67.Survival of the fittest

The cat-wolf trapped in the pit emitted howls, and the other cat-wolves lingered around, reluctant to leave. As I observed, I found it strange, but upon closer inspection, I discovered the clue: the one that fell into the pit was a male cat-wolf, while the other three were females. This male cat-wolf, instead of being the first to eat, was likely the leader of their pack, and it should be him who dined first.

I waited left and right, but there was no sign of them leaving. I had no choice but to quietly return to the cave. However, I wasn't in a hurry; they couldn't stay there forever, right? Back in the cave, I informed the girls of the situation, and everyone was excited. Since success happened once, the likelihood of success a second time was high.

With the cat-wolf's fur, we could survive the harsh winter. Moreover, this cat-wolf was about one meter long, and its weight couldn't be less than thirty kilograms. So much meat would be enough for us to eat for a long time. Although the prey hadn't been brought back yet, Su Jie was already discussing the celebration plan for the night with Li Lin.

After lunch, I hurried to the trap set in the morning and secretly observed. The result surprised me even more; those cat-wolves still hadn't left. What's more peculiar was that three smaller cat-wolves with long arms swaggered over.

These female cat-wolves and the cubs lay near the trap, eyes fixed on the trapped male cat-wolf, emitting mournful howls.

Listening, I suddenly felt uncomfortable. It seemed like I had destroyed a happy family, and I felt a sense of guilt. There was even a feeling that this male cat-wolf and I were very similar. Wasn't I also bearing the responsibility of ensuring the survival of several women? To some extent, I sympathized with that male cat-wolf.

In order not to end up like it did today, I must strive to make myself stronger and smarter! "The law of survival in nature is survival of the fittest. If I don't do this, we will die," I comforted myself.

Next, I didn't continue to wait, as I even saw a cat-wolf bringing food and feeding the trapped fellow. How long would they stay intertwined like this?

Seeing the weather getting colder, I couldn't procrastinate any longer. With gritted teeth, I took a shot from afar at those cat-wolves! Although my marksmanship was, as always, terrible, the shot missed directly, and the bullet landed in the soil near the trap, producing a muffled sound. The gunshot was loud, scaring away the female cat-wolves, who quickly ran off and disappeared into the jungle.

I knew they were only scared away temporarily and might come back, as the male cat-wolf was still there. As expected, not long after, rustling sounds came from the bushes, and those fellows agilely reappeared.

Without waiting for them to stabilize, I fired another shot! This time, miraculously, I hit a female cat-wolf's buttocks, and it yelped in agony, escaping with blood flowing. The other cat-wolves were frightened away again.

After repeating this three or five times, those cat-wolves realized the danger here and dared not approach anymore. I breathed a sigh of relief, knowing my moment had come!
