Volume 3 Chapter One: The Dirty Little Paw

Sun Su Seung’s father was playing innocent.

“Why, what else would I have put there?”

“Something like math! Or history!”

“But you already know those.”

“Exactly!”

“There’s no point in learning something you already know better than most graduating college students. So I chose something you didn’t know.”

“But you’re supposed to have some basis in whatever you major in!”

“Yes. You play that royal road game.”

“Well, yes, but this is real life.”

“Indeed, and Royal Road was originally developed to train soldiers in life or death situations. It is the perfect training ground, and was made for that purpose.”

Seung didn’t want to admit it, but his father had a point.

The real issue he had was that if he was going to college, he wanted to be pursuing his academic studies, not taking off his shirt and punching people.

Of course, he knew there was no way he could make that argument persuasive enough for his father.

For the first time in his life he wished he wasn’t so educated.

The first day in college was very weird for Seung.

He had looked over the map beforehand, so that he wouldn’t get lost.

He got a few odd looks as he made his way to the room where the first class would be held.

Eventually, someone stopped him.

“Um, I think you might be lost kid. This is the class for martial arts majors”

“This is where the first martial arts class will be held?”

“Yes.”

The man seemed relieved.

“Then I am not lost.”

“Are you looking for someone.”

Seung was beginning to get annoyed.

’Why was this guy asking him these stupid questions.’

“Not at all. I found someone, and wish that I hadn’t.”

The man smiled at that.

“Good, but you said something like ‘I’m looking at someone, and if I’m still looking at them in three seconds, they’ll wish I wasn’t.’”

“What?”

“Because you’ll beat them up. You are here for the martial arts class aren’t you?”

“Yes!”

“Then you should come with me.”

The man walked into the room that Seung had been heading to originally.

“So the strongest person in the school is probably professor Ji’s daughter.”

It took Sueng a moment to realise that the man had started talking to him again.

“Here’s my advice, don’t mention that she’s a woman, don’t talk to her, don’t look at her, act subservient, all of that.”

Sueng wasn’t sure what to say to that, but fortunately he wasn’t given the chance to say anything.

“And on a more general note, think of some cool lines to say when you’re laying down the beat downs. Oh, and find something to freak out about. People will respect you more if you do. Like how Ji gets pissed off if you talk about how she’s a she, or how Hyeol gets mad if you talk about his paintings. I recommend your height. Let’s be honest, you look pretty young. How old are you anyway?”

If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.

“Twenty.”

The man did not believe him.

Seung thought that that was okay, because he was lying.

“Usually on the first day, he chooses some volunteers from the freshmen, and has one or two of the upperclassmen demonstrate what they have learned.”

Seung was not stupid.

Nor was he clueless.

Well, he was a little clueless, just enough to be happy when he wasn’t, like now.

“You’re going to give the demonstration.”

“Yes! Not bad. I use a style of fighting where, well, you’ll see.”

Seung found a seat near the back and sat down.

No offense to whoever that guy was but he really didn’t care about this.

The professor of martial arts introduced the guy, whose name was Jei Nam, and let him take the stage, along with the other two, Ji and Hyeol.

They all performed some martial arts, although Seung was too far away to get any details and wasn’t paying any attention.

After the demonstration, it was announced that those three, the professor and more upperclassmen would be wandering around to see what the freshmen could do. Unlike most departments, where rank was determined by seniority, for some reason, upperclassmen in the martial arts major were fine with being respectful to strong lowerclassmen.

“So,” Jei Nam was saying, “I found this funny guy. He’s really short, and looks like he’s a few years too young for college. I’ll introduce him to you.”

“Sure,” Hyeol said sarcastically, “that’s going to happen.”

“What do you mean?”

“You don’t know his name.”

“Sure I do, it’s… um… how did you know?”

“You never asked me for my name either.”

“I know your name!”

“Yeah, but it took you three months, and you just overheard it.”

“Yeah, I guess you’re right.”

“And we were pretty involved too.”

Ji tried her hardest not to think about what she was thinking about.

Jei led them to where he left Seung.

Seung was reading a book, and ignoring all of the people showing off their punches and techniques.

“Hey, man!” Jei greeted him.

“Hello.”

“These are my two friends I was telling you about.”

“Hello.”

He didn’t even look up.

“See? Funny.”

Ji Yeong didn’t move. She seemed shocked.

Hyeol stepped forward and spoke.

“Are you sure you can fight without your ‘rangs?”

Seung looked up, his mouth making an “o”.

“Aesh. Paella.”
