Sorry, not able to resume schedule yet. Assume I am taking a break between volumes, and that this is a teaser.

“So, you’re the kid Elilla sent?”

“Who?”

He glared at the girl in front of him. But he had to be patient, this would pay off some of his debts from the incident in Alitrian.

“The blacksmith, lass.”

“Ah, yes. Yes I am. My name’s Paella.”

“I don’t care. You’re just here because I’m the only healer Elilla knows.”

“Sorry for the trouble. My specialty is-”

“I don’t care what you’ve done in the past. Your specialty is your affinity.”

He had learned this trick along with everybody in that adventure.

“And your affinity is… fire. Very strong affinity too.”

Paella looked crestfallen.

“I know what you’re thinking kid. People with opposing affinities often gain incredible versatility, but those with the affinity matching their role hold the top position when it comes to power.”

“But I don’t want versatility!”

He blinked in surprise.

“What?”

“I wanted to have power, not versatility!”

“What, exactly, are you saying?”

He was beginning to have a feeling he knew exactly what she was saying.

“I wanted water!”

He glared at her, silencing her.

“Ignorant buffoon. Water has nothing to do with healing. The element of healing is fire.”

He stared at the boy in front of him. Rell, his name was.

“Water.”

She didn’t even look at the monk.

“Earth.”

He examined the woman’s sword carefully. After a while he nodded.

“Air.”

Flicker turned to Iron.

“You’re sure that all of them will be willing to teach?”

“We tempered those kids ourselves. Their affinities are sure to stir whatever teacher lies within each one.”

“You’re probably right.”

“Of course,” she continued, “They didn’t seem too bright.”

“Oh dear.”

“Don’t worry, Freedmen don’t die permanently”
