For Trevor the summer break was weird. Filled with training, but also a lot about spending time with Liv. Since they both always hung out together, since the beginning of middle school, and they also knew that it won't be any longer possible due to Trevor leaving for the third district, they kinda wanted to get some time in advance.
Half a month in, the boy still didn't get any new missions, which started to worry him. This led to a decision to visit 'The Grand Library' again.
He approached the building, but stopped on the sidewalk, in front of the stairs, and for a moment watched the simple door, mustering the courage to go inside. For some reason, that he couldn't really explain, he was scared. Maybe it had something to do with the strange werewolf-like creature that attacked him, or perhaps it was the mysterious librarian, and the owner of the store, Miss Vera Kovalyova.
He mustered up some confidence, and went in, climbing the stairs with a few long leaps. The bell hanging above rang furiously as he pushed the door open. The owner was behind the desk, writing something on a piece of paper, and she didn't raise her head to see who just got in.
- Good morning Mister West - she just said, not interrupting her work. - I bet you didn't come to buy anything. Just please put everything in order when you come back.
- G-god morning - he just squeezed out, taken aback by her behavior.
Then he moved straight to the mysterious door placed between the bookshelves and entered the dark room. He used a flare to create some light and pushed the bed to the side, to then pick up the rug and reveal the trapdoor in the floor. With a bit of effort, he opened it using only one hand, and still keeping up the flames went down.
After entering 'The Grand Library', the light hit him, forcing him to squint his eyes a bit, but he overcame it quite quickly, and could again witness the splendor of this strange and mysterious place. He killed the spell and started walking towards the massive desk, where Miss Vera Kovalyova, much younger in appearance, was also writing something on a piece of paper.
- Good morning again - she said.
Despite the distance between them, he heard her loud and clear, like she was just in hand's reach, in front of him.
- How can I help you, Mister West? - she added.
- Good morning... again. I want to...
- Borrow another book? - she interrupted him. - Show me your library card.
Trevor took the piece of metal out of his pocket and quickly moved to place it on the desk. The woman caught it with surprising speed, scaring the boy, and she glanced briefly at the item, to then put it back on the desktop.
This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings.
- Just as I thought - she said, but there were no further explanations.
- What? - asked the confused boy after a moment, since he expected to be told more.
- Well... You are a new member, and that means you can only borrow one book at a time, and you still didn't finish the one you got. That means no more books for you.
- But... - left his mouth.
Trevor was simply too confused and couldn't understand what was going on. The book he was supposed to have was still in the library.
"Is it because of the system? How on earth I'm supposed to finish that?", he thought.
- Mister West? - she asked, finally stopping her hand and pealing her eyes off the piece of paper she was writing on.
- Yeah... Then can I just read here? - he pointed to the desks on the elevation on his left.
- To get that privilege you need to be a member for a year. Didn't you read the rules? - a nasty grin crawled on her face.
- But you... Uh... Ok... I'll go...
She smiled even wider, which made Trevor turn around and leave, embarrassed.
After that strange episode in his life moved to the past, he returned to his normal routine, eventually reaching a hundred and forty in his 'Energy' statistic, and seventy-eight in 'Control'. Mainly thanks to switching between 'Energy Overcharge' and 'Flow of power'.
The time was not slowing down, and day by day chipped more and more on the summer break, eventually leading to his last day with Liv, before his departure to the third. They went to watch a movie about a spy uncovering a conspiracy to deliver magical wands to the fifth district to cause an uprising, that would turn the whole city on fire.
Obviously, the hero was from the fourth and could manifest his magic a bit, but mostly depended on conventional weapons, like fists and guns, and also his special magical artifact. A runic shield, which was actually a bracelet that could create a protective forcefield.
They left the cinema quite happy, and Trevor even offered to walk Liv back to her flat, which wasn't that far away. Mainly because it was quite late.
The street lamps were on, illuminating the sidewalks everywhere around. Piercing the darkness of the night. Some light was also coming from the windows of people's homes that were shining yellow. Even with all of that, he still didn't want to let her walk alone.
They exchanged their opinions about the picture on their way, but it didn't last too long, as they reached their destination after fifteen minutes at quite a slow pace.
- So this is it, huh? - she asked standing on the first step leading to the building where she was living with her parents. - A goodbye?
- For now - Trevor agreed. - I'll be back during the winter break. We can hang out then, and who knows, if you practice my breathing technique, you might join me soon.
- Yeah... That's not happening - she almost laughed.
- You never know.
- I do - she said with a note of sadness in her voice. - I'll be missing you, Mister West. It was fun to hang around.
- Yeah - he said, and a smile appeared on his face. - A few cool years together.
- Yeah - she agreed. - Through the whole middle school. We, the two misfits, fighting with all the muscleheads and dolls.
Her words made him chuckle.
- The movie really got you, didn't it?
- I liked it - she confirmed.
Then a moment of awkward silence happened, as they both didn't really know what to say.
- Ok, enough of this. It's late and I need to come back - she eventually broke it, since it became too much for her to handle.
Trevor slowly nodded.
- I'm gonna call you often - he promised.
She smiled, but despite her words didn't start climbing the steps. Instead, she jumped forward, closer to him, and kissed him on the lips, just to turn around, all red on the face, and rushed inside the building.
Trever stood there frozen for a long while. Then slowly moving his hand he touched his own lips.
