Life 35 - chapter 6 - Bother of Learning

"Matriarch protects us!" Barbara exclaimed as she prayed and bemoaned. "Something happened to Nethe!"

She had just jumped from level 11 to level 24 with a prompt for a branching Path. That doesn't happen without a good reason. Since she did nothing to award FOUR million Exp, the only answer was that Nethe did something huge. The book mimic did say they would go hunt monsters in the lake. She racked her brain as she tried to remember the current Exp tables. Then she remembered she could check them in her interface.

Four million Exp was in the ballpark of an award of a level seventy-something. But Nethe was a baby mimic, level zero. Even if she accounted for the Exp multiplier for defeating something above one's own rank, it would still be a creature above level fifty. How the tiny book managed to kill such a dangerous creature was beyond her understanding. Rather, what was a creature this powerful doing in the city lake? She shuddered. Children went swimming in that lake all the time. It was considered safe but if monsters level fifty were popping up like that, the city would need… But then how would she explain how she knew? And what creature was it?

"Barbara, what's wrong?" Jerrick held her shoulders, their face too close. "Who's Nethe?"

Befuddled, she blinked and stared at the taller boy, barely breathing as she worried. Her mind ran millions of possibilities until she remembered she could communicate telepathically with her familiar.

Silence. She trembled, thinking her familiar was lost.

"Barbara, talk to me," a desperate Jerrick begged.

"Barbara?"

Her shoulders slumped and she met the young man's eyes with an apology on her lips, "Sorry, Jerrick. I have to go back to the dorm."

"But we've just arrived! We haven't tried the games, the kebab cart, shopped for matching souvenirs," the boy clamored as his well-planned date schedule was unraveled by Fate.

"Sorry, we'll come back next month. I know this is important to you, Jerrick, and you put a lot of effort into planning this outing, not to mention getting us the passes. But I have to go back to Nethe."

Now that she seemed to have her wits about her, Jerrick realized how close they were and how the people were looking at the student couple with knowing smirks. Self-conscious, he let go of her shoulders.

"Who's Nethe?" He asked, trying not to sound hurt but failing miserably.

"My familiar," Barbara said in a whisper. "Only Miss Dorlaminn knows about it so far."

Jerrick's lips cracked slightly upward as he noticed the trust she placed in him. His pubescent imagination ran wild and he daydreamed of what could happen should he cultivate this trust. Like the fool most young men his age become when infatuated, he became extremely agreeable.

"Next month then. Let's go back."

Feeling some guilt, Barbara compromised, "I swear I'll make it up to you."

Jerrick misheard what she meant and walked on clouds all the way back to the Academy.

I slipped inside mom's gift… rather, the gift the me who remembered everything left for me. The woven silk cover was marvelous and very comfortable. It had tiny silver corners with gem slivers that held my cover like an embrace. It also had a long padded strap so Barbara could wear me over her shoulder. Steel cable woven with living silk ran inside the strap so it wouldn't be easy to cut. I felt as safe as a book could be inside this cover. Warm by the silk sleeve, I fell asleep.

Something shook me awake. I cracked an eye open in the red faux-silk ribbon poking out between my pages and saw Babara staring at me. She seemed both worried and angry.

"Wake up, Nethe!" She clamored as she picked me up and shook me.

"What happened?" Barbara demanded. "What monster did you fight?"

I knew where this was going and I also knew I couldn't tell Barbara that "mom" was the Matriarch and I was her reincarnation. I would need to play the dumb mimic for a bit longer. Not that I didn't trust her but it was too much of a burden for a girl this young.

Barbara seemed to calm down, a sign she trusted me. I realized why as she glanced at a piece of parchment jammed in the side of the window that I hadn't noticed made the adage, "trust, but verify", climb to the fore of my mind.

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.

"How did you gain that much Exp at once?"

Barbara's eyes swiveled to focus on the huge book on the desk next to me. "Your mom granted you four million Exp."

I could almost feel the gears spinning inside the girl's head. She was wondering how powerful the entity in the book was to grant that much Exp. While four million was pocket change for the previous me, it was a lot for a girl not a year past her System Activation day. Her level more than doubled.

"Who's your mom, Nethe? Should I be worried?"

Her earnest question melted part of the barriers between us.

She rubbed the silk cover. "Nice gift she gave you," Barbara changed the subject. She was smiling and I could tell she would wait for me to come clean.

About a hundred platinum coins plus some assorted currencies. Given how far back these were minted, they were more valuable as antiques than currency.

"That's nice. What are you planning to buy?"

She threw her head back as a crystalline peal of laughter left the young halfling's throat. "We will. I promise."

She narrowed her eyes. "One, it wasn't a date. Two, you cut it too short. I mean, we didn't even eat a proper meal. Poor Jerrick."

We talked until she fell asleep. Then I went back to spend my points.

Nenandil was bored. Fairies usually are timeless and don't count the passage of time like mortals. The elder water fairy, now Sovereign of Ice in fae society, was a bit odd in that regard. All the time she spent with her mortal companion who sometimes played deity instilled in her a wanderlust and a desire to see things change that most fairies would scoff at.

Pandora stirred as the [Wisp of Creation] sensed Divine energies. The fairy put herself on high alert. Moments later, the visitor materialized.

"Loki," she said with the most equitable tone she could muster.

"My Lady Nenandil. The 'water friend'. Greetings," the Asgardian said bowing from the waist. "I hope you don't mind a quick friendly visit."

Summoned by her curiosity as she sensed divine energy, Doris came to Nenandil's chamber. "Who's there, daughter? Oh, welcome, sir."

"Lady Doris, greetings. I'm Loki, god of Trickery and the Old Soul's sponsor," the Norse introduced himself.

Doris glanced at her daughter but then smiled at the newcomer. She could sense his power, a power that eclipsed any deity in this world. "I'm so pleased to finally meet this mysterious benefactor."

"It's my pleasure. I know we are all busy entities so allow me to go straight to the point. I'm here to offer you the chance to restore the green moon."

Nenandil held her breath while Doris squealed.

"Are you sure it's not one of your pranks, O Great Trickster?" Doris jokingly nudged the tall half-giant deity.

"Absolutely sure. But the window of opportunity is closing fast."

Nenandil knew Loki was up to something but the deity was honorable despite all the legends. Loki wouldn't joke with such a delicate subject. "What do you expect in exchange, trickster?" She asked.

"Nothing. This is a gift with no strings attached. Hear me out. The moon was destroyed because the Broodmother drained its Core of all power. One needs to go up there and find said Core and give it a good charge of magical and Divine power. But with the rest of the Pantheon withdrawn in their realms twiddling their thumbs stuck up their arses, it is rather hard to find someone who could do it. You are the last one I could think of, with that Wisp of yours. Now, I'm going to teach you the Divine spells you need to survive up there as well as locate and charge the moon's Core. That would also cause all the Moonstone floating in that ring to coalesce back around the Core and maybe pull some of the fragments that fell on the planet too.

"The moon will be smaller because a few fragments flew away from the planet's gravitational pull and most of what fell on the planet won't come back but it can be rebuilt. The Wisp obeys you."

Nenandil seemed to be focused on analyzing every word from the deity. When she finally spoke, she had him figured out. "This is not a gift, neither free. You want me away from the world. Why?"

Loki wasn't dismayed by having been called on his trickery. If anything, he seemed deeply amused. The Asgardian hated stupid morons more than anything, his brutish brother Thor filling the shoes some of the time.

"You got me," he gushed. "My motives aren't free, however."

"It's about her, isn't it?" Nenandil almost choked as she addressed the core of the issue. When Loki remained silent, her heart sank an inch inside her tiny chest. "Where is she?"

"Living her life with her Fate-bonded spouse's most recent incarnation. Interfering now will jeopardize what seems like a successful love story. The pressure will drive them apart. Do you want that?"

Now it was Nenandil's turn to remain silent. She closed her eyes but the tears still rolled down her cheeks. Doris hugged the head of her daughter.

"Is she happy?" Nenandil asked after a while.

"She's aware of the curse and working really hard to get rid of it. I'm impressed at her resilience even despite the disconnection with her memories. I'm helping from afar, Nenandil. In due time, earlier than expected, she'll break it and come back, stronger than ever. Have patience."

The fairy grabbed the sides of her mother's dress and wept. But she knew she had to accept the Asgardian's offer. The green moon was that important to the world and to the fairies more than any. Before she knew it, the fairy had already quoted a cartoon the Old Soul watched about a grandfather and his grandson's crazy adventures.

"You son of a bitch, I'm in." [1]

Perhaps the Old Soul rubbed on her more than she would ever admit.

"Are you sure you won't fall from it?" Barbara asked as she looked at herself in the mirror. I was strapped along her shoulder like a messenger's bag.

I deadpanned.

She smiled at me. "Then let's go to class."

"But that's expensive! A training room costs seventy-five silver a day!" She protested. Students usually formed groups of twenty-five to rent one. It still came out as expensive since one could live for a week in a good inn for three silver.

They left the room and went downstairs so Barbara could have breakfast. With the Perks I unlocked, I rarely needed nourishment anymore.

"I'm not letting you stay in the library anymore," she snickered.

"Nethe!" Barbara protested. "Jerrick is just a friend."

She sniggered but said nothing as we reached the dorm cafeteria. Barbara inhaled her breakfast and ran to the classroom suffering nasty heartburn from eating too fast. She was almost tardy.

After another casting session where I had to cheat on her stead so Mr. Collins didn't strike us out of the delving group, we went to the library. After donating some Bibliomimic adhesive to the eager [Librarian], she gave us the key token to the training room. It was a wooden board with glyphs and a faint enchantment engraved on it. Mom could make one in her sleep.

The big advantage of the training room was the wards in place to keep our magic from leaking or harming us along with privacy protections. Very often, casting mishaps by eager apprentices caused wardrobe malfunctions. For that reason, a spare uniform was available in the dressing room if anyone needed to borrow one.

Barbara placed her hand on the enchanted orb on the control plinth and injected her magic. That would attune the protective wards to her signature and dissipate her magic harmlessly using resonance.

As the wards hummed around us, I addressed the elephant in the room.

"I love the idea. It's unique and very powerful." She daydreamed.

With a mix of surprise, shame, and outrage, she opened her mouth but no sound escaped it. As she shut it and clattered her teeth, Barbara protested, "Nethe! That's rude!"

Yup. She was not bad at it but slow. The diagram image just didn't translate from her mind to the air in front of her. She drew like a snail would. At the end of the hour, she slumped.

"You are worse than Mr. Collins," Barbara whined. "Hey, I gained five points of Proficiency!"

With [Mental Mastery] giving [Leadership] 84 bonus points through {Technical Mastery}, Barbara was learning stuff 304% faster. 101% from {Project Leader} and another 101% from {Instructor}.

Before Barbara could either give up or break down, I shifted my stance.

She took a small Core sliver with a {Force Javelin} spell engraved on it. Last night, I suppressed the curse and granted my mom… my real self an hour of free reign to do whatever the other me wanted. I don't remember anything because when the curse comes back it takes away that hour of memories. Fortunately, I had the presence of mind to write a short note on myself.

> > After I visited the vault and erased any trace of the intruders who took the book out of it, I went to visit some fairy friends of mine and crafted a few teaching aids for Barbara. Unlock [Leadership] and help her. Remember, she's very important to us.

The last part went without saying, but it was good to know my full self agreed with me.

She missed her breathing rhythm and did the love child of a sob, a hiccup, and a sigh, "Nethe!"

She looked at the red crystal engraved with a small spell circle. Then picked me up from where I was hanging and stared at the tiny eye on the inside of my spine, just above my pages' binding. "Nethe, who is your mother?"

"I don't have that much MP," she complained.

It took her some time to find the proper mental state to tap into my MP pool. Then she needed to extend a tendril of magic into the shard and empower the diagram. The first {Force Javelin} shot wildly, hitting the training barrier and dissipating as the barrier resonated with her magical signature.

I snickered.

"Har, har," she shook her head with self-derision. "It was… wild.

This time she knew what to expect, and kept her arm steady. The Force projectile impacted with the target area but at the edge. Barbara squealed. I couldn't see her Status but I knew she hadn't unlocked the Perk yet.

.

I put her through several exercises and chewed on an MP recovery pill mom left for me to let her keep casting. During the training, I tried to figure out what was holding her back during Mr. Collins' lessons. I could see the fully-formed diagram popping into existence at once in the space in front of her, then she would cast from the sliver. But whenever I asked her to draw the diagram, she slowed to a crawl.

"I think I got it!" She was worn out but still had a satisfied grin on her face who reluctantly clung to that baby fat as most pubescent teens did.

With my teaching bonus and the sliver's enchantment, she was growing by leaps and bounds. Splitting the MP stream was hard but she pulled it off even though the twin javelins wobbled and flew in an uncontrolled spiral pattern just to crash against one another before even hitting the barrier.

She was a capable caster for her level. The problem was that Barbara sucked at diagram realization. She could summon the full diagram from the imprint in the sliver and she even cast the spell from the diagram she created instead of using the one on the crystal shard. But whenever she needed to think of the individual components and trace them, she lost her way.

I was thankful that potion toxicity was almost a non-issue for me, especially with mom's purified pills. Barbara collapsed on her knees and then sat on her heels as she panted. Her robe was tossed on the stone floor a meter away and her white shirt was soaked in sweat.

"Last charge on the shard," she remarked.

I cheered on her.

Without standing up, she fired the spell and fried the shard, causing it to crumble into glittering dust. Her arm slumped by her side and she had to use all her focus to breathe.

I conjured a mass of cold dry air and blew a refreshing breeze on her. She shivered and then melted. Her auburn hair was stuck to her face and the wind helped hide her entire face.

"What time is it? I'm starving."

"Wasn't I the one supposed to spoil you? I'm the master and you're the familiar."

"Sounds like a deal."

* Crystallomancy (ultra-rare): You can cast spells from diagrams engraved on crystals, gemstones, or Core shards. Reduce MP costs by 25%. Each use drains the crystal's power, damaging it.

* Dual Casting (rare): You can cast two spells at once from different sources. You lose 100 points of Proficiency if they are different spells and only 50 if they are the same.

She squealed loudly and then broke into a fit of giggles. "Nethe! We did it! I unlocked two new Perks! And one of them {Crystallomancy}!"

That's the System. Display the barebones aptitude for the craft, and it will guide you along the way.

She did. Barbara was so happy tears rolled down her face, joining the quick-drying sweat. She needed a good bath and a fresh change of clothes if she was to rejoin civilized society.
