Chapter 38: New mechanic

Walking into the Merchant’s Union I am welcomed by an interesting hall. Built from metal, with many screens and lights along with many holograms advertising the latest in walker technology.

...Jesus. The shop I bought Fea from was less advertisement-heavy.

Making my way to the customer terminal I took a moment to scroll through the tabs, to familiarize myself with the system.

After a bit, I got to the “hiring” section of the screen, tagging “long term job”. I began checking through the options.

Most of them demanded exorbitant fees for the repair job. Others I rejected because their CV seemed too arrogant. Nothing is worse than an arrogant engineer, there is no leeway with those people.

…That's why I got along so well with Lee...

...Despite being bipolar he was always eager to help...

After scrolling a while longer. I got an Idea.

I went to the search options and listed them by amount of Merit in the Mechanic’s Union. From lowest Merit to most.

Then I capped the amount of time working to less than 5 months. Essentially  listing the fresh out of education folk.

After scrolling a while, I narrowed my choice down to three fellas.

Melody Tritania

Work experience: none.

Self description: I have done 7 years of study in the Confectura Walker company. I am very good with any kind of repairwork. If you need a repairman, I am your gal. I am also punctual and a hard worker. Looking for a solid day job to sustain my living here in Aurora.

Tommy Hicks

Work experience: part time in a family shop.

Self description: I am an honest worker. I am looking for a job that is solid and safe. My strengths are hydraulics and electronics. I spend most of my days at my family’s shop at XXXX. Am willing for an audit whenever.

John Anderson

Work experience: 1 week tutelage.

Self description: Repairs, adjustments. Hell, working with scrap. I am your guy. Price is negotiable, as are hours. Call me.

So, I looked through further on their CV’s and data. Melody is booksmart, but creative. She might work out quite well.

“Total lack of practical skill.”

Tommy seems like a stereotypical family business kid. Good grades but is often late and a tad forgetful.

This book's true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience.

“Total lack of punctuality.”

John is… Well he is not skilled on paper. But has great on-the-job and practical reviews. The total opposite of Melody. He just might work out as well.

“Total lack of knowledge on engineering.”

...You can be a total downer you know that?

“Thanks Rasmus ^.^”

Despite their lack of experience, and obvious flaws. They are all really good in their respective fields.

For the time being, I tagged all three for an Interview tomorrow. Setting an interview cost 100 creds each btw. T.T

After that was done. I took Alicia home for the day, we had a meal (there was more chocolate in the mail again…), and I let her laze, after which we retired for the night.

I walk among the large crowd in the streets.

As always. The cities are bustling. The multi-floor highways are screeching as they curl around giant glass skyscrapers.

The people seem so content, not knowing what is going on.

...I suppose that is for the best.

“The target is heading into the alley, be ready Tin-boy~”

… I still hate that name. Why did it stick?

“Understood.”

I make my way into the alley after the target.

He turns around to look at me.

“You?”

…”I am sorry Minister Redwood. But you have outlived your usefulness to the TEAR.”

“What?!”

...The target looks around in a baffled manner.

“Impossible! You can’t kill me! I am yo- *Gurgle*”

… Warm redness pours out of his throat.

…Why?… Why are my eyes wet I wonder..?

“Target neutralized.”

The next day, after going through all the motions of morning routine, I took Alicia out for a few hours.

...I tried to ask what would she like to do for fun, but she insisted on the firing range…

“Hmm… So she might not be a lost cause after all~”

...Oh well, to each their own.

After that, we went for a short meal in the local restaurant before heading to the designated location of the audition meetings.

The meetings were set up to occur one after another. So they were all waiting in the hallway.

One was a muscular guy with a buzz-shave,

one was an average build lady with blonde hair,

and one was a short pale skinned kid with glasses.

… The girl left a few minutes after seeing my face, I really am unpopular after all.

… The muscular guy left a few moments after…

...Wow… Today is not good for my self esteem…

“What's your name?” I asked the remaining kid.

“O- Umm.. Tom Hicks Miss- *cough* sir.” He responded,

“... ‘Tom hicks’. You are hired.”

...Due to the total lack of contestants.

*snifle*

*Pov: Tommy Hicks*

...It had been a normal day at the shop, until that job audit.

...I was hired by the Beast.

...They say she *chough’ he is the most frightening of all Commission Hub members. Willing to do whatever atrocity it takes to finish he- HIS! His mission…

Lately though, I heard he was the leader of the legendary “Mobile Fire-squad” that saved our home…

...maybe he is not that bad… just really committed to her task?

...His task*
