9. Night Shift

9. Night Shift

“You’re putting me on nights?” Alice asked Alex.

“Yeah, we just had someone quit out on us, so we have a spot that HAS to be filled by

someone and no offense, but you’re the only expendable person we have right now on day shift.”

Alice sipped her coffee and looked around the chic coffee shop out the window, a little

worried because ever since the incident she has been pretty unnerved going out at night and it’s

something she’d going to be doing a lot now. Alex took her hand into his and looked lovingly

into her eyes. “I know, I hate this too. We’ll have to put us on hold for now though because our

schedules will be completely reversed.”

Alice hadn’t even realized that he was right. Even their days off would occasionally be

switched leaving almost no time to see each other. “I understand and I’m not the biggest fan of

this. But I get it.”

“Don’t worry, the second we can bring you back to days we will. For now I’ll make sure

you have a great mentor though.”

“Who?” Alice was curious who he had in mind. She only knew of one person on night

shift and after what happened the other night and wasn’t excited about working the same shift as

that guy.

“Levi.”

“That drunk from the other night, you’re gonna put me with him?”

“I know what you might be thinking but trust me. He is by far the best and second hardest

worker here. Believe it or not he gets whatever job he’s job given done better and faster than

even me.”

Alice found that awfully hard to believe, but after spending so much time with Alex, he

had never given her a reason not to distrust him. Especially when it came to the warehouse, he

treated it like his own baby.

“Okay, when will you guys be moving me there? Like a week or something?”

Alex rubbed the back of his neck, “Actually starting tomorrow you’ll be working nights.”

“I was just starting to adjust to the schedule.”

The couple finished their coffee in a somewhat solemn fashion since this was the last

time they’d be able to go out like this for a while. When they finished up and parted ways, Alice

went home and wrote about her thoughts on the whole situation then stayed up until 4am on a

horror movie marathon. She wanted to stay up as late as she could in order to try and assimilate

to her soon-to-be sleep schedule.

It was 4pm when Alice woke up, she had ample time to relax and get ready before

heading into work. She was less enthusiastic than usual and this was partly from having to rewire

her brain on this new schedule, but it was mostly because she was going to be working side by

side with the troublemaking town drunk. At first she felt a little sorry for him and somewhat

related with being an outcast in a community that was so close-knit, but the more she got to

know about him and after seeing him the other night, Alice came to realize on some level he had

brought this on himself. Which was the polar opposite of what her situation had been.
