Life 26 - Chapter 34 B - Intermission: The Second Age

Every single person connected to the System saw the message. As if it was asleep, the world awoke. The winds of change blew and sung of opportunity and ruin.

> Rejoice, people of Yznarian!

>

> Bundeus the Fool, the perpetrator of the Age of Eclipse, has perished.

>

> Humans no longer have a patron deity.

>

> BY Galbarar's Plentiful Grace, the Sun now shall shine for three hours every day.

High Queen Sariandi stared at the notification for a long time. It was something long overdue. Ever since that one-armed human girl came into Fulgen, her fate and the human God's were intertwined. Worse, the most problematic species on the whole planet was now without a patron. The first era of the world, called the "Ascension of Humans" was over. This "Age of Eclipse" was merely a transition. A short night between two days.

She gave orders to start the calendar anew. This was the year one of the second era. The name was not her problem. Someone else would look back at the events and decide on something. The humans would diminish in power and numbers now. Their ridiculous advantage of picking any Perk they wanted would come to an end or have greatly reduced effects. That's why they were so adamant in bringing Alloralla back to life. The elves worshipped Yznera but she wasn't the "Goddess of Elves". Instead, they took their advantages of the covenant with the elder fairies. It is not just to bless Fulgen. It was a blessing for the entire species.

Princess Solana was on her bed. She closed her eyes but the message was still there. They played with death itself. She could never shake the feeling that the lamia Princess was playing with them. She was a Princess, she had that much power, and yet behaved like a commoner most of the time. She couldn't understand. With the power over life and death and the ability to kill Gods, the world would bow to her, should she only demand their allegiance. But no. She was content with getting dirty and doing nonsensical things like releasing slaves. Why? Why bother with insignificant people? What vision-guided Lakerta that Solana couldn't glimpse at?

Auvani stood. The King sat on his throne, singing praises to the Great White One. He was a changed man after his death. Maybe it was a given, maybe it was just the way people behaved after crossing the veil of death back and forth.

Solana couldn't understand. Her fears clouded her mind.

In Rerin's Royal Theater, Reynoyonyn, the "Poet of Torment" sat on his dressing room in front of a mirror. He too remembered the one-armed girl. The fire in her eyes. The unspoken pain and loss. Eyes without innocence but yet pure. A heart overtaken by grief and yet harboring hope. How was she now? What would she do, now that her goal was reached, centuries later? What new pain and loss did she endure to become someone able to kill a God?

Queen Sariandi told him through a messenger bird.

> "Go to Windemere. There you'll find your friend."

He was close. Two weeks on a carriage and Renyn would reach Windemere. He should look for her. Lily, that stubborn little girl. She finally avenged her mother.

The Vassal Kingdom of Theirian, The Great Pekothas Empire. A brownie swept his living room in a tree's hollow. He stopped to read the message. His gaze went from the notification to the stack of letters he received. The tanned head beamed a wide smile.

"Aye, that wis th' lassie ah knew. Aye fightin' fur guid. Ne'er giein' up. Mibbie ah shuid prepare tae spawn anither yin. Ah micht git jammy again."

Neep was a simple fairy. A clean and organized house was all he cared about. Leave those complicated politics to the big folk, always worried, always busy. He hummed a tune as his broom gently raked the tree trunk.

Darkness. Deep underneath the earth, a cult gathered.

"Brothers. One of the gatekeepers has perished. The veil has weakened," the cult leader announced.

"Is it time? To usher our Lord into this world?" One of the cultists eagerly asked.

"No. Not yet. The hateful [Silver Slayer] is at the height of her power. We must wait for the right time. Meanwhile, let us summon more heralds."

The leader grinned under his hood. "Bring the sacrifices."

Asgard. Loki read yet another myth about him and sighed. "Mortals, mortals. So imaginative, yet so dumb!"

He had a book on Nordic Mythology, of all things, on his lap.

"Why would I writhe under a snake and cause earthquakes? Am I not a shapeshifter? Isn't it a trivial matter to wriggle out of such restraints? And why would a snake drool venom forever, of all things? They inject their venom! Don't they know that basic fact? And what did the snake eat? And why the hell would Sigyn hold a bowl to catch the venom when she could just put up a gutter to drain it away and be done with it?"

He laughed at the story and tossed the book in the hearth.

"And how is my little envoy? Enjoying the laurels of god-slaying? Is it time we have quote-unquote the talk?"

----------------------------------------

Thirteen Yznarian years later...

The teenage boy stretched. Before him, vast farmland at the ends of the Scorched Continent. A barrier of tall cliffs separated the farm he grew up in from the horrors lying beyond, on the half of the continent devastated by the Second Demon Lord.

But he cared not for the monsters. He just got the message all teenage boys yearned to once see.

> Selecting a Class is the most important step in your life (...)

The youth grinned as he dismissed the windows. The prompt remained. It was worth it to have a contingency plan. As if that Anomaly would be the only one that could cheat death. He canceled the selection. Now it was not the time to pick a Class. His mother showed up at the window.

"Bundi! Go call your father for lunch!"
