“It’s been 1 week since Levi was taken; the blizzard destroyed any trace of where he was taken too. There are no leads on the man that abducted him, apparently, he was using an alias and had been living here only a few months with no family or friends. Even the car he used was reported stolen the day before.
I have so many questions, but the biggest one is if Levi’s okay. I’m hoping he found a way to escape and he’s on his way back to us right now. The police are still looking, but they think that Levi and that man got caught in the storm.
I refuse to believe that though, if that was true then the man would’ve bled out from where I shot him, and Levi would’ve been able to easily escape and come back here. Even if he didn’t come back to this town that hates him, I know that he would’ve at least let me know he’s safe.
That’s it. I just want to know he’s safe.”
Tears began to land on the page Alice was writing on, it felt like everything was starting to fall apart all over again. All the time and effort, working on herself and going to therapy felt useless in this time of crisis. What was it all for if everywhere she went her life would be taken away from her and from things that were beyond her control.
Alice wiped her eyes and got dressed into winter clothing and grabbed a stack of missing posters from her desk. Written on the posters was a description of Levi, but no picture. In all his time in Heart, not a single phot was taken of him.
Every day since Levi’s disappearance, Alice had gone all around town to hang the missing posters and every day they kept getting torn down by the townsfolk who had despised Levi.
Alice didn’t care, she was determined to help find Levi in whatever way she could. Alex was even kind enough to give her time off until the dust settled on this whole situation.
As Alice finished getting ready, she went out the door and made her rounds throughout the town. Hanging up dozens of missing posters on the main roads and after a couple hours, when she was done, she made her way to the police department. The snow had finally cleared up, so there were no more excuses that the sheriffs could use to avoid organizing a search party to comb the woods for Levi.
Unauthorized tale usage: if you spot this story on Amazon, report the violation.
She parked beside the curb outside the snow covered matte black building, it was a smaller building, but it held more than enough police officers to keep the peace in the small mountain town.
As she walked up the steps into the building, a few cops that had been smoking outside rolled their eyes at her. Every time she finished hanging the posters around town, she went to the police station and asked around for updates on Levi’s case along with when the search part was going to be. Every day they told her the same thing, “There are no updates, and we can’t send good men out there to freeze to death.”
She knew today was going to be different though. To her surprise the front desk was manned by 2 familiar faces.
The men stood up, Tony looked at Nickels and said “We’ll look what the cat dragged in.”
Nickels let out an annoyed groan.
Alice approached them and crossed her arms. “You 2 can guess what I’m about to say.”
Nickels answered, “Yes we can.”
Tony joined in “Yup and we’re already on it. The search is starting tomorrow at 7am sharp, so don’t be late because we’ll know. Nickels and I will be heading it.”
Alice felt a combination of shock and relief “Really?! Thank you, but why do you guys want to help after everything that happened?”
Tony and Nickels exchanged looks “Look, we’re sorry about that. Let’s just chalk it up to a misunderstanding. We want to help because no one deserves to be taken and hurt like that. Despite his reputation, it’s clear he’s not a bad guy. Otherwise, he would’ve done a lot worse to me, the guy that took him is a different story. He left Nickels here all kinds of messed up. He’s the one we really have to get back at. A monster like that needs to be stopped and we want to be the ones to do it.”
Nickels fist bumped Tony “Hell yeah, brother.”
Alice was speechless, it was clear that Tony meant every word that he said. “Thank you, I’ll see you guys tomorrow.”
Alice waived and started heading back home to eat and get ready for tomorrow, she knew that even though the snow had begun to clear up that the search wouldn’t be easy because there was still over a foot of snow on the ground. The effort was a small price to pay if it meant finding Levi faster.
After getting home, Alice made herself a sandwich and watched TV until it was time to go to bed. For the first time these past few days, she fell asleep with some hope.
