Chapter 37 : Shadows of Doubt

Chapter 37 : Shadows of Doubt

It took Aaron three attempts to extract all the cobblestones from the walls of the Ancient-Well, on the third attempt he even had to activate both of his defensive Skills because massive amounts of mud and sand started to fall inwards!

"That's it, pull me up quickly before I get myself buried alive for real." Aaron shouted while covering his head with his arms to shield his face.

Pio and Lucas were already feeling extremely anxious because when the earth surrounding the opening of the Ancient-Well started to sink and crumble inwards upon itself they couldn't see what's happening within the damn thing at all, their worry kept escalating whenever a piece of the earth disappeared into the abyss-like hole.

Until they heard the order and both men finally put their tense muscles to work and pulled at the rope with all the power their arms could deliver, both of them seemed like they're fighting for their lives while doing that task.

Pio was feeling extremely proud of himself at that time, being the one who bought that excellent quality rope from Arturo in the first place.

Now it doesn't seem like he made a loss in that deal at all.

*Cough* *Ptooey* *Ptooey*

Aaron was coughing and spitting sand while getting dragged by the two men on the soft soil surrounding the opening of the Ancient-Well which already doubled in width after the cobblestones were removed from its walls.

"Young master Ron Are you alright?" Pio asked while helping the kid remove the rope and the belt from his waist since he doesn't seem like he could see anything at all because there's a thick layer of mud covering his face!

"Bloody thing isn't filling at all. Even now after all what happened the level of water is still the same it once was when I Lucas and his dead goons tossed me inside! Help me clean my eyes, here's some water." Aaron said while retrieving some water flasks from his Inventory Space.

Lucas immediately started splashing the water on Aaron's face until he made sure that it's spotless clean, he even dried it for him by wiping it with his own sleeves.

Aaron gawked once he saw the change that happened to the surrounding terrain, while being down there he couldn't really see a thing with all the mud falling on his head and the dirt blocking his sight of the top.

Now he understands why it felt like he'd be losing the window of opportunity to actually get out from there before things went from bad to worse.

Simply because this bloody hole keeps growing wider and wider by the second with no end on sight!

"Guys. I think we should better move back towards the trees." Aaron muttered while retreating towards the location where he left the pile of cobblestones at the tree-line.

Pio and Lucas nodded before listening to the kid's advice.

"How far do you think this thing is going to reach?" Lucas asked while looking towards the edges which kept crashing downwards and the three of them could hear the splashing sound when the huge pieces of earth hit the water down below.

The process was gradually gaining momentum and it seemed more and more like a landslide!

All that was left after the earth lost its cohesive, adhesive, solid, and steady form. Was a web of root-system exposed to the eyes of the three of them.

"I'd love to say that the roots of these trees would do the job of stopping this crisis from advancing beyond a certain limit but, I don't really know and that's why we probably go as far as we can from here while we can. At least for now." Aaron had this keen sense of a bad premonition that's nearing this location ever since he saw the state of the opening, that's why he decided to use this chance to quickly transport the pile of cobblestones away from this location.

After all it's the reason why this is happening to begin with.

Pio and Lucas couldn't be any happier to oblige with this order, they would've ran much faster if it wasn't for their young master Ron's slow running speed.

Of course both men felt like cursing when they saw the kid empty his Inventory Space from all the cobblestones before turning back towards the pile he left.

'Just how greedy are you young master Ron?'

'Is it worth it to risk all our lives for some bloody stones?'

'I'd be happy to travel to every Village, Town, and City just to get you all the rocks you want until you're satisfied!'

'It'd be such a pathetic way to go really, I bet Ria wouldn't even feel sad for me if it happened.'

'Damn it! I still haven't got Betty pregnant yet!'

Pio and Lucas went through a lot of different emotions during these few back and forth journeys, their fears and worries kept increasing as much as the hole grew each time they saw it happen with their own eyes.

*Phew*

Aaron wiped his sweaty brows then smiled at the two men once all the cobblestones were stacked in one nice big pile.

"Now that we've collected all the cobblestones," He said before walking towards the location where he makes the red sand, "Let's go collect the sand and wood, shall we?"

Pio and Lucas felt like fainting once they heard what Aaron just said and exchanged a look only to see pure dread within the depth of each other eyes!

The nod these two men exchanged had only one meaning : "This kid is mad, greedy, and fearless beyond limit."

Getting to see how Aaron behaves somehow excited Pio and Lucas because it awakened a sense of adventure that was dormant deep within their souls, the two men grinned before running after the kid with a wide smile on their faces because only after interacting with him did they understand how alive it felt to be when they're near Aaron.

'I've been with young master Ron for less that a week yet my perspective on life has changed so much, somehow I feel like I've wasted all these years doing nothing.' Pio thought while watching the kid order the lumberjacks and the guards to hurry back to the village immediately before he started to store the tools, wood, and sacks of red sand.

Of course there was a lot of items and materials that it wouldn't be enough to transport everything all at once, but neither of the two men showed any expression of being displeased or even seemed to mind having to go through the emotional rollercoaster one more time really!

*Creak* *Crash*

The three of them heard the first tree when it tumbled into the hole, looking towards the source they could see a few more trees actually starting to tilt.

Not to mention how the earth tremor could be felt below their feet, the frequency kept increasing and the magnitude kept rising which made their hearts practically skip a few beats.

"Young master Ron!" Lucas finally gave in to his worries and shouted these words while thinking : 'Damn it. I still want to live and see my kids grow and have their own kids! I'm a selfish bastard who wants to spoil his naughty grandkids until they grow up rotten and give my bastards the worst time of their lives.'

Aaron nodded while storing the last pile of wood into the Inventory Space while saying : "Yeah. Let's get the fuck out of here, we're running all the way to the village this time. Afterwards we're immediately going back to collect our things, I'll be damned if I allow this bloody abyss to take my stuff." Afterwards he ran as fast as he could with his two followers flanking him from both sides.

The two men exchanged a look and saw expressions of relief on each other faces and they both smiled while thinking : 'Young master Ron really is greedy.'

'He's always the most reckless when his assets are in danger, isn't he?'

In the following hour the villagers near the west-gate could see Aaron, Pio, and Lucas running from and towards the forest.

Different stacks of wood, red sand, and cobblestones kept piling higher and higher after each journey the trio made.

The ten guards who were responsible for transporting all these materials to the construction site were not able to keep up with the kid at all.

But all the residents of Pine-Breeze Village heard the news about what's happening in that area of their village, they also got to hear the news about the cause of all these earth tremors which they keep feeling for a while now and why they're increasing in intensity.

The entire Village was practically shaking, some of them really began to worry for their own safety!

*Wheeze*

"Damn... damn it... I'm so tired... I can't... even feel anything below... my bloody knees!" Aaron was struggling to speak between gasps of air, his heart was racing at a speed nearing a thousand beats per second or so.

He was so thirsty but his hands never felt heavier in his two experiences of life.

He genuinely was afraid to choke himself to death if he drank any water in his current state.

'Fuck. I hate this feeling so much, I'm like a prisoner with my own body as my prison cell. Why do I have to wait years to get my grown-ass body back? This is so unfair!' Aaron spread his body on the ground and stared at the sky, while having these thoughts his chest was heaving up and down so erratically.

His clothes were drenched in sweat and he felt extremely exhausted.

'This little monster. My poor Flora would be worked to death if she fell in his hands, maybe it'd be for the best if she stays away from his bed in the future.' Lucas was already doubting himself and becoming not so sure if his aspirations for and imaginary future are in the right direction.

The man just witnessed his young master Ron finish what would be a tough marathon for any healthy adult, yes he's looking like a dead dog at the finish line but at least he got to reach that point!

'Young master Ron is such and amazing person, I'm so proud of him right now.' Pio thought while gasping for air just like the kid, he sat on the ground next to Aaron and helped himself by taking the flask from his hand and taking a swig at it before pouring some water on his head and enjoyed how cool it felt when it trickled down from his hair.

"That's nice." Pio sounded really silly yet extremely relaxed.

"Don't forget," Aaron looked towards Pio before continuing to say : "About me." He had to find the right opportunity between breaths before he could finally get a chance to speak these short and hurried words.

Thankfully his bodyguard got the message right and splashed the rest of the water in the flask on the kid's face.

Aaron felt like he was being revived from the dead, he could've almost swore that steam was rising from his head before it happened.

'Maybe all my circuits would've fried if Pio didn't do that.' Aaron thought while struggling to sit up.

System : Stamina +1

Once Aaron heard the system notification and confirmed the details with his own eyes, he was a bit satisfied with the reward yet slightly annoyed because the increase wasn't in percentage but a numerical addition.

Which, according to his own deduction, isn't a long-lasting benefit.

When his Physical-Defense increased thanks to the Equipment which he bought from the Store, the numerical addition pushed his state from [Average] to [Above-Average].

Meanwhile the percentage increase remained the same, since he could improve his state thanks to better, and much costlier, Equipment.

Then Aaron wouldn't hesitate to exchange all the numerical additions to any state that may happen in the future with percentage ones instead, which is much more advantageous in the future.

'Fuck it. At least I got something for my efforts, I'm still young with much room for improvement.' He thought while retrieving another flask of water and drank slowly while focusing on steadying his breath.

"Now that you've rested, let's go handle the mess you caused." Aaron's group were shocked when Sera suddenly appeared next to the boy and held him by the arm while saying so.

Before any of the two men could process what is going on, the beauty took a step forwards and ascended towards the sky with the kid dangling in the air from on of her hands.

"Don't you dare let go of me. For all those who could hear me... let me put that on the record right here, right now. That would be an esteemed Honorable Whispering Sister playing dirty! Remember me, Ron from Pine-Breeze Village was the one who said it. Pio and Lucas... if I don't return tonight then you two have my permission to avenge m-"

"You better shut your mouth right now before I do it for real." Sera's annoyed voice suddenly interrupted Aaron and the people below could hear it and feel the deep frustration within these words too.

"Yes. Please don't!" Aaron stiffened once he saw the frosty look the woman gave him when she glared towards him.

The people below smiled and laughed once they heard his immediate answer and thought to themselves : 'These two are really close, aren't they?'

"That's odd." Pio murmured to himself.

Lucas looked towards his partner and seemed interested to hear what he had in mind, "What is?" He asked.

Pio looked around to make sure nobody is around who could eavesdrop on their conversation before moving closer towards his partner and whispered these words : "Yesterday when young master Ron was negotiating with teacher Sen I noticed that he said that Pine-Breeze Village is his birthplace then he admonished me once I corrected him, I didn't really give it too much care since young master Ron is usually so eccentric and keeps doing and saying all sorts of strange things."

Lucas tilted his head to the side slightly, "What you mean to say is..."

"Didn't you notice how he addressed himself just now?" Pio whispered this question while reminding his partner, "He said Ron from "Pine-Breeze Village" but he really isn't from this Village, remember?"

"Maybe it's just his way of showing how much he loves it here!" Lucas said while raising an eyebrow.

Pio shook his head : "Still. Don't you find it odd? Yes, Snow brought him with her years ago when he was just a baby but... the kid always knew where he came from with his "beloved sister Snow". The few times I met him he'd always brag about this and that while mentioning his sister and his "home" surely you've heard your fair share during your altercation with young master Ron the day you... did what you did."

Lucas was gaping his mouth while thinking to himself : 'I'll be damned. Was that sissy-boy Rodd right in what he said about young master Ron days ago?'
