Chapter 43 - Hard Convictions

Chapter 43 - Hard Convictions

“AHHHHHHH!” A monstrous Rank-B Field Monster that was as virulent as a scorpion was chasing after Hard Steel and Rooster with vehement rage. It chased them over many scorching dunes until they arrived at an area where an abandoned ruin lay. It was covered in dust particles along with ancient webs.

“Quickly! Probably we can lose it in there!” Rooster followed Hard Steel’s command. Both Tomb Riders rushed into the abandoned ruins as quickly as they could.

Whoosh!

Reaching inside the abandoned ruins, they directed their motors behind a large fallen frame while they hid in the opposite direction, now they were on foot and were less likely to be noticed by the terrifying scorpion monster. Confirming their safety, both Rooster and Hard Steel connected with their motor’s network from a distance, in addition, they transformed their vehicle back into their initial state which was a Motors Cube and called them over to their current location. Also, Hard Steel made sure he hid the Grace of Pinnacles among some broken down relics that resembled statues.

Right after the Tomb Riders reclaimed their motors, the scorpion monster finally arrived at the entrance of the abandoned ruins. It began shifting its sights around the area until it saw tyre tracks below and commenced following their trail.

“Now is our chance to make our escape while it is distracted.” Said Rooster. He wanted to rid himself of the scorpion’s scented trail for good.

Hard Steel grabbed onto Rooster’s arm which prevented him from leaving. “Wait we can’t go just yet.”

“Why not?”

“For one, we wouldn’t get too far before it catches on to our scent again. We need to find a way to reap that monster’s Ghoul Soul or else it will continue to chase us all the way over this desert.”

“What do you suggest?”

“I don’t know but we need to meet back up with the others soon and I don’t plan on carrying this scorpion along.” Hard Steel poked his head out from where he was hiding and observed the scorpion’s movements. “It’s following the trail that we left for it. Before it realizes that it was a hoax we need to find a way to take its head.”

“Do you think that there might be a Soul Insignia nearby?” Rooster along with Hard Steel have been searching all over the desert for a Soul Insignia but they have yet to come across any.

“I’m not entirely sure but it’s worth searching for. Come on, let’s go deeper and see if we can find anything.” While the scorpion was busy sniffing out their trail, Hard Steel went further into the ruins with Rooster at his side.

After venturing further inside the abandoned ruins, Rooster remembered that they had left something behind. He turned to Hard Steel and asked: “What about the artefact? Are we just going to leave it behind?”

“It’s safe where it is for now. The artefact has no value to the monster, it only wants to skewer our fleshes. Besides, it wouldn’t fit through these narrow gaps.” Finished listening to Hard Steel’s reasoning, Rooster dropped his doubts about leaving their precious artefact behind.

“What is this place anyway?” The Tomb Riders were walking through a dusty enclose space which was overpopulated with innumerable webs sprang from the abdomens of decorative spiders. They ventured over a collapse concrete ceiling which led them to a higher floor in the ruins.

“Hey, little help here.” Hard Steel stretched out his arm for Rooster to grasp it.

“I got you buddy.” Rooster helped Hard Steel up to find his balance onto the raised platform. From there they looked around until their eyes came across a faint glow within the darkened area.

“I see some light over there.”

“Let’s go check it out.” The venturesome Tomb Riders motioned their bodies towards the glowing light which was calling out to them. When they got near to the mystical area, they suddenly started feeling some fearsome vibrations.

Rumble!

The abandoned ruins began experiencing a seismic magnitude. Everything was trembling, some fallen debris almost crush Rooster’s hand.

“What the hell is happening all of a sudden?” Rooster was panicking like rats, Hard Steel was no exception either.

“I think that scorpion is trying to bury us in here.”

Boom!

“There it goes again! We better get out of here before it succeeded!” Rooster began backtracking his steps towards the exit of the crumbling ruins.

“Wait! We’re this close. Don’t you want to see what’s behind here?” Hard Steel gestured to the glowing area that was in front of them. Rooster hesitated for a second before agreeing.

“Alright, but we have to make this quick. That creature seems to be getting really hostile.”

“Give me a hand.” Rooster helped Hard Steel pulled away some concrete obstacles that were blocking the path to the glowing area.

“That’s the last one.” On Hard Steel’s command, both he and Rooster ventured into the glowing ambience.

“It’s so bright in here.” After adjusting their naked eyes to the brightness. The Tomb Riders could now see the source of the intense illumination. They were in awe when the vague become apparent.

“Am I seeing this correctly?” Rooster rubbed his eyes for reassurance. “If so then this is a golden find.”

“A golden find indeed.” Hard Steel went closer to the glowing object. “This is my first time seeing one in person. I can’t believe that we’ve actually located a Golden Soul Insignia!” Hard Steel’s’ voice was filled with excitement, he even forgot about the ruin that was collapsing over their heads.

Boom!

Hearing the loud vibrations again, reminded them that they were in danger.

“Come on! We have to get out of here quickly. Take it and let’s bail!” Rooster began rushing Hard Steel who was taking his sweet time admiring the Golden Soul Insignia.

“I-I don’t think that I’m worthy enough to wield such golden splendour. Just look at it radiating.” Hard Steel was lost in a trance. He no longer had any sense of danger.

“For god sakes! It’s just a Soul Insignia!” Rooster got fed up by Hard Steel lingering around like he was on a date. He pushed Hard Steel out of the way and pushed forward his Motors Cube towards the Golden Soul Insignia.

The golden splendour within the ruins was getting sucked into Rooster’s Motors Cube. Moments later, the inner parts of the ruins became pitch-black. (Where is Riddick when you need him?)

“Come on! Let’s get the hell out of here before we are buried alive!” Rooster grabbed Hard Steel’s hand, moreover, he tossed him around his shoulder and began dashing his way towards the exit. Even though their surroundings were filled with obstacles and darkness, Rooster managed to find his way to the exit.

“We’re finally out!” Saying this, Rooster placed Hard Steel on the ground and began panting like a tired dog.

“Goddammit! We were almost buried alive. Let’s retrieve the artefact and get the hell out of…” During this conversation with Rooster, Hard Steel realized that they weren’t alone. “Who…?” Glancing around, he saw a group of unruly Tomb Riders battling against the scorpion monster.

“So these bunch of Tomb Rider were the ones who set off the monster on a rampage.” Hard Steel continued to watch the large scorpion and the Tomb Riders duelling it out.

“Ahf! Ahf!”Finished catching his breath, Rooster came up beside Hard Steel and was slightly taken aback when he spotted a familiar rival Tomb Rider making his way toward their Grace of Pinnacles.

“What? It’s that asshole again!” Rooster pointed out the leader of the group of Tomb Riders. He was the same guy who was dissing Rooster’s mother back in the Ghoul Stadium. “I won’t let that piece of shit steal our artefact!” Rooster dashed off into the fray.

“Rooster wait up!” Hard Steel tried stopping him but he was too late. “Goddammit!” He cursed out loudly before following behind his friend.
