Chapter 10: Conflict

Chapter 10: Conflict

418 waited until the last soldier had gone up to the battlefield before starting their plan. They knew that they would be able to help much once the troops left the dungeon, so they had to think of some way to help out their troops. While looking for some way to help out, they came across the conversion system. This system allowed a dungeon to convert a naturally formed cavern into a room of the dungeon. This of course required an initial investment of 800 MP and 200 BP to start the process. But that was not its greatest cost. The greatest cost was the amount of time it took because for every 25 sq. ft., it took 5 minutes. While that might not seem like much the rate of converse is almost double the speed of constructing the room. And of course the amount of time needed is all calculated at the same time. So to convert a territory this large is going to take awhile. However they quickly learned that since this was a former dungeon territory that this was going to take a little over a day instead of the nearly month long exercise it was going to before. So 418 started the process to convert this cavern. However they are then greeted by a pop-up menu screen. It gives them this message: “Converting occupied territories takes 1.5 times longer. Estimated time to completion: 1 Day, 16 hours, and 30 minutes.” While 418 did not like the increase in time, they still thought that 2 days is better than 27. And so the conversion began.

POV: Phalanx Division - Recruit 39

As a member of the phalanx division, I was one the first into the battle area. I am known as recruit number 39 and I am the only female in the phalanx division. The march up the great amount of stairs certainly wasn’t pleasant with all that heavy equipment we were carrying but I know that it will keep us safer than most of the others. We reach the battlefield and yet, no enemy comes to greet us. But the air in this place smells all wrong like someone tampered with it. The commander can also sense it and most likely so could the great dragon. That is likely why they sent us up to this place. But I wonder what this place was like before it was changed into its current form. Though shortly after that thought, we reached the location the tactician Aurora planned for us and we started to form up. Soon the archers arrive and form up behind us. At last, the rest show up and after they form up, We await the enemies arrival.

----------------------------------------

POV: Pugilist Pair - Recruit 7

I am one of the only two pugilists in the force. I am recruit 7 and my partner, who I also consider my sworn brother, is recruit 13. We arrive at this battlefield expecting to be swarmed by enemies but there isn’t a single enemy in sight. This quiet is disconcerting. Especially since the great dragon had said they had sensed many presences up there. Most likely noticing my discontented mood, 13 asked me what was wrong. I responded to that with this eerie quietness. He didn’t quite understand and I told him that is fine and to be ready to fight. I hope this quietness clears soon.

POV: Archer Group: Longbowmen - Recruit 49

My designation is recruit 49 and amongst the archers, I am one of two who wield a longbow. In waiting for the enemy to appear the only other Longbowman recruit 48 started to talk to me.

“Huh look at all of the enemies seemed to have run away from my greatness”

He was loud and certainly full of himself. Though he did bring up an interesting idea, what if the enemies that were sensed earlier were running away from something. However for my part I remained silent.

So when the enemy appears, how about a little wager? Whoever kills more targets gets a third of the loser's meal for the next week of meals.”

I, of course, didn't say anything. Though, I did nod in agreement. He seemed happy to think that he was gonna get an extra third. And I was happy I was gonna kick this asshat's pride into the dirt. The extra food would also be a nice bonus as I am a growing women after all.

----------------------------------------

POV: Silvanus

“These recruits are acting a bit too relaxed”

I have been observing the various troops under my command. And I am not pleased with how a majority of my troops were acting. This is a serious affair that even the great Dragon was worried that something will go wrong and yet, these troops are acting like this is basic training. Can’t they see the danger yet looms all around us.

“This is their first excursion. Of course they won’t take it as seriously as they should.” Alfred responded to me. “But Even so, There are still those who can sense the danger.”

He was right in both of his points and I realized that I still had a long way to go as a commander.

“It seems I still have a long way to go before I can command the respect of my troops.”

The old woman standing next to me smiled and said: “Now that's not true. If they did not respect you they would not still be in formation. But that is just this old woman’s ramblings.”

I smiled “thanks for your advice Yaga, it really helps.”

She doesn’t say anything, just smiles. Suddenly a voice rises up above the rest, it’s Phyllis.

Stolen from its original source, this story is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

“I spy movement in the distance, it's likely the undead. I calculate that they will be here in 5 minutes”

Persephone gets excited and almost leaps in the fray but Alfred tells her to stay put.

“We are here to assist on any foes to difficult for the troops to defeat, not to defeat all the enemies our selves”

“That so Lame” She whines.

I ignored her whining and ordered my troops “Ready up troops we got hostiles approaching.

----------------------------------------

POV: Axemen Division - Recruit 3

After receiving the commander’s orders we braced for the hostile. And then we saw them. As part of the frontline we were one of the first groups to sight the enemy. A large group of undead about 3 to 4 feet tall approached us, some still had flesh while others were all bone. But they all appeared to be the same species: Dwarves. As soon as they saw us that was when the conflict truly began.

----------------------------------------

POV: 418

“Zombie dwarfs I shouldn't be surprised, this was once the capital city of the dwarves after all.” As the war above rages on, my control of territory has increased. I was able to see much more of the area above and I learned I had hit the jackpot. While yes the city was in fact in ruins this still allowed me to get an idea of how to lay out the town. No matter how antiquated it may be it is still a town design that belongs in this world. But still something is bothering me. Are these undead really the source of the necrotic energies filling the area? They seem quite weak and haven’t been able to take down a single one of my recruits. I honestly get a bad feeling about all this. I pray that it's wrong.

----------------------------------------

POV: Prometheus

Thank the source for all this wonderful fuel. It puts up so little of a fight, that it is practically feeding itself to me. The sources other creatures are fighting over there and the ones with higher power than me are sitting back observing. But I sense something hidden in the darkness, something powerful. I hope it comes here as my senses feel that it would burn so well.

----------------------------------------

POV: Blade Dancers - Recruit 36

The battle rages as we dance our blades amongst scores of unending foes. The sounds of combat echo out all around us. Blades slash and pierce. Arrow wiz far above our heads. Scores fall and yet more still replace them. Maybe this is what the great dragon was worried about. And yet Despite the waves of undead there is spot the are avoiding. Why?

----------------------------------------

POV : Maul Warriors - Recruit 11On the eastern flank there are a lot more undead that are skeletal. It is quite odd that all the skeletons are over here. It's like something stole their flesh. But this thought only lasts a moment as I'm suddenly attacked by more skeletons. I hope this battle is over soon. I'm exhausted swinging around this huge mallet.

----------------------------------------

POV: Phalanx Division - Recruit 42

"Hold the Line, don't let them break through, the archers are behind us." This group of undead are quite clever as it has less interest in attacking us in the phalanx troops and trying to break through to get the archers. But us of the phalanx division will not let them through that easily however us and the archers cant keep this up as the archers are ruining out of arrows and we are getting exhausted.

----------------------------------------

POV: Frontlines Division: Sword and Shield - Recruit 58

POV: Frontlines Division: Sword and Shield - Recruit 58

“Is there no end to this wave of the dead?” I say as I slice yet another zombie dwarf.

Hey if you have time to complain you can kill more zombies.” responds Recruit 27.

“Enough with the chit-chat, focus on the task at hand.” recruit 2 says to us.

Recruits 8 and 46 are fighting back to back taking down undead by the dozens yet they are visibly exhausted. We all are. Just as it feels like the undead are finally going to break through we hear recruit 44 say:

“I see a major clearing of enemies. We are almost through this.”

Those words lifted everyone's spirits.

----------------------------------------

POV: Halberdiers - Recruit 24

“Keep pushing they’re almost out of troops”

We of the ha;bard squad are helping the remaining groups that are still fighting with the stragglers. Like Our mighty commander we wield the mighty halberd and we will show it power to the whole army. Shortly after that we defeat the last undead in the area and then collapse, exhausted.

----------------------------------------

POV: Alfred

“It seems the undead waves wave been rent asunder”

“It's so sad I didn’t get to do anything. The girl says, pretending to cry her eyes out.

Enough crying, Persephone you're not fooling anyone,” Silvanus says,“Well anyways it looks like it is just about time to round up our troops and send them home.”

“ No, the necrotic energies haven’t cleared, it isn't over yet. Yaga said her tone indicating worry.

It is at this moment I notice an extremely powerful presence approaching. I immediately told Silvanus : “this isn't over yet, ready the troops.”

He understood immediately “All troops form up, a strong foe is approaching.”

----------------------------------------

POV: 418

As the waves of foes begin to clear up, the necrotic energies don’t seem to decrease at all. It is at this point that I see it and my response is “that’s one ugly mother…”

----------------------------------------

Undead don't attack living races for vitalic energies, that is what vampires do. Vampires suck out blood because that is where the highest concentration of vitalic energies is. Undead on the other hand need to consume mana. Mana's highest quantities can be found in the flesh closest to the skin. Undead like all dungeon creatures need to eat however, they lack the organ function to allow them to eat regular food so they seek sources of mana in high quantities which tend to be living creatures. As they attack, they accumulate intelligence which allows them to act less insane. This however doesn't truly satiate their hunger. This explains most undead except liches which are usually caused by a mortal race connecting their soul to an object and once their soul is in said object the body deteriorates in to an undead -Yolko Terson The Paradox of undead Intelligence
