Chapter 1: Awakening

Chapter 1: Awakening

A figure with an extremely faint presence lies on the floor of a cuboid room. In the center of this room lies a black pillar that has a golden gem floating above it. Suddenly a noise could be heard. The figure that was lying on the floor started to groan and get up off the floor.

“Oww... my head,” the figure said in a tone that sounded like someone suffering from a hangover.

As the figure starts to become more aware of their surroundings, their mood begins to sour and one could say it even flared-up with a tinge of anger.

“Isaac, If this is another one of your amusing jokes,” it began, “ then you can just remove your sorry ass from… my… a…part…ment…”

That’s when the figure realized that it was in a place that they could not recognize. With a look of disbelief they gaze down at their hands, only to realize that they were not there. No that wasn’t quite right, their form had something like an outline that faintly shimmered like some movie’s idea of invisibility. Though it seemed that they lacked a physical form.

“Well, this is new.” The figure said in a voice that made it sound like their face held a bemused expression.

“Well…” the voice said snapping its focus to its current situation, “in all likelihood there are 2 things that are likely possibilities that explain my current predicament, One of them is that I’m in a dream, and another is that I was reincarnated or am in the process of being reincarnated.”

That second idea was thought up because of the literature that they had read when they were younger. They thoroughly enjoyed those types of stories. Escapism was a good safe haven as a teenager. Though the cant seem to remember the reason they got so in to it in the first place.

There was also the thought that this is the afterlife but something deep in the figure's mind seemed to reject that as a possibility.

Gained 2 RP

Gained 2 BP

Gained 2 TP

Gained 2 CP

“Well regardless of what the possible truth is,” the figure said refocusing their attention, “I need to take stock of the information that I currently have. Judging by how this room is, and assuming that this isn’t some kind of godly waiting room, this place is likely a dungeon. Though I’m not exactly sure where it stands in this potential new world. Since I haven’t been given some kind of order it was probably a safe bet that I am the dungeon itself. Which means somewhere nearby is my core. Now where is it…”

When rattling off their thoughts, the dungeon looked around the room. Quickly they spotted it, and the air around them softened, like they had cracked a smile.

“Of course it would be that,” the dungeon said with an amused chuckle.

On a pedestal with a fairly simple design and made of a grayish black stone lies the core. It was golden, and it was not a Sphere. Instead it was a shape that anyone who played a Table-top RPG would know, an icosahedron. The dungeon wondered, in their mind, if the shape was because of the connection between dungeons and that game.

“Let us see if there is any more information that I can glean from my memories, preferably about my identity on Earth,” the dungeon said.

So it searched a memory for a trace of its previous identity and while it found many things it couldn’t find a name. Alright, well instead of a name maybe a gender to give itself a temporary name but…

“Another blank.”

Just then, a thought popped into the head of the dungeon. If this is some kind of isekai then there has got to be some kind of status screen. And it though since it was a dungeon, it’s more than like there is some sort of menu or interface as well. So it decided to try a few things to get it to work. First was…

“Menu”

And then some text in boxes appeared on the right side of the dungeon's field of vision.

Status

Construction

Summon

Research

Map

Notepad

The dungeon got excited but then immediately started to frown once it remembered that it didn’t have hands.

“How the hell am I supposed to do anything with this? It’s not like I got any hands to press buttons.”

“Query received. Answer: By focusing your intentions on the option you wish to select it will automatically open. To close it after that, focus on closing it,” said an emotionless and androgynous voice with a slight feminine tinge explained.

“Oh, Okay,” the dungeon said, slightly startled in surprise by the response. But quickly focuses on the task and does what they were told about and opened the status screen. After a dozen or so minutes it closed the menu in the way the voice told.

The author's narrative has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

“That was very helpful, but who or what helped me?” Asked the dungeon inquisitively.

“Query Received. Answer: I’m a personal assistant program created by the complex theological computation matrix to help go through the massive nexus of knowledge that all dungeons have collected. Most call my kind dungeon guides,” explained the dungeon guide.

“Oh, so you're basically a personal assistant meaning you're supposed to help out with terminology that might not be familiar to me? And also give me advice when I ask for it? And if there is something I don't like about the way you speak to me, I can ask you to change it for me?" Asked the dungeon pointedly.

“Query Received. Answer: The answer to all of those questions is yes.

“Then,” the dungeon began requesting, “I ask you to stop responding to my questions with a ‘Query received’ and ‘answer.’ I would like to think I’m smart enough to tell when you’re answering a question.”

“Request Acknowledged. I will no longer reply with a ‘Query Received’ or ‘answer’ when replying to a question,” responds the dungeon guide.

“Thank you for that,” replies the dungeon. “By the way, do you know why there are 2 names listed in my status?”

“It is because one is your dungeon name and one is your core name.”

“Core Name?”

“Your Dungeon name is what the mortal races call the Dungeon where you reside. Since no one knows about your dungeon you are an unnamed dungeon. It can not be changed by you, only by the mortal races. While on the other hand your core name is what you call yourself. It is a name that only you can decide and can be freely changed.”

“Well right now I really don’t have a name because I'm not sure what gender this form is, so right now, I think I'll go by 418.

Core Name has been set to 418

“Guess I'm 418 now, guide,” said the newly christened 418

“Guide?”

“Yeah a shortened version of your name because it’s a pain in the ass to use your full name every time I want to talk about you. So guide, where in this world is my Dungeon?”

“Core pedestals are typically made out of local stone and the stone that your pedestal is made of is ebonstone. And that material is only found in one place, the ebonspines on the eastern continent of Ijula. Unfortunately that is a very bad place to be.”

“Why is that?”

“Around the entire base of the ebonspines there is a giant dungeon known as Ouroboros. It is known as a devourer of dungeons. It usually waits for dungeons to run into part of it, but eventually if you are around long enough it will pinpoint your location and come after you.”

“Shouldn’t I be fine up here in the mountains?”

“What does a starving man do to get a ripe fruit that is in a tree?”

“They climb in a way that no sane man would try to stop.”

“Once Ouroboros has you in its sights it won’t stop until one of you is dead.”

418 sighs while their mood sinks to defeated

“Well… I’m so fucking screwed,” said 418 plainly.
