Chapter 10: In the Abyss Pt 2

Whilst waiting for her to wake up, I decided to further examine the room, at first I thought it was almost empty, but then I noticed that the part of the wall facing towards the train tracks was not a wall but an inconspicuous gate much like a garage door.

Further examining the room I realized this is an empty Security Drone garage, Old world Security Drones were much like the Walkers, but smaller and clumsier, not to mention less effective because they were built completely without bio-components. A pre-cursor to the Walkers you could say.

Thinking about it I realized that, if this was an empty Drone hangar there would most likely be more nearby, since Security Drones were usually used in numbers. Normally you would have them on Autopilot, but they do have a cockpit.

Realizing that there might be a way out of my current situation, I hurried off to search the vicinity with more care than before.

It did not take long to find what my near-sleepwalking self failed to notice. There was a grand total of 3 more Drone hangars in the vicinity, 2 of which were behind locked security doors and one was empty.

Examining the locked security door to one of the hangars I soon realized they were keycard-locked and would be impossible to open without power even if I had the right card, which I didn’t. Despite this I refused to lose hope, so I began to search the 2 hangars for anything that could serve as a solution.

During my search, Alicia woke up, but instead of making a fuss decided to keep quiet and watch what I was doing instead.

Actually, I hadn’t thought about it before, but how can she see in this dark at all anyways? Asking her about it she mumbled something about getting eye implanted by her captors.

They were probably planning on turning those kids to child soldiers, then I think, surprising really, I had assumed something else, but that is inconsequential.

I shrug away such thoughts as I keep on working.

I return to the security door from before after finding a few unused fusion batteries and collecting some high voltage cables from a broken charging station in one of the hangars.

After connecting the ends of the HV cables to the fusion batteries with some duct tape (Yes, even in this apocalyptic madness you should never leave your home without duct tape!) I used the open ends that I had peeled as makeshift welder.

Not the best tool for the job, but it was enough to slowly eat through the security door.

After finally detaching the door’s bolts I got in.

Inside the garage, a machine twice the height of me stood covered in dust.

A still pristine “Series 15-09-02-Commercial” Security Drone, its arms with wrist mounted rifles and functional hands protruding from its humanoid frame still looking as dangerous as it must have looked decades ago.

But most importantly, it’s cockpit still looked functional from the outside.
