Why? (5)

Beneath the thicket of trees, on a mountain next to the sea.

Lies a forest that used to be dominated by distinct creatures and monsters, yet amidst all of them, one kind rose above the others.

With hardened hides, with fastened feet they became the king of the forest, singlehandedly wiping every other beast that used to inhabit it.

Yet because of the high walls and the endless sea, they couldn't escape the overbearing evergreen.

With prey running scarcely, some of them devoured their own packs to survive.

One such creature stood before a dark-skinned man.

Its fur which was once blue soon changed as it killed more and more of its kind.

As it ate voraciously, it evolved.

It no longer cared for speed and craved strength, it's hide grew sturdier, its legs now crushes skulls, its teeth now slices bone, its frail body was now colossal.

Its eyes full of anticipation gazed at the man.

The scarlet beast hasn't eaten anything for days as the wolves that use to fight him now just run away.

Soon it started moving, with each step the ground shooked slightly.

*BANG* *BANG* *BANG*

The bullets coming from the man's pistol managed to go through its scarlet hide but hit no fatal organs.

It opened its massive jaws and charged at the man.

The man quickly rolled to the side making the wolf's fangs collide with a tree.

The poor thing was cut in half and fell to the ground.

Wasting no time the wolf raised one of its claws.

*BANG*

The man shot another bullet.

The wolf staggered back.

The bullet pierced through its skin but did not reach its skull.

The wolf growled fiercely at the man.

It has been a while since it encountered a prey that made it bleed.

The man seeing that the wolf was pushed back readied himself to shoot again.

*CLICK*

The man looked surprised for a moment as he gaze at his gun for a split second.

The big beast wasted no time and bolted at him.

As the man felt the ground beneath him rumble.

He immediately threw his entire body to the side.

His clothes were now full of sweat and mud.

But the wolf anticipated it and after its jaw missed the man by a hair's breadth.

He raised his right claw to where the man fell.

Yet before it could crush the man, a murder of crows smothered its face.

With the sudden obstruction of vision, it shook its head violently trying to shake them off.

Yet they persisted and sunk their claws deeper into the wolf.

With the sudden pain, the wolf now banged its head on a tree.

One of the crows was crushed yet no flesh came out and simply vanished.

It banged its head again.

Another crow fell to the ground and was crushed by the heavy hinds of the wolf.

And again,

The last crow met the soil and the wolf immediately opened its jaws and devoured it.

Yet it tasted no blood only air.

After finally being able to see, it scanned its surroundings trying to find any semblance of the dark-skinned man.

Yet its sharp eyes see no tracks, its sensitive ears hear no sound, and powerful nose smell no stench.

It growled in fury, another prey have escaped his grasp.

As it was about to leave with disappointment, a faint whiff was taken in by its nose.

A filthy smile crept on its face and quickly went towards the source of the smell.

Its colossal size shaking the still trees as it sprints.

It got closer and closer but eventually, he found where the stench was coming from.

Yet the beast had a confused expression apparent on its face.

On the ground lay a black shirt.

*BANG*

Suddenly, a bullet flew into the air.

The wolf howled in pain, its left eye pierced by a lead.

Soon, a man walked out from within the trees, his steps uttered no sound.

As the wolf peer into the man's eyes with its remaining vision.

Its scarlet fur slowly stood up.

What it saw was a gaze that lacked any joy or sorrow.

It was devoid of life yet stood sharp as it looked straight at it.

Deep within the wolf, it knew, that those were the eyes of a predator.

Soon the scarlet beast felt an emotion that it has long since forgotten.

Fear,

For the first time after killing so many of its kind, butchering and maiming any of those who dared to fight.

The scarlet wolf ran with its tail tucked between its legs.

Through the pain of its bleeding eye, and through the wounds that accumulated in its face.

It dashed through the forest with the instinct to survive ringing in its head.

It ran and ran and after a while, it surveyed its surroundings with every fiber in its being.

There was nothing, feeling satisfied, it slowly rested its wounded body on the ground.

But before it could take a moment to breathe, it noticed a pale figure on top of a branch.

As it fought through the pain, it finally got a clearer look.

Its body shivered as he saw the indifferent gaze of the figure.

It immediately tried to stand up but,

*BANG*

A bullet flew through the air and now pierced his right eye.

With his sight covered in eternal darkness, it tried to escape as quickly as it can yet was stopped by its tracks as it collided head-first into a tree.

It hurriedly used its remaining senses to try to find the dark-skinned man,

Yet no sound nor smell ever came.

It swung its powerful claws recklessly to the wind trying to somehow hit the man.

But it was futile, soon it felt a sharp sensation on the top of its head.

A blood-stained dagger pierced through its cranium and into its brain.

It flopped onto the ground, with blood flowing from his eyes, and face littered with wounds.

The scarlet beast uttered its last breath and with that, the man unknowingly avenged the death of a thousand wolves.
