722 Years after the Repentance

Dear self,
I seem to have forgotten to replace the charmed twine last night. I woke up within a cleansing circle of all things, the chalk that made it still resting between my fingers. It was a strange formation using a lot of archaic glyphs. It might have been connected to an Ancient magic. As far as I can tell it is meant to ward away some very specific magical influences, but I’ll be leaving it well alone until I can get someone who can interpret it to analyze its purpose.
The diviner came today as expected. He was an owlish man named Axl Rashplume. Having a tall anthropomorphic owl walking around town must have been a strange sight even among a population of kobolds. Sure, kobolds shapeshift into various things, but they can’t actually hybridize their forms when shifting between short anthropoids and small animal forms. I’m probably the only thing for leagues around to look as exotic as he does. I inherited a rare strain of albinism from my mother’s latent troll blood, which includes draining the colour from my vision apparently, as well as my appearance.
In any case, Rashplume came over an stared very seriously at all the wards surrounding the house and the workshop. He had a habit of pointing out minor details and critiquing them in a patronizing way. He liked explaining things without being asked and just assuming he was teaching me something I didn’t know.
You could be reading stolen content. Head to Royal Road for the genuine story.
I could swear I heard him make some unintelligible cooing sound while staring very attentively at one of our doorknobs. When we came to the binding wards in the workshop he became statuesque. I could only see his massive eyes shift minimally.
The binding wards are what protect against whatever might be inside any unknown artefacts when we unseal them for appraisal, so they are crucial for handling the stuff some people drag in here for analyses. I once had to appraise a flavour charm that had somehow degraded severely over time that it was cursing feral hunger into dozens of people in proximity to it. That’s why you should not use an artefact after the seal had faded.
When he stopped staring at the binding ward he informed that a fragment of divine essence had somehow lodged itself randomly right into a critical regulator of the oxalis. There was news of a few divine spirits storming through the region so it’s not inconceivable that they got violent with each other and spread ethereal shrapnel over the place. Apparently it was aligned with a domain of Fortuity which might have something to do with how it breached the warded boundary surrounding the house. Fate aligned magic is among the most difficult to counteract.
The important part is that it wasn’t our fault after all! The Guild has no way of penalizing me for an Act of Asura. I did end up getting a minor suspension from Axl while I’m under review for a complaint that woman with the glamoured earrings made about me, which is slightly unreasonable. The only reason they did it at all was because Axl was already here inspecting our warding scheme and decided I deserved it for some reason!
Now the only work I’m allowed to do is dealing with the enchantments the Quislings sold, and I’ll have to send anyone else away!
Hope we fare well.
Regards,
Me.
