2. Routine

Alex took Alice to the middle of the warehouse where there were a bunch of

aisles with different sized boxes moving along the tracks. “This is where we stack pallets,

on the boxes are labels that say how many boxes are going onto this pallet and some

other basic information about the order. I’ll help you stack this one and then I’ll let you

handle the next one.” Alex and Alice continued stacking the pallet full of cardboard

boxes of different sizes and filled with various items.

When they finished, Alice had started to get pretty heated and sweat, so she

removed her tan jacket setting it on a table behind her. When she turned back around, she

caught Alex giving her a certain look, but he looked away as soon as he caught Alice

staring back at him. He was a little embarrassed. It wasn’t a look Alice was unfamiliar

with. It was a little unnerving though. she just brushed it off for now and said to him

“Alright what now?”

Alex picked up a big roll of plastic wrap next to the pallet and said “I’m glad you

asked. Now is when we wrap the pallet up and call one of the forklifts to come move it

into the right truck.” Alex unrolled some plastic and placed it underneath one of the

bottom boxes, then he kicked the metal base under the pallet and it began to spin. As the

pallet spun Alex stood still, ensuring the pallet was properly wrapped up and wouldn’t

come apart.

He finished up and ripped the plastic off then whistled over to Meredith who

promptly came and took the pallet into a truck. Alex looked at Alice with the same hint of

attraction still lurking behind his dark brown eyes. He then said to her “Easy right? Now

you’re up.” He pointed to the next aisle that was beginning to get filled with boxes. Alice

swiftly made her way over and started to stack the pallet.

Doing this alone was definitely a lot more taxing, she thought to herself. But it

was still doable and not completely terrible. She stacked the last box atop the pallet, it

wasn’t as pretty as when Alex was helping her, but it was good enough. “Good Job! Not

bad for your first time, now you just have to wrap it up.” Alice grabbed some plastic

wrap and began to spin the pallet, but after a couple spins, she dropped the wrap and said

“Ow!”

Alex rushed beside her and asked, “What’s wrong?”

Alice picked back up the plastic wrap and said, “It started to burn my hands as it

spun.”

Alex smacked himself in the head “Damn, I’m such an idiot. I never noticed that

you weren’t wearing gloves! Didn't I tell you to bring some?” Alice recalled Alex

mentioning gloves, but it slipped her mind to purchase some. “Here just borrow mine for

now.” Alex took his gloves off and gave them to Alice, she then properly wrapped the

pallet now that her hands could no longer feel the burning of the friction.

Meredith came over and snatched up the pallet, giving Alice an approving smile.

“Onto the next one.” Alex said and the 2 made their way to the next aisle. He sat aside

again, overseeing Alice as she made the pallet. He was happy that she seemed to be a

quick learner and he was a bit excited that he was going to be working side by side with

such an attractive young lady. He thought to himself ‘Maybe there would be an

opportunity for a spark to develop between them if she stayed on day shift, they’d be

working 5 days a week together for 12-hour shifts from 6am to 6pm.’
