22. A Bitter Sweet Victory

22. A Bitter Sweet Victory

The periodical, mechanical beeps woke up Trevor. He felt funny with his face being completely numb.

At first, he had difficulties opening his eyes, as the sharp light coming down on him from the lamps placed on the ceiling was just too powerful for him. He took it slow though, and over time managed to peal his eyelids open to see and witness that he was in fact in the hospital bed.

They put this weird thing on his index finger, connected to the machinery checking up on his vital signs. He also had different clothes on.

He looked to his side and noticed his father, almost laying down on the chair, completely passed out.

- Dad? - he asked.

The man woke up immediately like somebody poured some cold water on him. It took him a second or two to come back to his senses and focus his sight on Trevor.

- You are awake - he said, and a smile appeared on his face. - How are you feeling, son?

- I'm fine... How did I get here?

- Liv... She called the ambulance because somebody have beaten you up.

- I... I lost, Dad.

The father slowly nodded.

- I thought so, but don't you worry. Your old man is going to get revenge for you - he said and placed his hand on Trevor's shoulder.

- No Dad... Liv was right. I Shouldn't have gone there. It was stupid... I thought... I thought that it would be different because I learned how to use magic, but there were two of them, and they... They just got the better of me.

The air left his father's lungs, but he didn't say a thing for quite a while.

- I know that it has been difficult for you with no magic. I know that they really bullied you, but you were always saying that you are handling it, and I trusted you. I should have known better. You were just enduring this alone for such a long time. No wonder you've taken the wrong path. It's my fault, but rest assured, your dad is going to get them. We know who did this, we just need proof.

- Even if you find proof, they will get a fancy attorney from the third, and the whole thing is going to end their way anyway. You know that. After all, you've been the one who was always annoyed so badly when such things happen, and you wouldn't stop talking about it even at home - Trevor pointed out.

The dad was left speechless. He opened his mouth, but no words came out.

- It's fine - the boy continued. - I won, Dad. I won a long time ago, when my powers woke up, I just couldn't see it. They lost because my powers are growing, and I'm gonna get to the third, while they will have to move to the fourth for good.

Trevor tried to smile, after what he said, but it caused him a burst of sharp pain in his face, so he stopped.

The father slowly nodded.

- I understand. The fight is pointless... Your mother, though... She is on a warpath, so we might have problems explaining that to her.

Stolen from its rightful author, this tale is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

- I'll do it. It's better if it dies down on its own.

The father nodded again and patted his son on the shoulder.

- I'm gonna look for the doctor - he said and got up.

Trevor noticed that despite his words, he didn't fully agree with what the boy said. He just tried to hide it, but the reality was brutal. The people, especially the wealthy ones, who lived in the third district, were untouchable to the ones from the fourth.

Something really big would have to happen for them to not slip out of justice's grasp. For the people from the fifth, it was even worse. This made Trevor suspect that the hierarchy of the districts was this bad in the whole city.

His father returned a bit later with the doctor, who did a checkup on the boy, and informed him, that he would like for Trevor to stay overnight, just to check if everything will be ok and if he was good to go on the very next day.

He spent it mostly with his father, talking about how it's going to be after he gets the scholarship in the third, mostly because Trevor wanted to make him think like it was a sure thing and stay positive, so he wouldn't go back to what happened to his son and try to seek justice on his own accord.

Later the mother came to visit. She pretended to be very happy, but he knew that underneath that mask she was furious, probably because of something that happened before she arrived at the hospital.

- How are you feeling honey? - she asked, as she came closer, leaned over his bed, and placed a kiss on his forehead. - Is everything ok? I got an update from your father on the phone, and he said everything was fine.

She briefly glanced at the man, who just nodded.

- I'm fine, mom - said, Trevor.

- That's good, that's good - she said, still keeping the mask on.

This view pushed Trevor to do something, he would normally hesitate to do, but now he was sure it was necessary.

- Mom... I want you to do something for me, ok? - he asked.

- Yes, anything - she responded without even thinking.

- Live it be.

For a moment she was bamboozled, but then a shadow of anger went through her face, as she understood what her son meant by those words.

- I know that you want to seek justice. And you would normally never back down, but I'm asking you to do this. It was my fault. I won. They will have to stay here, while I'm gonna move to the third. I'm sure of that. Just because I never imagined such a thing as a victory over them, I just couldn't accept it, and I sought something more, but that was a mistake.

- But...

- Please, Mom. Just let it go. Soon I'll go to a high school and we will forget about this. I know that you always taught me to never give up and to stand my ground, but this is different.

She sighed and sat on the edge of his hospital bed. A full range of emotions showed on her face briefly, one by one, as she processed everything. It took her quite a while, but eventually, she nodded. He used this opportunity and immediately began talking about the scholarship.

All three of them knew that they couldn't win in the court, but they also didn't want to just roll over and give up. It was their family approach, to fight to the very end, but the boy changed his mind a bit, mostly because of Liv.

Deep down there, in his mind, he still wanted to get proper revenge, but he just realized that the face-on confrontation wasn't the best approach. He simply wasn't ready for it.

Eventually, both parent's left, and he spent the night in the hospital bed, to leave the very next morning, after another medical checkup. He was supposed to stay home for a week, and he knew very well how he was going to spend that time.

His training resumed and continued through the few next days. During that time he made a few attempts to call Liv, but in the end, he couldn't push himself to do it. He was embarrassed at how things have gone and also felt like just saying 'sorry' over the phone wasn't good enough.

He ended up the whole long week with a nice change to the numbers in his status. The 'Energy' got increased to 46, while 'Contro' to 32. Mainly because he didn't focus on it that much.

No new quests appeared, but he didn't even pay too much attention to that. The return to school was a much worse problem for him, to the point that he couldn't fall asleep on the night before his comeback.

He kept rolling in the bed, constantly thinking about how would it be. Probably the whole school knew already what happened. He knew how merciless the kids can be, and started expecting many laughs as he went through all the scenarios he could possibly think of in his head. It went on and on until the first morning rays of the sun started reaching his room through the window, protected by covers.
