31. Little Trip

31. Little Trip

Since Trevor wasn't really expecting anybody, it took him by surprise, but then he thought that it was maybe somebody from the school, wanting to finish some formalities. He went to open the door and as he did, he saw the familiar face of Professor Martin Winchester.

The man was smiling already. He looked a bit less tired compared to when Trevor saw him the last time.

- Good morning Mister West - he said.

- G-good morning professor. W-what brings you here?

- I got notified of your arrival, so I came to see how you are doing - he said, looking over the boy's shoulder. - And I see that you already unpacked. Good. As I have some time today I would like to offer you a bit of a tour, and also a little shopping trip. You still need a few things for your magical courses.

- Y-yes, sure...

- Good. The unpacking might wait since you will be bringing some new things anyway.

The boy nodded, while the man took a few steps back. Trevor then quickly want to grab a few of his things, the key to his room among them, and then also moved to the corridor, locking the door behind him.

- I didn't expect you to be this nice, mister Winchester - he said after everything was done.

- Well... I've been once in your shoes. New place, new people. The new world basically, as the things here work a bit different than they do in the fourth - said the man, and started walking towards the staircase.

- Were you also originally from the fourth, and moved here? - asked Trevor, a bit confused.

The teacher chuckled shortly.

- No. I've been born and raised here, in the third, but I was good enough to be allowed to later study in the second.

- That's... That's amazing. How was it, the second district I mean?

- Yeah... It was amazing as long as it lasted. The second was... magical. Yeah, that's the best way to describe it - said the professor and his usual smile got even wider.

The two of them managed to reach the staircase and started making their way down.

- Wha-what do you mean by as long as it lasted? - Trevor asked, pushed by curiosity.

The professor chuckled again.

- I went there to high school because I experienced a major development of my magical powers, which combined with my hard work in the field of education earned me a title of a 'genius' here, but over there I was just another guy. Sadly my development didn't progress much further, and after finishing high school I couldn't pursue higher education there. Instead, I returned here to finish my pursuit of knowledge as a young man.

Trevor nodded.

- I thought you were somebody incredible when I first met you, professor.

This made the man laugh.

- Well, I have to admit that I also feel a bit of kinship with you, Mister West, as your situation is partially similar to mine. Hopefully, your story will be a bit longer than mine - he added.

- I have my breathing technique, and I'm confident that it will allow me to reach beyond the third district. Maybe not right now, but with a bit of time - Trevor said with confidence, and a bit of excitation could be heard in his voice.

- I don't want to be a bearer of bad news and cut your wings, but breathing techniques have a minimal impact. You see, the real game-changers are the runic chambers. Sadly the secrets of making them are kept in the first district, and they don't share them at all. I know, because I've tried many times, hoping that would help me develop my powers further. That is, before I gave up, and returned here, to the third.

- Runic chambers?

- Yes. It's a room with Haddish runes on the walls. Symbols that can trap magic, and create spells in written form. You probably are hearing about this for the first time, aren't you?

Trevor confirmed by nodding.

- It's quite funny since you have probably already seen them in action - he added and chuckled briefly again. - They are used in creating magical wands, and other useful artifacts. You have them in your room too.

- In my room? Do you mean that empty one with strange symbols on the walls?

- Yes. It's called a safe room, and the symbols used there are of protective nature. It's for your individual training and practice. You can use your magic there safely.

- That's... That's awesome! - Trevor almost shouted.

- Ha, ha. Yes. It's indeed as you named it.

- Not only did I get a whole room just for myself, but also this? This place really is amazing.

- Oh, yes. The single rooms are precisely because of the safe rooms. So you can practice by yourself and not risk endangering anybody around you. In the past, we had a different system, but the saferooms were so occupied, that some students couldn't use them at all. It led to some accidents as the students were going outside to practice, so we decided to change things a bit. Now everything works properly.

- What about students that are not living in the dormitories? Do they also have access to the saferooms?

- All students live in the dormitories, even those who happen to have a home very close to the school. Maybe we are not as good as the schools from the second and the first, but we still follow the same principles, and competition is one of the most important ones. We believe that students leaving close to each other, and interacting among themselves throughout the whole day inspire one another to push themselves further - Martin explained.

They reached the ground floor. The receptionist didn't pay attention to them at all, still reading her newspaper. They quickly left the building. A bit furder, partially on the sidewalk next to the inner road, was parked a familiar car, that the boy have already seen before when Martin visited him at home.

He expected the chauffeur to come out, but it didn't happen. Instead, the teacher snapped his fingers, and both back doors shut open. This surprised the boy and made him smile.

- The magic that was rare back in the fourth is quite the common thing here - Martin explained. - Come on, get inside.

Trevor nodded once again, and increased his tempo a bit, closing the distance between him and the car. This created an opportunity to notice that the creature sitting behind the wheel wasn't a regular driver. Instead, it was a human-size puppet. Still, dressed properly.

It made him hesitate a bit before going in and sitting in the rear seat. The professor noticed that.

- Don't be afraid - he said, getting inside himself, just next to Trevor, on the rear seat. - I made him myself, and he works properly. Well... I don't want to brag, but frankly speaking, he is better than a regular chauffeur.

- You made him yourself? - the boy was quite surprised and quickly leaned over to put his head between the front seats to have a better look at the creation.

- Yes. That's something I've learned in the second district. Here people aren't advanced enough for such creations, maybe except for a few academics, but out there it's quite a common view, especially among those focused on enchanting. Anyway... Let's drive. To the Morfeus Bazaar!

He finished his little explanation with a shout, that woke up the dol. Puppet immediately started the engine, and they, to Trevor's amazement, drove off.
