Reckoning

I looked over the battlefield happy about our victory. We had lost 500 which was more than I would have liked. However what filled me with joy was what the wizard was carrying. It seemed like a magic stone. It was the size of a golf ball and glowed a pale white. I tried doing all sorts of things to try to make it do something but nothing happened. I decided to have a hunter bring it to the main nest so it would be safe.

While it was interesting to find a magic item it shouldn't distract me from the war at hand. Or at paw I guess. Being a monster who kills and eats humans is a little weird sometimes. I called all my troops and returned to the biggest of our conquered villages.

We had set up 25 fertilization chambers for hunters and already dozens of eggs were being put into hatcheries. I chose a stone watchtower that haven't been completely destroyed as my new nest. As I was walking there I saw a pile of bodies that was constantly growing.

I felt like throwing up at the amount of blood and gore that had formed a pool around the pile. Instead I walked away trying not to think about the face of a child staring blankly at me.

I walked up the steps and looked around. My children all looked up at me with reverence in their eyes. I didn't deserve it. I had gotten hundreds of their siblings killed for the faint hope of power. I turned away from them and entered my home. Even if I knew I had messed up starting this war I couldn't stop. I would see this through.

After a restless night I got up and ordered all Dagoon hunters and soldiers to me. Julius had been scouting and found a large amount of mountains blocking my advance. He followed them and found a gigantic fortress. He couldn't get a count of the soldiers but there were at least 1000. We weren't ready for that yet.

That had been my conclusion but if we halted our momentum the war would stretch on for years. Julius had also found a few more villages so those would be our next targets. I couldn't bring myself to go so I just had Cate and Julius lead the troops.

As they left I got up and started eating. It was a bad coping mechanism when I was human but when gaining biomass entered the equation it became almost healthy. I had hit 600 biomass a little while ago. I was aiming for 1000. The Dagoon Prince could be our greatest hope.

Edward Brown’s POV

We had managed to make it to Ironhold. However we were not the only ones trying to escape there. Thousands were seeking refuge in the great walled city. We had managed to rent a small home but the cost had been great. I had been allowed to enter only if I joined the army again. An army of 10,000 was being raised. It would be led by the king himself to destroy the new threat.

News wasn't all bad as my wife had given birth to our beautiful son. We named him Ronin after my grandfather. We would raise him away from war and try to guide him to become a scholar.

I just have to survive the war. Then my family will have a happy life for the rest of this kingdom's lifetime. I was knocked out of thought when I heard the morning bell. I had been promoted to captain after telling people of my previous experience.

I got out of my tent and quickly put my equipment on. I walked over to the mustering grounds and stared at the 25 soldiers who were barely older than 16. Girls and boys who thought they could fight monsters. I looked at them and wondered what their parents were thinking. Letting their children fight to the death against monsters that ripped humans apart. I turned away so they couldn't see the fear on my face. Then I turned back to them and started the training.

Cate’s POV

Mother has been acting weird for a while now. She seems less energetic and rarely joins us on hunts. Every time we tell her the death count she just sighs and apologizes. She doesn't understand how we don't care if we die. As long as our death serves to help her succeed.

I tried to focus on the human screaming in front of me but I was kinda bored. I decided to play with it. I stepped on its leg. It screamed even louder and according to the smell had soiled itself. I swatted it away as I looked for something more fun.

Onyx’s POV

I was done with myself. There was no time for depression. My children had been fighting alone for a month. It was time to get up and make sure the enemy died. I had spent the month feeling bad for me and people I was killing. I got up and sauntered out of my nest. I wasn't a good person. I wasn't even a person anymore. So might as well get that power I wanted.

I gathered my 3000 soldiers and looked them over. Mostly hunters and a few soldiers. I looked at them and laughed. This was the scourge that would destroy this world.

I ordered them to fetch me as much food as possible then I feasted. I would reach 1000 biomass then a reckoning would be upon this world. They would learn true fear. As I ate I got a notification.

You are capable of producing a Dagoon Prince would you like to produce 1 for 1000 biomass.

I accepted with glee as I felt the pain take over. When I woke up a small pitch black egg sat next to me. I giggled in delight and ordered Julius to guard it. I trusted he would not lose it. It was time for the final battle. I sent a hunter to tell all the remaining garrisoned hunters and soldiers to come to me. It was time for the massacre to begin.
