Harpah snorted haughtily. “She’s no Miss, and she only wishes I could stoop low enough to reach her level enough to feud with her. She even stole my best friend the other day. I saw Mitchell talking to her when I went back for my racket after school.” She complained.
I knew better than to reason with Lanthe's daughter so I changed the direction of the conversation again. “Well, I was considering enrolling Adrian and Elena at the school while they are here, maybe they could be your friends.” I was happy to see her perk up at the mention of my kids. They had gotten along when we'd all went out together and I really wanted them to have a relationship together. I had distanced myself from my family because of my own personal reasons but I wanted my kids to have the best of everything, and the Hyades happened to be the best family one could ever have.
“Well…, I do like your daughter. She's very sweet and she looks like me so she will need my protection and guidance to stave away the attention of these boys who cannot see beauty like ours and simply walk away,” I choked at the last bit and heard Lanthe let out a small snort in return, but Harpah continued unperturbed, “I'm not so sure about your son though. He seemed like a little smart Alec to me.” She commented, her lip curling a little when she said the last part. I smothered another grin. While Elena had been sweet and friendly towards Harpah, even managing to melt the ice in the little diva's heart, Adrian hadn’t appreciated Harp's slightly snobbish behavior and had made his opinion very known. Harpah could not begin to imagine how anyone wouldn't be fawning over her good looks and wit, so I sensed another rivalry on the horizon.
“Hmm. How about you give him another chance, hey? For me.” I asked her because I was done stalling and I had to talk it out with Lanthe sooner rather than later so we could all move on without the tension. Harpah seemed a bit skeptical, but before I could convince her, Lanthe spoke up for the first time since I walked in.
“Honey, go over to the cottage and invite Aleks and the kids over for lunch, if they want to. Tell them they can come over in an hour.” Harpah shrugged and got up with no fuss, grabbed her iPad, and shuffled out of the kitchen, leaving me alone with Lanthe. Before she could tear into me, Jason was back and telling me to follow him into his lounge, much to Lanthe's annoyance.

“You'll talk to him after I do. We discussed this.” He said, his tone firm as he went around the counter and kissed her gently on the mouth, eliminating her scowl. After a few whispered words and another kiss, Jason led me away from my mother's glare, and into his haven.

Atlas and I were three years old and Amethyste was but a few months old when we moved from the dark and cold fortress we had once called home and into what was then dubbed, ‘The floating palace.’ Not that people were comfortable enough to say it to our faces back then, people were still wary of the new Alpha who was killing all of their oppressive traditions and promising them things they had never even thought to dream of; promising them a life where people weren’t born as slaves, where wealthy man didn’t do as they wished despite the fact that the kingdom was ruled by a tyrannical woman. Everyone had known of Jason’s existence of course, but back then, back when Abattohn was not a town where people had equal rights or safe homes; when people were born into money or poverty and died the same, it was a crime punishable by death to actually see the son of the queen; the apple of her evil eyes, Jason. So when he took over the rule of Abattohn, everyone was understandably wary. It had taken a lot of time and development before they could all walk down the streets without wide looks of fear and suspicion thrown our ways.Atlas and I were three years old and Amethyste was but a few months old when we moved from the dark and cold fortress we had once called home and into what was then dubbed, ‘The floating palace.’ Not that people were comfortable enough to say it to our faces back then, people were still wary of the new Alpha who was killing all of their oppressive traditions and promising them things they had never even thought to dream of; promising them a life where people weren’t born as slaves, where wealthy man didn’t do as they wished despite the fact that the kingdom was ruled by a tyrannical woman.
