Levi opened his eyes, the light was overwhelming, his body was throbbing and
sore all over.
“Oh my God, there’s a person!” A man’s voice echoed over the crashing of waves.
Levi groaned and tried to stand up, but was held down.
He looked to his right; his arm was pinned under what appeared to be the wreckage of a small boat.
“Hurry and get that dinghy off of him!” the man’s voice echoed once again.
Levi tried to look at the man yelling, but he was out of his peripheral.
“1, 2, 3. Lift!” the man’s voice yelled.
All of the sudden the pressure on Levi’s side was gone and he was surrounded by a group of
men in bright orange vest.
“Mother Mary, someone put pressure on that arm before this boy bleeds to death! Medic!” The man yelled.
Levi was still lost in a daze. Was this a dream he wondered.
One of the men began pressing his knee into Levi’s right arm and he was filled with a sudden jolt of pain. He couldn’t help but to scream because of it. Then
he questioned himself, “Wait is that voice… me?” After that everything began to grow dark.
Levi opened his eyes once more, this time he was somewhere much more
comfortable. He took in his surroundings. The room was pristine, there was a big window
in the front of him and fluorescent lighting above him. He was in a bed, wrapped in
blankets. Levi went to stand up, but his entire right side wasn’t responding and was filled
with a mild searing pain. He used his other arm to check under the blankets. His right arm
and leg were in casts and bandages and he was wearing a blue gown.
His left arm had a few bandages but nothing major, he began to feel around his torso. There were some
stiches and a solid amount of bruising around his ribs. He began to feel his face, his lips
were swollen and chapped.
That’s when he realized that his right eye was almost completely swollen shot and he had stitches in the right side of his head. He felt them and
it stung a bit.
He noticed a big green button next to him and pressed it with his good arm.
A stocky middle-aged African American woman entered the room wearing
scrubs. “Well hello there, young man. Do you know where you are.”
Levi tried to respond but his throat felt like it was filled with sand.
“Can you talk?” she asked.
Levi shook his head.
“Hold on a second, I’ll be right back.” The woman left and returned with
a pen and paper. “Here, why don’t you write down your name along with who your
parents are.”
Levi took the pen and paper, but didn’t know what to write.
“What’s wrong, honey?”
Levi looked at the woman with a confused yet sad expression across his ravaged face.
“Okay, we’ll come back to that. How about trying to answer some other questions

for me?”
Levi nodded.
“Do you know where you are or what happened to you?”
Levi shook his head.
The nurse gave a slight look of concern then said, “Let me go get the doctor for you, just wait one more minute. Is that alright with you?”
Levi nodded.
The nurse left and grabbed a man in a white coat, Levi couldn’t hear what was said but he
could see the sadness on the woman’s face as she spoke.
She returned with the doctor who said “Hey there buddy, Mary is telling me that
you’re having some trouble remembering some things. That’s okay, for now just worry
about getting better.”
Levi continued looking sad and confused.
The nurse came over to him and put her hand on his shoulder. “It’s all okay now, that nightmare is over.” She
said this with a warming smile across her face.
His face felt wet ‘What is this?’ he thought.
“It’s okay, baby. Let it out.” The nurse began to rub his shoulder.
Levi began to drift off again.
A series over rapid beeping that filled the room.
“Honey, look at me! Don’t close your eyes, look at me!” the nurse’s voice was filled with concern. “Doctor!”
Levi closed his eyes. The beep was long and consecutive as Levi drifted off.
The Doctor yelled. “Call a code, get me a crash cart and prep the OR stat!”
A pounding filled Levi’s chest and he closed his eyes.
Levi opened his eyes again and it felt as if an eternity had passed. He looked
around, the room was the same, but now he felt like his chest was tighter and that nurse
was sleeping next to his bed. He coughed and she shot up.
“Hey there baby, we thought we lost you for a while. How are you feeling?”
Levi shrugged.
“That is expected, you had some internal bleeding and we had to open you up to fix it. Thankfully we have Dr.
Raven here and he’s the best, he fixed you up and you will be up and around in no time.
For now, just get some rest, okay?”
Levi did as he was told and returned to sleep.
After waking up he felt good as new and pressed the green button again.
The nurse returned. “You were out for a while that time, how are you feeling?”
Levi nodded.
“Good I’m glad, you look much better too. At this rate, another couple weeks and you’ll
be in perfect health. You’re healing better than I’ve ever seen in my 2 decades of
experience. Can you talk yet?”
Levi opened his mouth, but the words still eluded him.
“Alright, just get some more rest and hopefully next time I see you we can talk. I’m Mary
by the way, ask for me if you need anything at all.”
Levi went back to sleep.
When he woke backup and pressed the button.
A new nurse walked in, an old woman with grey hair. “Good morning, darling. How can I help you?” she asked.
“Mary?” Levi spoke for the first time in what felt like an eternity.
“Sure thing, I’ll go get her for you. She'll be thrilled that you called for her."
The nurse left and Mary entered the room. “They said you asked for me.” Mary spoke with a big grin across her face.
“Morning.” Levi said to her with a smile, his body hurt substantially less and his eye was now healed.
Mary’s face began to glow. “Oh my God, you have a wonderful voice.”
Levi blushed and scratched his head. “So, what happened and where am I?”
Mary continued to smile as she answered him “You’re in South State Louisiana Hospital, you washed up in Hurricane
Julian on the beach underneath some wreckage. Do you remember anything?”
Levi shook his head.
Mary sat beside him and took his right hand.
“I guess I’m not as broken anymore.” Levi looked at his body parts that were no longer in casts.
“I know, it’s incredible. You’ve healed numerous broken bones in record time, 3 weeks. Do you have
any other questions?”
Levi shook his head again, “No I am pretty hungry though.”
“We can fix that.” Mary left and returned with a feast of hospital food.
Levi ate in for what also felt like the first time in an eternity.
“Well now that you’re eating again, how about we get some of these tubes out of you?”
Levi answered, “I’d like that.”
After he finished eating, he decided to rest some more before getting his GI tube removed.
He was awoken in pitch black by Mary and 2 strange men in masks and all black
clothing. She spoke to him in a kind whisper “Hey, baby, you’re going to go with these
gentlemen now and they’re going to take care of you from now on. Okay, Leviathan?”
Levi began to panic; this didn’t feel right at all. He tried to struggle against the 2 men
who began to pick him up into a wheelchair, but his body felt weak and heavy.
“Calm down, you’ll be safer with us.” One of the men said in a stern tone.
It just made the fear grow even more in Levi.
Mary looked at the men and said, “It’s okay, he won’t be able to do much until the sedative wears off later.”
As they strapped him in, he looked at the kind nurse who had been there for him and tears filled his eyes. “Mary?” his voice was
pleading. Then the men placed a blindfold over his face.
His last sight was Mary’s kind and betraying smile.
