Chapter 7: Ice Cream and Rock Toads

Chapter 7: Ice Cream and Rock Toads

Viola and Eks stood at the side of the dirt road. In their hands were a pair of ice cream cones, one cone for each girl. Eks had a chocolate ice cream cone while Viola decided to go with strawberry. Both ice creams included multicolored sprinkles. The bunny girl took a lick of her ice cream, cherishing the flavor. The Ashan Creations brand really was delicious.

“Want a taste of mine?” the red-eyed cat girl tempted with a grin, holding the still mostly uneaten ice cream in from of Viola’s face. The bunny girl’s green eyes followed it as her girlfriend swayed it to and fro. “It’s chocolate!”

“J-Just a quick taste,” Viola stammered before taking a quick lick. Eks’s ice cream tasted delicious as well. The bunny girl smiled, blushing slightly as she savored the flavor.

“My turn! Let me try yours!” Eks exclaimed, motioning to Viola’s cone.

“Here!” The orange-haired bunny girl chirped happily, holding out the ice cream for the cat girl to try. Well, she thought she was holding out the cone, but her hand was empty. “Wait a moment! Where’s my ice cream? What gives?”

“Ribbit!” The sound drew the girls’ attention. Turning her emerald eyes to its source, Viola spied a rock toad. Just sitting there, the toad reached to around her waist in size. Like its name would suggest, its gray hide was rocky. This particular rock toad had its mouth smeared with strawberry ice cream.

“T-That toad ate my ice cream!” Viola cried, almost in tears. “I demand justice!” The bunny girl drew her Stone’s Bane Sword.

“Knock yourself out!” Eks cheered, stifling a giggle. The sight of the ice cream smeared rock toad and the angry bunny girl was rather hilarious. Who knew stopping to get ice cream cones would lead to such an outcome?

The bunny girl swordswoman charged the offending amphibian. With a flash of silver, the thing was defeated. “Well, that was easy,” she stated matter-of-factly, the slain toad belly up.

“Behind you!” Eks warned.

Viola spun around just in time to see a second rock toad bite onto her lower right leg. “I-It has me! I don’t want to be toad chow!” she screamed, shaking her right leg frantically as she squirmed about.

Eks facepalmed at the scene playing out before her. Taking another lick of her chocolate ice cream, she drew her Night Edge Dagger. “You’re fine! Stop squirming around, and hold still for a moment!”

The green-eyed bunny girl froze, tears in the corners of her eyes. “Why is she so calm? Can’t she see a toad is trying to eat me? Wait! Shouldn’t this hurt? Why doesn’t it hurt? I mean, I can feel it, but it doesn’t hurt at all. It didn’t get through the armor, did it? Now I feel kind of silly.”

The blue-haired cat girl calmly stabbed into the back of the toad chomping down on the bunny girl’s leg. The toad gave a bit of a ribbit before falling away. “Better?” she asked.

“Thanks, Eks. Sorry about the freak out.”

“Ribbit!”

“Didn’t I just kill you?!” Eks screeched, repeatedly stabbing her dagger back into the wounded rock toad. It didn’t survive the continued onslaught.

“Uh… Eks… I think it’s dead now… You can stop…”

“Oh! Right!” The cat girl resheathed her dagger, a smile returning to her lips. “Happy to be of assistance.” She was still holding her ice cream cone.

“Why do I feel like we’re forgetting something?” Viola mused.

“Three. There’s supposed to be three toads,” Eks answered, holding up three fingers before returning her attention to her ice cream cone.

“You could help look for it, you know!”

“...but my ice cream will melt,” the red-eyed cat girl cutely pouted.

“Fine! Eat your stupid ice cream then!” Viola seethed before turning her attention back to her surroundings. The toad she defeated was still belly up, so that toad was accounted for. The toad Eks dealt with was just over there. It wasn’t really the kind of sight one wanted to take a close look at. The cat girl really did a number on it. Where, though, was the last toad? Could the quest info have been wrong?

The green-eyed bunny girl brought her right hand above her eyes as she continued to surveil the area. Well, the second toad had gotten the jump on her. She certainly didn’t want the third to bite her other leg or something. “Oh! There it is!” Her vision came to a large boulder that the third toad was sitting on. This toad was particularly large, clearly larger than the other two had been. Its eyes were set dead on her.

“What the…,” Viola yelped, jumping back just in time to avoid a moist volley. “I-It spit at me!” She was beside herself in disbelief. To think it would do that.

Almost as if it was posing, the large toad bulged its muscles. It reared up on its hind legs and promptly started beating its chest. Viola just stared at the ridiculous spectacle in utter shock. Once the amphibian seemed to began gathering saliva in its mouth for a second volley, the bunny girl snapped out of it.

“I’ve had just about enough of this!” she screeched. “I’m turning this thing into barbecue!” She sheathed her Stone’s Bane Sword before gathering flames in her hands. Jutting both hands forward, she launched a double fireball heading right towards the boulder-perched toad.

The toad stopped gathering its spit. First shock and then fear shown in its black eyes as they widened. Looked like it was very much aware of what came next. The attack was a direct hit, engulfing the beast in flames. Then there was nothing, literally nothing. Not even ash remained of the creature.

“M-Maybe I overdid the fireworks a bit,” Viola stuttered, a bit embarrassed at the overkill. “Well, at least I know my fire magic is powerful.”

“Not bad, Vi! Bravo!” Eks congratulated. Her ice cream cone was gone, having been finished while the bunny girl was dealing with the last rock toad. “Want a kiss?” She pulled Viola into a loving embrace that the bunny girl returned. Their lips met, and they shared a not-so-quick kiss. They stared into each others eyes for a moment before separating.

“Should we get the real quest reward now?” Eks asked.

“Yes. Yes we should.”
