24. Going On The Offensive

24. Going On The Offensive

Trevor, sitting in the school cafeteria, with his own lunch in a paper bag on the table, couldn't shake off the lingering surprise. Just a few tables from him was sitting a group of 'Crash' team members, and despite his presence, they didn't care at all.

He was so focused on them that he couldn't hear all the chatter in the whole space around him, nor the buzzing of lights. He didn't see any other kids by the tables. Those who didn't care about him, nor those who watched him carefully.

He didn't even notice Liv, until she sat in front of him, and spoke:

- Tell me everything - she said, leaning over the table a bit, as she dropped her backpack to the floor.

- What? - he suddenly turned to face her, but his brain was still focused on the 'Crash' team members.

- The principal! Why did he want to speak with you? - she asked, and then quickly glanced to the side, to check what he was so focussed on. - Oh, them... You don't need to worry about them, or anybody else. Before your return, every teacher said to every kid to not mess with you. I bet they just don't want any more trouble.

- Really? - Trevor was surprised by what she said.

It took him a moment to connect the dots, but he managed to do it. It was more about his progress than anything else.

- Yes, and now tell me what the principal wanted from you.

- Oh... He just noticed my increases through the daily evaluations... He offered help, so I asked him if I could ditch the lessons.

- Really? - she couldn't help but smile, as she found it unbelievably funny. - And what did he say? Don't tell me he agreed...

- He said he needs to check with other teachers about my grades. I bet he is not gonna do anything.

- I wouldn't be so sure - said Liv. - If you get to the 70 I bet they will be willing to go for it. Especially if your growth won't stop. If there would be a chance for you to get the scholarship, I bet they would crown you the king of this stupid school.

- You think?

- Of course - she said with a wide smile. - They would go crazy. There was never a scholarship student in this school, ever.

Stolen novel; please report.

- How do you even know that? - Trevor asked, quite surprised.

She shrugged her shoulders.

- When my magic powers were growing I just got excited and did a bit of research, that's all.

- You thought you would be the first to get it, didn't you? The scholarship, I mean - he asked and a nasty grin crawled on his face.

- Shut up - she growled at him. - I was just curious, that's all.

- Yeah... Yeah... - he said and took his lunch out of the bag.

It was a sandwich, which he bit, not losing eye contact with Liv. She rolled her eyes and took her own food out. A salad in a plastic box.

- Diet? - he asked with his mouth still full.

- Shut up - she repeated, taking out a fork, that disappeared inside her meal.

She had to pull some wipes out of her bag to wipe it off the oily dressing and started eating.

After that they ate mostly in silence, and spent the break on some chatter, just to return to their separate classes.

Trevor had still a few more boring lessons, to go through before the day of school ended, and his mother appeared in front of the building to pick him up. Since his talk with Liv, there was a thought in his brain that needed some time to grow and bloom, but since it did in a few next hours, he couldn't stop thinking about it.

- Mom... - he started, as they parked in front of their home.

- Yes? - she asked, and turned towards him, as she killed the engine.

- Can I have a few days off school?

His question took her by surprise, and she went silent at the very first moment in a while.

- Why? Did something happen in school?

Briefly, Trevor considered telling her about his meeting with the principal, but in the end, he decided to not mention it.

- No, it's just... I'm not learning anything there, and it's not that long until the semester ends. I basically have all my grades, and I'm just wasting my time there. If I had more time to put into my breathing exercises, I could grow my magic powers further. I really want that scholarship. Today I reached a forty-six in the daily evaluation. I can get to seventy in no time if I won't have to waste my time on this.

- I'll have to... You know what? - At first, her expression was quite starn, but it changed as a smile appeared on her lips all of a sudden. - I'm gonna call tomorrow morning, and tell them that you are sick.

- Thank you, mom - said Trevor, and left the car.

She followed him, and closed the car, before speaking out again:

- Honey...

The boy, already on his way to the door, stopped and turned around.

- You better get that scholarship, or I'm gonna be mad - she said with all seriousness as she pointed her index finger straight at him.

- I'm gonna get it - he reassured her and went to the door to open it with his own key.

After getting inside he quickly took his shoes off and went straight to his room. He didn't come out until the dinner was ready, meditating throughout all that time.

There were still a few days until the weekend, and Trevor spend them all on utilizing 'Energy Overcharge' to push his 'Energy' as far as he could. He ignored almost anything, except the calls from Liv, who was concerned about his disappearance.

Thanks to the few free days he turned the fourth six into sixty-one. His control also increased from thirty-two to thirty-six. With that, he was ready to come back to school, mainly just to renegotiate with the principal, as the few days made him decide to go more on the offense.
