chapter 31 : Sophie's a badass

After adjusting the holographic screen's point of view, I was now watching Sophie. She was clad in armor made of Pitch Black darkness and shadows. The fight had already started, and she clearly wasn't actively participating. Her shadow extended out, engulfing the enemies. They seemed concerned by the shadow slowly enveloping them. There was a pitch-black vortex of darkness a kilometer in the sky. The soldiers who got sucked into it were emerging from the pitch-black vortex of darkness a kilometer up. Normally, it would be impossible to do that with spatial magic, which is extremely difficult to use due to the complex calculations needed. You can cheat with the blink spell by essentially linking your current coordinates with the coordinates you're looking at, but it only works for short range and can only teleport the caster.

However, shadow magic and space magic have a good affinity. For example, normally, if you wanted to teleport an entire house, you could do that with spatial magic, but you'd also teleport everything inside the house. With shadow magic, you could simply engulf that house in your shadow and teleport just the house, leaving everything else inside it where it was. Of course, shadow teleportation enables one to transport things to anywhere where there are shadows. The larger distance more mana it costs, but you could enter one shadow and reappear at any other shadow in the world. I suppose you could even jump planets if you had enough mana, and you don't need to do complex calculations. However, the spell's weakness is it's not as effective at night since it requires shadows. Shadow magic, is similar to dark magic, involves manipulating shadows, while dark magic involves manipulating darkness but also involves curses. All curses have some level of dark magic. By combining the two, she was able to pull off that stunt, since quite literally any dark space can be considered a shadow by mixing her dark magic in with her shadow magic. As such, she's actually more powerful during the night, unlike the majority of space and shadow affinity users who lose their teleportation abilities at night. It's not that there aren't any shadows at night; it's just that it greatly restricts the areas like to citys where there would be illumination to create shadows. A black vortex manifests itself behind Sophie; this is naturally a spell I suggested, the classic Gate of Babylon. Well, this version is a little different since the gate is quite literally a black vortex that resembles a black hole, but unlike a black hole, which has intense gravity that sucks in everything, this is just a spiraling vortex of absolute darkness. Naturally, swords begin firing out of the black vortex, swords made of solidified darkness and shadow and have the aimbot spell added to them, the sword meticulously hunting down their targets. The only way to defend against the spell is to either block the swords with a magical barrier or blast the swords with an attack to destroy them. The swords begin mowing down enemies, swiftly and mercilessly impaling them. Since these weak F-rank soldiers lack any defensive items, they seem to rely on mobility items designed to let them dodge attacks by granting them high agility. Defense magic requires a lot of energy, and even the items they use for mobility are mainly powered by magic stones; however, the F-rank soldiers still need time to recharge them once in a while with their mana. Lasers and bullets head towards Sophie; she uses a projectile redirection spell to guide them into her black vortex, which just consumes them. One of the terrifying aspects of dark magic is its ability to enable darkness to consume non-living things and convert them into mana. Essentially, one can turn the very land around them into an inexhaustible energy supply by consuming it with their darkness. The bullets and lasers are naturally absorbed by her black vortex, which continuously shoots out swords, these swords have a curse on them draining the vitality of whoever's unlucky enough to be impaled by them, reducing them to dried-up corpses in seconds. For some reason, Sophie seems to be using sound magic, so every time a sword goes flying out of her vortex of darkness, it sounds like a blaster from Star Wars.
