141. Glowgo splice sorbet

Kit opened the freezer door with bated breath. He couldn’t wait to see if his run of luck was going to continue. He pulled out the container containing the Glowgo sorbet. Frost clung to the outside of the container and water vapor spread out from the cold box.

The cold against the container made his hands start to feel numb. The chill didn’t stop Kit from ripping off the lid of the container, the numbness in his fingers made his motions jerky. When the lid finally came free, green glowing sorbet met his gaze, a blue hue was frantically swirling inside.

As the water vapor started to rise off the frozen liquid the blue hue started to reach a peak. Kit quickly placed two large scoops into a bowl, then held his breath and mentally crossed his fingers.

[Congratulations, you are now Level 48 Chef]

AHHH! Today really was crazy lucky! Kit felt like he was floating on air, so far everything he turned a to hand worked out. He couldn’t wipe the grin off his face even if he wanted to. His cheeks were starting to hurt from how much he smiled today.

Another skill unlocked! Plus another chef level gained! He quickly read the notifications from the bottom to the top.

Two more levels and he could put the Glowgo splice sorbet and the Lucky sticky apple cider on his menu. Hopeful with his chef level reaching 50 he could get rid of the side effects from those two recipes!

Glee filled him with the thought of adding more luck as he experimented with the new ingredients. Being able to consume the apple cider and candy apples would send his luck sky high! He had a feeling he would need it when he started working with the ingredients from the Piabbits domain.

Chicken and eggs started floating around in his head. He couldn’t wait to start experimenting with those arrogant chickens! Then blue vegetables replaced the chickens, and his excitement grew even further.

With hands shaking from excitement, he placed the lid back on the sorbet container, then took it back to the freezer. He then finally went over the information of his latest creation. He now created two items that could replenish magica. It would be great if he could find some disposable takeaway containers that could prolong the duration of keeping his meals fresh.

If he could find or get someone to create this, then his meals would become even more popular. He felt prolonging the freshness of items on his menu would become integral to reaching financial stability for his restaurant. He made a mental note to discuss this with Snickers.

He returned to the bowl of green sorbet and called Crackers over. It was time to taste the sorbet! Both scooped some sorbet onto a spoon and brought it to their lips.

A smooth creamy tangy coldness made his tongue tingle with delight. Before he noticed what he had done a clanging entered his ears when he scaped the bottom of an empty bowl with his spoon. He had been so engrossed in the wonderful taste he hadn’t even realised he had finished.

Kit looked longingly at the freezer but stopped himself from making another bowl. He still had to go and taste the possum stew! Kit jumped in fright at that thought. He had completely forgotten about the stew cooking on the fire pit!

With hasty steps he fled over to see what condition his stew was in. Thankfully it didn’t look burnt, he gave the thick stew a stir and the hearty herbal fragrance filled his nose. He took out another spoon and tasted the flavour.

He could automatically tell that something was missing from the taste. He peered into the bubbling pot and was surprised that there was a faint blue hue swirling inside. A happy squeak left his mouth, Crackers came over and peered into the possum stew. “Oh, Kit is it goin to be another success?”

Kit glanced up at his employee to reply then froze. Laughter burst from his mouth as he stared at Crackers, her skin was glowing with a weird green flush. Crackers looked anxious at Kit’s reaction to her query. Kit quickly explained his reaction before Crackers became upset.

The story has been illicitly taken; should you find it on Amazon, report the infringement.

He struggled to get his words out around his laughter. “Sorry for laughing Crackers, you seem to be suffering from the Glowgo splice sorbets side effects.” Crackers blinked slowly then looked down at her body a gasp of fright left her lips.

“Kit what be happenin to me?” She brought her hands closer to her face for inspection. “Am I poisoned?” Kit couldn’t help letting out another burst of laughter, she looked so funny as a green person.

He quickly apologised once again, then explained the side effects of the Glowgo sorbet. “Oh, so I just be green for a bit. That be a relief!” Crackers gazed at her hands once again but this time it was with curiosity.

A smile grew on her lips the longer she looked at her hands. “It would be great if it changed me hair colour instead of me skin. If it be doing that it would be a good seller with the girls.”

Kit looked at Crackers glowing skin and had to agree with her, his sister was a prime example of someone who liked to change their hair colour all the time. It was a pity that he couldn’t tweak the side effects of the Glowgo sorbet to implement changing just the hair.

There was no point dwelling on things that where impossible to achieve, Kit returned his focus back to the possum stew. The faint blue hue in the pot made Kit frown, he wasn’t confident that his first try was going to pass the requirements for a stats meal.

“Crackers I don’t think this batch of possum stew is going to work out.” He answered Crackers previous question with a sigh, it looked like his run of luck had come to a stop for the day. “Here taste this and tell me what you think is missing.”

Kit handed a spoon to Crackers and watched her bring some stew to her mouth. Steam rose from the hot liquid, Crackers blew the stew on the metal spoon with her breath. After she tasted the possum stew her brows pulled together. “Hmm, it really be missing something.”

Crackers became thoughtful, then hurried over to the storage facility, she returned with a couple of small dried leaves.

“I be thinkin this might help.” She handed the green leaves over to Kit. He brought it to his nose and sniffed. The familiar sent of bay leaf tickled his nostrils, he quickly threw the leaves inside and stirred the mix and watched how the blue swirl developed.

The swirling spread further through the stew but didn’t cover the whole inside of the pot. Kit clicked his tongue in annoyance, then sighed. He’d been spoilt today with getting things right on the first try, he guessed his run really couldn’t last forever.

He decided to leave the stew to finish cooking, then he could decide what to do after tasting the final result. As he was thinking about what to do while he waited, Grandpa and Twix walked through the door.

“Kit my boy, were you trying to make me die of a heart attack! When I saw those little blue demons, my heart was pounding rapidly until I realised that they were with Snowball. You need to give this old man some warning if you send creatures like those to me.” Grandpa was patting his chest as if emphasising his fright.

“Sorry Grandpa, it was the only way I could think of contacting you and Twix.” He turned sincere eyes to the old man. “I will make it up to you by letting you sample the new dishes I’ve made today!” Kit knew Grandpa was a foodie and he had a good chance of being forgiven immediately by tempting him with new flavours.

Grandpa whole demure changed after hearing Kit’s words. An excited flush swept over the old man and he was practically bouncing on the spot. “It’s fine, this old man can take a shock or two.” Grandpa was making a waving motion with his hand as he spoke as if dismissing his earlier complaints with a flick of his wrist.

“Come my boy show this old Grandpa what you have made.” The old man started to rub his hands together in anticipation.

As Kit was about to answer Twix nudged the old man to the side so he could enter the door that Grandpa had been blocking. “Ahh Kit don’t forget about me, I want to taste the food too!” A bubble of laughter floated out of Kits mouth, those two really were related.

“I’ll get you a sampling of the recipes ready, while you’re waiting can you please make me a few clay pots big enough to fit these inside.” Kit pulled the bear ribs from his pouch and motioned towards them.

Two pairs of greedy eyes stuck to the seasoned ribs. “Twix, lets go!” Grandpa pulled Twix out the door without looking back. Kit could guess what was going through the old man’s head. The faster he made a clay pot for Kit the faster he could try the new dishes.

Crackers started to laugh next to him. “They really be likin ya food Kit.” Kit gave Crackers a knowing smile, he then returned his gaze to the possum stew.

“Crackers, I’m going to finish preparing the bear ribs, do you want to experiment with the possum stew or help me with the ribs?”

“Ya be trustin me to test different flavours?” Crackers gazed at Kit in wonder, then her brows pulled into a frown. “Kit what happens if I be making it into a stats meal when ya be busy with something else. I be stealing a recipe from ya then.”

Kit became amused with Crackers words, “If you make it into a stats dish that would be fantastic, we will have another meal for the menu.” Kit made sure to capture Crackers gaze before he continued to speak. “Crackers it wouldn’t be stealing a recipe if you are the one to find the right combination to make a stats meal out of the ingredients.”

He wasn’t arrogant enough to think he was the only one who could make a stats meal. Plus, the more they could create the better it would be for the restaurant. He really viewed his employees as family, so he was happy to promote their own joy at making a stats meal, even if that meant losing out on a recipe for himself.

That didn’t mean he would give things away for free though. If Crackers was the one to put in the effort needed to find the right combination, then he would be happy for the recipe to belong to her.

“Crackers not all the meals on the menu need to be made by me, if you succeed then we can make a contract so that your stats meal can be sold in the restaurant.” He didn’t want to deter his employees from experimenting on their own creations.

Crackers reaction was different to what he thought it would be. She angrily put her hands on her hips and started to poke a finger at him. “Kit ya be listenin to me. That not be ok, ya came up with the combination of ingredients, I only be coming in at the end. That be stealing in my book!”

Crackers clicked her tongue in annoyance. “Kit ya be a bit to givin sometimes. Ya needs to be a bit more selfish. It is no wonder we all be worried about ya.” Crackers thinned her eyes as she stared at him. “You don’t be worrying about me creating anything. I be happy just to be included in the process.”

It looked like they both wanted the best for each other. Kit felt a warmth spread in his chest, this was what family was supposed to feel like. In the real world, Kat was the only one to give him this kind of affection.

Kit cleared his throat that had clogged up with emotion. “Ok I will listen to you Crackers. Then if you get close to being finished you call me over.” Kit made plans to get Crackers to experiment with some ingredients without him being involved. Then she wouldn’t feel like she was stealing from him.

With both happy at the outcome of the conversation they got back to work in the kitchen.
