, but only managed to open his mouth. Her glare subdued him to silence.

It was a long elevator ride down.

When the elevator arrived on B7, she motioned for him to step out.

If the orientation room had felt like a typical luxury meeting room, then the area he stepped in felt like an old and rotten. Each step he took creaked and groaned. There was an old warning sigh caked in dust about holes.

"Come on now. We don't have all day." She stepped over the holes.

"Where are you taking me?" Dalton stepped over the holes. "I have a right to know."

Then, she suddenly stopped. Giving him the same cold smile.

"We're here." She knocked on the door.

"What is here?" Dalton eyed the door.

She grabbed him by the sleeve and pulled him through the door. When he turned around, her face had twisted in disgust and hatred.

"This is where you'll be working. Your father sends his regards."

Then, the door shut.
