Chapter 47: The Medusa

Chapter 47: The Medusa

Behind her, she heard a hiss. By the name of the Goddess, we’re screwed. She had hoped the medusa would be too involved in her ritual to fight, but now, through the corner of her eye, she could see the flutter of robes and a mane of green writhing snakes walking to her left. I have to keep the knight in front of me and the gorgon to the side. A wide arcing swing came from the knight and while she parried, the force of the blow pushed her another step back. He almost has me in the corner. She again tried to stab at the knight’s visor, but he only ducked his helm so that her sword bounced off the helmet’s crown. Drawing back, she parried another powerful blow that sent her staggering back another step. If the medusa manages to move behind this guy … The knight swung his shield at her again, but this time she dodged it by jumping left. She needed to keep moving, shifting her position against her more heavily armored foe, but she could feel her body weakening as the blood drained out of her wounded side. If I don’t get a healing potion soon, I’m a goner.

To her right, she saw a blast of electricity drop a knight to the ground, just as another knight stepped into his place. Lefty had placed himself in another corner, his hands glowing as he prepared his next spell.

The shadow of the medusa appeared again on her left as the snake-haired gorgon walked calmly between two more knights. From the corner of her eye, Calista could see the monstrous woman’s gaze turning from one fight to the other. If she can manage to look either of us in the eyes, this is over.

However, Lefty was still standing. A burst of fire came from the far left corner. Something made of smoke and flame was battling with one of the knights. Did he manage to summon something? I thought he was almost out of mana.

Calista dodged another shield blow. The knight had her in the corner now as two of his fellows were closing in on her left, as the medusa lurked behind them. Is that bitch smiling?

When the knight drew his shield back, she tried to capitalize with another stab at his eyes. This time, the point of her blade found the corner of the helm’s eye slit and she felt her sword tip cut into the man’s face. She tried to swipe it across his face, but the knight drew back. His eyes blazed at her as a bloody scar now ran across his left eye and over his nose. The knight retaliated and doubled his assault, battering her with sword blow after sword blow as he furiously beat her back against the wall. Well, this is it then. I guess I should count myself lucky that I’ve lived this long. Whatever the mage is doing, he has the other two pretty occupied. She wondered if she could manage to pull something out of her inventory before the knight ran her through. I doubt it. He looks like he’s waiting for me to pull something like that.

Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.

Then the medusa let out an ear splitting shriek and a gust of wind blew through the room. In a glance, she looked past the hulking form of the knight and saw a fire elemental standing before the medusa. However, as the medusa’s shriek shook the air, her enemy changed form from a fire elemental into that of a knight turned to stone. An illusion? That clever bastard. Then, as the medusa stepped past her petrified victim and walked toward Calista, a cloud of white fog burst throughout the room as everything was suddenly covered in a white mist.

Seeing her chance, Calista leapt to her right, wall jumped, and bounced past the shadow of the confused knight. Then she jumped over a row of candles as the knight clanked and rattled behind her, searching. Sorry buddy, I don’t intend on being seen just yet. If I can just find that medusa … Then she heard a nervous hiss. Creeping over the stones, a robed shadow emerged from the fog. Stepping behind it, she raised her blade to the medusa’s neck.

“Surprise asshole,” she whispered. Dozens of the tiny snakes waved in her face and Calista grabbed a handful of the vipers to hold her foe at arm’s length. “Alright lady, you can do this the smart way or I can open your throat. Your choice.”

Through the mist, she saw the medusa smile. “Do you see me struggling little rogue?”

“Alright, then march.” Keeping her blade at the medusa’s throat, she pushed her prisoner in the direction where she hoped the door lay. I’d love to be searching for Lefty right now, but I don’t think I have that luxury. She didn’t know where the remaining knights were and right now she was too afraid to look. A few steps later, she heard a fireblast explode behind her. Then a robed hand reached from the fog as the mage appeared by her side.

“Good, you got her,” Lefty said. “I didn’t think my trick would work, but it did. Do you have anything for this horrid woman’s eyes?”

Calista nodded and a few steps later the fog parted as they found themselves walking through the hallway with the medusa as their prisoner.
