26. Professor Martin Winchester

26. Professor Martin Winchester

With the principal's blessing, Trevor went on a bit of a shopping spree. He bought a whole bag of energy drinks and returned home. With his mother's healthy food, he wasn't too concerned with the negative effect of drinking too much of those, and he really wanted to stay awake as long as possible, despite the boring training, so he needed a bit of additional caffeine.

Equipped like that he started his training regime, which basically was full-on meditation, using 'Energy Overcharge' to increase his own magical potential as far as possible, to reach the necessary number in the given time.

That's how he spent the next seven days of his life. Closed in his room, and meditated. Sleeping for six or fewer hours a day, and leaving only to take care of his physical needs. It went to the point that his parent started to worry about him, but Trevor reassured them that he is doing great despite his look.

By the end of the time, he was very tired and wasn't feeling that great overall, but was happy, since he managed to hit a mark of 70 and even exceed it.

His 'Energy' hit a new high of 76, while 'Control' increased only by 4, up to 40.

Sadly, there were no new quests, which annoyed Trevor a bit, since he wanted to be able to do more than just create some small fire. He couldn't even change that much about 'Flare' because of his lack of 'Control'. Except for the basic changes, he needed that strange 'Elemental Proficiency: Fire' and at least a 100 in 'Control'. So switching his focus looked more and more interesting. At least it would if he had the time to do that.

Finally, the day to return to school, and talk again with the principal came. He chatted with Liv briefly, since she was quite concerned after seeing him, then he did his daily evaluation and went straight to the principal's office.

Trevor knocked on the door, but before he could open it, he heard loud and clear:

- Please come in, Mister West.

It took him a bit by surprise, but he pushed the door open and went inside. To his second surprise of the day, there were two people inside. One was Mister Belcher, but the other one was unknown to the boy.

It was a man, wearing a long dark robe with mint-green patterns embroidered on the edges of his sleeves, and at the bottom of his attire. He had short hair with a bit of gray poking here and there.

He was turned with his back to Trevor and was looking through the window, standing a bit behind, on the side, of the principal.

- Please sit down mister West - said mister Belcher, as he smiled.

It was a fake one, but strangely warm.

Trevor followed the instruction, and took his backpack off, then placed it right next to his leg.

The story has been illicitly taken; should you find it on Amazon, report the infringement.

- This is Professor Martin Winchester. He teaches the theory of magic in Velrosh's Highschool of Arcane Arts. He also checks the potential candidates for the school scholarship program - said the principal, as he turned awkwardly in his chair, just to point with an open hand at the man behind him.

It didn't really work well, but Trevor's eyes got wide, as he already heard the school's name before. It was the best high school in the third district. Or at least that was what the rumors he heard were indicating.

The teacher slowly turned around to face Trevor. He had deeply sunken eyes, showing how tired he was. A bit of residual beard, probably because he didn't have enough time to shave. And a pair of glasses pushed down quite far on his hooked nose.

He smiled at the boy with genuine warmth, contrary to the previous one he got from the other man.

- It's nice to meet you, mister west - said Martin. - I have been notified of your incredible progress with the magical powers you now possess. I'm not gonna lie, you picked my curiosity, despite not reaching the required amount of a hundred in your daily evaluation. You see, there are not many people in the fourth that manage to qualify for our scholarship program, and they usually have strong powers from birth. You are different, you had zero powers, but during the past few weeks, they grew by a lot.

- I'm doing this breathing technique I've learned very diligently.

Winchester slowly nodded, then glanced briefly at the monitor of the principal's computer.

- Seventy-six. If this continues you will reach a hundred by the end of this semester.

- Y-yes - Trevor agreed. - That's my goal.

- Good. You are a curious case. I would love to have you among our students. Your grades - he glanced at the monitor again - are quite good too. Maybe I'm a bit too excited about you, but I've already allowed myself to talk with mister Belcher on your behalf, and we agreed that the progress you are showing should not be stopped by anything. We came to the conclusion, that you already showed enough to pass each of your courses, so instead of coming to school, you should stay home, and keep doing what you are doing.

The man smiled again.

- Yes - the principal seized the moment and butted in. - I've already talked with your teachers, and they agreed with everything. Just come by every week to get evaluated. We would love to continue monitoring your progress.

- Yes - said Martin, as he briefly looked at mister Belcher. - If you manage to pass the mark of a hundred points, I would be more than happy to offer you a spot in our scholarship program.

Trevor had a problem with grasping everything that was going on. It was just too much good news at once, to believe it like that. He needed somebody to pinch him, as he was too paralyzed to do it himself.

- T-that would be great - he squeezed out eventually.

- Amazing - said Martin, and extended his right hand toward the boy. - Let's stay in contact.

As he spoke, from the sleeve of his robe drifted flew a black card. Guided by his index finger, it drifted through the air to Trevor, who caught it and then looked at it. There were white letters printed on it, spelling 'Professor Martin Winchester' and a telephone number. The edges were decorated with flower patterns in a mint-green color.

- Y-yes - the boy squeezed again.

It was hard for Trevor to make his mind think in the way it would usually do, because of the state of shock he was in.

- That would be all, Mister West. You can go home now, and continue your progress - said the principal and smiled.

- Y-yes - the boy repeated, and then quickly left the room.

He had to return, as he realized that he left the backpack, which surprised the principal, and caused mister Winchester to smile.

He apologized, bowing slightly, and went outside. Still firmly holding onto the card. All the way outside through the empty corridor he kept looking at it. He simply couldn't believe what happened to him.
