37.Hu Yijian's plot

Though Su Jie and I proceeded cautiously and slowly, we encountered some troubles along the way. We not only came across venomous snakes more than once but also had a close call with me almost consuming poisonous wild berries.

To my delight, I spotted some sika deer in the woods.

The reason for my joy was that with the presence of sika deer, a large herbivorous mammal, our food source became richer. I planned to seize the opportunity to hunt one soon. I've heard that deer meat has a hint of sweetness and is highly nutritious. Although I've never tried it, my anticipation was high.

However, what worried me was that since there were sika deer, large carnivorous predators were likely to exist on this island.

This made me more vigilant. Nevertheless, Su Jie and I were relieved that we didn't encounter any predators on our way to the mountaintop. Upon reaching the summit, we found a small clearing covered in weeds. Su Jie and I cleared the weeds, leaving behind a giant "SOS" distress signal.

"Now, if a plane passes by, they're bound to spot this signal. We might get rescued," I wiped the sweat from my forehead, feeling a hint of happiness. Although I sensed that things might not be that simple, it was a method, and we had to give it our best. With effort, there was at least a glimmer of hope; doing nothing would mean giving up all possibilities.

After completing this task, Su Jie's mood improved significantly. On our way back, she talked to me a lot, telling me that her radical ideas were just impulsive at first. She believed that the rescue team must have encountered an accident, and a new rescue team would come sooner or later. Now, all we had to do was find every possible way to survive.

As we hunted on our way back, unfortunately, luck wasn't on our side today. Exhausted after most of the day, I only managed to catch two small rabbits about the size of my palm. Clearly, it wasn't enough for the six of us. We had to gather more wild fruits.

This made me furrow my brows, feeling somewhat worried. "Our food situation is still critical. If we can't hunt, we'll have to go hungry in the future. We must come up with a more reliable solution."

Contemplating on the way, when I returned to the cave, I found Hu Yijian sitting inside, not working outside.

This instantly angered me, and I walked over, kicking him in the butt so hard that he almost got kicked out. He howled in pain, a hint of resentment flashing in his eyes. But he quickly shouted, "Big Wei, don't be mad, listen to me. It's not that I'm not working; I found something good and planned to take you to see it!"

"What good thing? If you don't explain clearly, don't expect lunch today!" I said coldly.

"You can rest assured; my discovery will definitely make you jump for joy!" Hu Yijian patted his chest, showing great confidence.

I didn't believe his assurance at all; this guy was good at exaggerating. Trusting him would be foolish. Seeing my disdain, Hu Yijian panicked and quickly said, "This time it's true! I found a large field of wheat near the grassland not far away! With that wheat, we'll have something to eat."

Listening to his words, I chuckled, "Wheat? How can there be wheat on this deserted island? What you saw should be wild barley. Except for a few varieties, most wild barley is indistinguishable from weeds and is inedible!" I suspected that what he saw wasn't genuine wheat but a type of wild grass called quackgrass. I had seen quite a lot of this grass around these days. This guy, Hu Yijian, didn't bother to check and probably misidentified it.

Hu Yijian, upon hearing my words, was stunned, muttering, "I don't know what wild barley is. The one at home is wheat; maybe it really is wheat!"

I shook my head, sure that it couldn't be wheat. However, there were numerous varieties of wild barley, and a very small number were edible. This filled me with a glimmer of hope. I asked Hu Yijian to lead the way, intending to personally check the situation.

This time, Hu Yijian was very enthusiastic about guiding me, walking quite fast. Soon, he stopped and pointed to the grassland ahead. "Look, there seems to be a black hole in the midst of the wheat!" he exclaimed.

I thought he was exaggerating again, but I turned to look. Approaching, I was surprised to find a hole with a diameter exceeding a meter, its depth unseen in the midst of the grass.

This grassland was in the shadow of a small hill, and the light was dim. The hole was pitch black, and I couldn't see the bottom at the moment. How could such a deep hole naturally form here? The possibility seemed quite slim.

Shocked, I was about to turn back when suddenly I heard Hu Yijian shout behind me, "Go down, you!"
