27. Making Them Proud

27. Making Them Proud

The news he brought home caused a major celebration. The family decided to make a barbecue in the garden and invite a few guests. It was a nice day of break for Trevor.

He invited Liv since she was his only friend, and they sat on the grass in front of the house with plastic plates and burgers made by Mister West, the senior.

- You really look like shit - she said to him, looking ahead, at the neighborhood.

- How many times are you gonna tell me that?

- I just want it to sink in - she said and briefly looked at him with a nasty smirk on her face. - I might not have many chances to make fun of you in the future.

Trevor rolled his eyes.

- I won't be that far, and we still can call each other.

- First, you need to get that scholarship, then dream about leaving the fourth.

- I have it in the bag - he said with confidence.

Then he put his plate on the grass next to him, lay down, and stretched his body.

- There are bugs on the ground - she pointed out. - They really are gonna enjoy your burger.

- I don't mind. To be honest I'm just more tired than hungry. The last week was so hard...

- Well... You are not done yet, are you? You still need to get up to a hundred if you want to get that scholarship.

- I lack only twenty-four points. I can get them in time, without any rush.

She chuckled.

- You are so confident about that. What if it's not about that breathing technique of yours, but because of your powers awakening, and they will suddenly stop? You won't reach a hundred then, and you will be stuck here with me - a mysterious smile appeared on her face.

- As much as I like your company, Liv, I'm not staying. I want to go further. I want to see the whole city, not just the third district.

The smile on her face changed a bit. Sadness transformed it. If the boy would be paying attention, he would notice, but he wasn't. He was laying with his eyes closed, enjoying the warm weather.

- You realize how hard that would be? And I'm not even talking about the first. Even the second. You would have to get like a thousand in your evaluation.

- Thousand, huh? That's not that much. I think with a bit of time, I might get there. Maybe not in my first year, but it's definitely possible. How do you even know that?

- I just threw you a number. How would I know how many you need to move there?

Trevor shrugged his shoulders.

- I'll find out when I'm in the third - he said with confidence like the task of coming from fourth to the third was not such a big deal.

It made an effect on Liv, and she for a long while observed him, just laying there with his eyes closed.

- You really believe that? - she said eventually.

- Yeah - he confirmed without hesitation.

- The stuff you said about that witch. It was bullshit, wasn't it? - she suddenly asked.

He didn't answer immediately, as he needed to collect his thoughts first.

- Yes. I can't tell you what happened, though. If I could, you would already know everything.

She just sighed and placed her plate on the side, to join Trevor in laying down on the grass.

- You are an asshole - she said eventually. - But still a good friend.

- Thanks - he responded.

They spent there quite a while, before returning home. Their food got infested by ants, so they threw it away.

The party lasted until late evening, but Trevor didn't. As soon as Liv decided to go back home, he went to bed to get some quality sleep. Something he was craving for a long time.

On the next day, he resumed his training, taking it a bit easier on himself, so he wouldn't exhaust himself as badly as he did while trying to reach 70 in the evaluation. This lasted for three weeks because that's when he managed to hit the hundred, allowing him to apply for the scholarship program.

His 'Control' also increased up to forty-six.

He went to school, so the number would be submitted to the system. As soon as he got outside, he took out his phone and called first his mother, then his father. They both decided to take a day off from work and return home to celebrate and also to call Professor Winchester together.

Trevor's plan was a bit diffrent. He had plenty of time since he had to return home on foot because there was no bus at that time, so he decided to call the man by himself.

- Hello? - answered the familiar voice.

- This is Trevor West. I'm calling because I just finished my evaluation, and I reached a hundred.

- What a pleasant surprise. Do you perhaps have some time, later today? I would love to discuss the formalities of our scholarship program with you and your parents.

- Yes. I already spoke with my parents, and they decided to take a day off and return home.

- That's even better. How about we meet in an hour then? I already have your address from mister Belcher.

- That would be great - said Trevor.

He couldn't stop the smile crawling on his face.

- See you soon then, mister West - said the teacher, and hung up.

After that, the boy just focused on walking, but as he passed by Miss Vera's bookstore, he stopped. For a moment he wanted to get inside and speak with her. Maybe even go to 'The Grand Library', but then he realized that there was no time for that, and just resumed his march.

Eventually, he reached his house. Both his father's and his mother's cars were already parked by the sidewalk.

Thrilled, Trevor went inside, straight to the living room, where he spotted his partners through the window, to share the great news with them. Hearing that he returned, they both stood up and were about to go ahead to shower him with questions, but he happened to be faster than them and caught them midway.

- I passed, and I also already called Mister Winchester. He should be here in an hour said the boy with a big smile on his face.

His mother squeaked like a little girl and rushed to jump on his neck. Father took it in in a bit calmer manner. He slowly approached them with a massive smile on his face, to hug them both.

- That's great news, son. That's amazing news. I'm so proud. I've never been so proud - he said.

- We need to prepare - the mother suddenly realized. - I need a shower.

Without waiting for anything, she escaped their grasp and rushed to the bedroom. The father stayed, and using the opportunity placed both hands on Trevor's shoulder.

- I can't even describe how proud I am - he continued. - I've never been so proud in my entire life, but your mother is right, we should prepare.

With those words he also left, crossing paths with the mother, who rushed from the bedroom to the bathroom. Trevor watched them with a big smile on his face, and eventually also vanished inside his room.
