The Main Crew
Grendel / Beowulf - A high school junior that died tragically on Earth. Had his soul selected to be reincarnated as a troll in a dark fantasy world. The protagonist. His soul is being damaged because some idiot failed to properly attach the skill cores in the soul's vessel. He will probably die if the soul's vessel breaks. His memories of the past life are sealed too, but the seal is steadily eroding.
Helen - A blonde and not-so frail anymore magician girl that was brought to an adventure by her friends almost out of pity. She has a deep complex regrding her reproductive abilities and her sex appeal. It is believed she has some special powers over nature and plants. She was left behind when a wild troll appeared but befriended the monster. Was thrown into prison for violating taboo but escaped on her own. She fled to the northern kingdom but after a long time met Beowulf and fell in love with him. She didn't mind adding Marcy to the troll's intimate circle of brides (former population: 1) because it means she will be with her friend forever, even in marriage. The main heroine.
Marcy - A redhaired and well-endowed girl that is not bothered by the male gaze. Her happy-go-lucky femme-fatale demeanor got her awesome people skills. Trained as a guild receptionist and a scout, she was one of the friends that left Helen behind when the troll appeared. She later helped her escape jail and traveled north with her. After joining the troll's party with Helen in Colchester, she developed some complex feelings for him. Eventually due to some angelic meddling she and the troll became an item and the love triangle was born. She and Helen are Inseparable. Capital i.
Shraaizar - A crested naga C-rank monster, she is a snake with head and arms in the general shape of a human female but in the troll's own words 'without boobs' and covered in scales. Two long rows of scaly frills grow from the top of her head and run down until half of her body. Able to use both wind and healing magic. She met the troll unconscious in a creek and decided to warm herself using his body before eating him. The troll mistook that for kindness and decided to hang around her. They developed a relationship but she is very proud of her venom and is training to be more venomous than a wyvern. She ended up being tamed by the troll with a silk ribbon and is currently her right-hand... monster. The troll considers her like a sister.
Zahariel - A seraph, one of the nine greater angels that led the hosts of heaven against Lucifer in the great war that devastated the world. He was tasked with sealing the dungeon where Beelzebub, one of the generals of Lucifer made his lair. During the countless millennia, he slept his divine power leaked out and crystallized around him. He awakened with the body of a cherub and without any but a sliver of divine power because some troll ate the crystal around him. Decided to follow the troll in his adventures because he suspected the troll was evil. After being saved from certain doom by the troll his suspicions were challenged and they finally broke when he witnessed the desperate struggle the troll made to save a complete stranger.
The Monster Support Crew
Emory & the rat squad - Emory is an F-ranker, the rat pups are G-rank. A sewer rat with a taste for prison food. Was tamed by Helen and made her familiar with a druidic magic pact along with its 12 pups. One pup was eaten by a giant frog during an adventure. 11 to go.
Burly Monkey Tribe. E-rank demon monkeys tamed by the troll and currently managed by Shraaizar. Absolutely loyal to the troll, they revere him like a deity. They developed a weird rite of passage that involves fighting slimes naked after watching the way their leader did his things. Not very a smart troop as one can clearly see, but there is hope for the next generation.
Goblin artisans - F-rank. The troll, being a great admirer of goblin spears, ordered his monkey troop to round up all goblins that could craft spears. The fate of the goblins that could not craft spears is unknown, but maybe all this culling can speed up species selection.
Mittens - A C-rank blood mantis monster that is 15 feet from head to abdomen with deadly 4 foot long sharp scythes on the front limbs. The scythes' blades are not serrated. Red colored and vicious, can go into a frenzy if it smells blood. Was tamed by Helen in the dungeon formerly guarded by a seraph. Likes to eat human flesh, but is currently absitnent.
Harmonic Bees - A set of 10 bees that surived the Queen's struggle in the B5 hive level of Beezebub's Lair. They follow Helen as their rightful queen bee-person and are waiting for her to settle down in order to build a hive. Harmonic bees' ranks are decided as a swarm. A single bee is an F-rank monster, but a swarm of thousands is an A-rank threat. The troll has a viable queen larva stored in his timeless item box and intends to gift it to Helen when they make their home.
Kochurearc & Flame Fist Gorilla - The second strongest warrior of the Flame Fist tribe, they were attacked by a unknown maniac troll (not ours) and were wiped out. He managed to escape the slaughter with six females and fourteen gorilla children. They were in the process of being farmed for Exp by Mittens when the troll (our troll) Intervened and saved them. After losing a duel, swore allegiance to the troll (the one in the cover) and caused an upgrade on his monkey ruler title. Currently traveling to the Syrup Hill with the party.
Celestial Realm, Reincarnation Department, Transmigration Division
Jack - The division manager, has a deep contempt for regulation and the SSQA team. Likes to experiment and try new types of skills. His latest masterpiece (implanted in a certain troll) is a skill that can summon more skills. What can be cooler than that? It is the gift that keeps giving! He departed to the nameless world where a certain troll lives now with several skills that weren't QA certificated. But they are all of his design, nothing will go wrong.
The Newbie - A recent hire for the division, tries his best to do his job. His personality is sealed so he is very robot-like. But the standard procedure for the Department is to seal everyone's personalities. Individuality is a bitch. Was tasked by the supervisor to descend into a nameless world and retrieve two stray souls. He had some relation to this nameless world, but he forgot after countless millennia of repeated reincarnations.
Supervisor - One of the overseers of the Reincarnation Department. He hates Jack and would very much like to be rid of him. But not this way.
SSQA team - A crew of brave and unsung heroes that work day and night to ensure that the cheat-like skills the reincarnated individuals gain are within safety and regulation parameters. SSQA stands for Skill Systems Quality Assurance. Without them, there would be only chaos.
Helen's Family (Currently living in Colchester)
Azelinus - Doting father, spent a small fortune with medicine and treatments for his little winter daughter. She was weak with consumption (tuberculosis) in her early childhood and he feared for her development. Spent another small fortune in tuition fees for teaching his daughter magic.
Hildegard - Helen's mother. Loves children. Has a feet-on-the-ground stance but was worried about the marriability of her daughter. Embraced Beowulf into the bosom of the... family with enthusiasm.
Bertramus - The elder brother of Helen, followed his father in the path of the merchant. A strong warrior and scout. If he were an adventurer, he would be top E-rank.
This story originates from a different website. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.
Bredda - The wife of Bertramus. She married into the merchant life. Is currently pregnant, due next spring.
Baby - There is one coming, and thanks to some magic item crafted by the troll, it has a great chance of being a healthy one.
Mirfield
Cloude - A black-haired lad that once went into the woods with his three recently-graduated adventurer friends but was scared shitless by a troll and fled, leaving behind a girl that froze on the spot. He has a thing for Marcy but she ditched him to flee north with Helen. A hero enthusiast, he wanted to be a spellblade but had zero capacity for magic. He was working as an adventurer when an orc horde raided the city and attempted to take it for themselves. He was in a desperate last-stance attack and was about to be killed when Beowulf rescued him.
Mercy - Marcy's mother and a midwife. She ushered hundreds of inhabitants of Mirfield into the world and is well regarded in the community. Her daughter inherited her feet-on-the-ground stance.
Alvus - The gentle apothecary of Mirfield, usually works at a deficit because he can't stand seeing sick people. Indirectly helped Helen escape prison by down-dosing the mana-draining medicine. Was appointed by Beowulf as mayor after the hero saved the town from the orc horde.
Julius - A brown-haired boy that dreamed of becoming a knight and marrying Helen. But he ditched his crush behind to be eaten by a troll at the first sight of danger. Joined the knight order once he learned Helen was in jail but made no move to even visit her. Was assumed dead during the orc invasion, but there is one unconfirmed sighting in the royal palace when a troll decided to raid the king's monster core stores.
Gruenwald - A grumpy and old grumpy magician that is friends with Azelinus and with a lot of golden incentive decided to take the run down girl as an apprentice. A harsh instructor that values survivability, practicity and versatility over firepower. Thinks ultimate magic spells as useless trinkets that are more dangerous than useful. He railroaded the girl's magical studies and might have left her magically stunted.
Tancred - A D-rank minotaur, is only listed here because there were no entries for monsters and the nearest area was Mirfield. He was a servant of the orc king, but after being defeated by the troll he retreated into the dragon mountains to train himself.
Alvus' nurse - A young and quiet girl that is working in Alvus' clinic. She lost her parents during the orc invasion, but was picked up by Alvus as his apprentice. Has a deep respect and gratitude for the troll because he saved the town and avenged her parents.
Colchester
Kareena - Retired A-rank adventurer and current adventurer's guild master. Was a lover of the Mirfield guild master. She earned the title of {Heartseeker Blade} because of her sure-kill skill that can hit the heart but was forced to retire when the monsters became heartless (literally) or had impossible to reach hearts. She is very bitter because of this and hates 'rising stars' because of that. She tried to harass and stop Beowulf from becoming a full-fledged adventurer and even challenged him to a death duel, but was thoroughly humiliated and maybe awakened her M side.
Yvonne - A bitter woman that was scorned by the Mirfield guild master in favor of Kareena. Works as a receptionist in the Colchester guild and is the right-hand woman of the guild master Kareena. She hates Beowulf because he killed the man before she could bounce back on top.
Imayne - The bespectacled and reserved librarian-type receptionist. Has a great memory for any book she has read. Handles the records and lore of the guild. Can use healing magic. Hates Beowulf because she thought he was promiscuous and a womanizer, but recent events made her reconsider that opinion.
Soren - A squirrel-beastfolk that works as a receptionist and expert dismantler for the guild. She has a 'cards on the table' stance and tries to never hold a bias against anyone. The truth is that she was bullied in beastfolk lands because the squirrel tribe is weaker. Decided to migrate to human lands but was bullied because humans dislike beastfolk (and any non-human race, by the way). Is in search of a way to strengthen her tribe.
Beelzebub - The lord of the bug dungeon that was sealed by the heroic sacrifice of a seraph. Is he still alive after all these millennia?
Borus - A gemstone merchant that befriended Beowulf and was responsible for spreading the news about the treasures of the dungeon among the merchant community.
Heorot Kingdom
King Hrothgar - Crowned a few years ago, he is a naive and idealistic king that dreams of heroes. He met Beowulf and was manipulated to declare him a hero and leave the situation of Mirfield on his hands. The hero vanished and he was left with the bitter mission of finding the troll that raided his treasury. He would like to task Beowulf with finding the troll and bringing him to justice.
The Resistance - Things are not going too well in the west portion of Hrothgar's realm. Things are not going well at all in the east portion of Hrothgar's realm. This underground organization is plotting the downfall of Heorot and the rebirth of a new and cleaner kingdom. Maybe they should begin by bathing themselves at least every other day if they want something clean.
In memoriam
Awolowo and Bernstein - Two otherworlders from Earth that were summoned as heroes by a certain princess to save the world from a certain demon a certain number of millennia ago. The had their fun while doing it and in the end nobody won the war but everyone lost. They were scheduled to earn their own prequel novel but the author put that project on hold: It didn't click.
Guild Master - A man concerned with fulfilling his guild master duties and protecting his community from threats, both real and imaginary. Ruthless in his methods, he is a firm believer that the ends justify the means and the beginnings. Was a lady killer and had several lovers among his subordinates and other female guild masters. Captured Helen and was about to sacrifice her to fertilize the crops on the equinox, but she escaped first. Was killed by Beowulf in a wyvern poison dare game.
Baron Mirfield - A stupid noble that was embezzling taxes from the king. Was executed by Beowulf under the king's orders for his many crimes along with his entire family. They deserved it (according to the laws and customs of the world. Author's opinion differs).
Alisha - A receptionist in the Mirfield guild and one of the Guild Master's lovers. Had a deep hatred for any female the Guild Master set his sights on and mistreated several female adventurers. Was killed by Beowulf because she mistreated Helen when captured (fearing being contaminated by the taboo-breaking) but it was actually most because she was a witness to his transformed status.
Helmholtz and the Shining Blades (Grant, Thibault and the unnamed ADC archer girl) - Recently promoted to B-rank, they were hired by the Guild Master to exterminate a troll threat. They had a pretty nice chance of doing the deed if it were not for the fact that the troll had human intellect and was a bit of a military geek. Instead of trapping the troll they were sent into disarray when Helmholtz was one-shotted by the troll and then were picked one by one. Even then they succeeded in drivng the troll into a corner. The troll frenzied and then devoured the shining blades, the people not the weapons. He did not like the aftertaste.
The Orc King - A B-rank monster that was the top dog of the lands at the foot of dragon mountains. Made a pact with a dragon a long time ago, and used to turn several monsters into his minions to expand his power. Was defeated and killed by the troll during a gourmand travel for the bacon but managed to curse the troll to be very tasty to dragons with his dying breath.
Orc Princes - Was a C-rank hybrid and half-elf. His true name was lost fifty chapters ago (ED: Gronkirion). He led his people into exile after his father summoned a dragon with his dying breath. In search of a nice place, he decided to raid the human settlement after Marcy and Cloude led them in that direction. He was going to win but Beowulf decided to make him a scapegoat to cover for the problems caused by the troll.
Cedric the 'Spear Lord' - The bully that lurked in the adventurer's guild of Colchester and harassed newbies. He got greedy when he saw the spear Beowulf made using the horn of the troll, sent some minions to fetch it and when the minions failed to return he went in to do the deed by himself. He broke the chalice where a certain seraph was sealed on top of him and the troll, dealing deadly damage on both, but the troll can regenerate anyway. His corpse was eaten by mittens after that.
"Rowdy" - The bully that lurked in the adventurer's guild of Mirfield and harassed newbies, but he never met Beowulf. So he settled with bullying Cloude. Died during the Orc invasion. He was reported to be very rowdy.
Imp summoner and his demon squad - They were found and used as entertainment by a certain angel. But demons are to be killed on sight anyway.
Mortimer - A boy that was afflicted with the wasting curse and served as guinea pig for the extreme chytheria gas chamber treatment the troll developed. Things didn't go the way anyone wanted and the boy passed away. The despair over Mortimer's death was the catalyst to erode the last wall of suspicion Zahariel had regarding the troll, and our hero was christened a hero. Now he has the title to boast about. But that won't bring Mortimer back.
