Chapter 3:Studying Ancient Egyptian Language

Chapter 3:Studying Ancient Egyptian Language

Cairo Giza Port.

Everywhere were shabby small shops, horse-drawn carriages running around with people, bargaining and cursing sounds combined to create a bustling scene.

"Can you tell me where my money went?" The prison warden looked at Chen Xu empty-handed and saw Evelyn carrying two boxes. He looked left and right but didn't see the promised camels. He immediately became angry, "Are you trying to cheat me? I warn you, even here, I can arrest you and throw you into the gallows."

"At that time, click sound, your neck will break, your head will fall off, people go to hell and meet God."

"I don't believe in God either," Chen Xu said. "I am an atheist or rather a pantheist."

"What is a pantheist?" The prison warden asked suspiciously.

"Well...a pantheist is probably someone who doesn't believe in anything too much but believes in whoever treats them well or benefits them. In simple terms they are selfish individuals." Evelyn said cautiously. "I don't know if what I said is correct?"

"Yes." Chen Xu clapped his hands and shook his head. "Evelyn knows me well."

Evelyn was immediately dumbfounded by this statement. "What does that mean?"

"Uh..." Just now he was happy playing as an ancient scholar so Chen Xu forgot that Evelyn was a Westerner who didn't understand Eastern idioms.

"Don’t interrupt." The prison warden intervened. “You have to give me an explanation for why there are no camels according to plan? I gave all my savings to you.”

"Don’t worry; your money is still there.” Chen Xu replied with nonsense words again.“But we cannot buy camels here since we need to board the ship later on.We can save a lot of shipping costs if we wait until we arrive at our destination to buy camels. Don't you think so?"

"Then where is the money?" The prison warden didn't listen to Chen Xu's nonsense. "Take out the money and let me see it. If it’s still there, I'll believe you; if not, hmph!"

"Evelyn, take out the money and show him." Chen Xu said while complaining: "Nowadays people want to make money but don’t trust others. They are really annoying like Ge Lan Tai or even more."

Evelyn endured Chen Xu's nagging and endured the prison warden's shouting as she silently opened the leather box revealing a stack of cash.

"Wait." A hand pressed down on Evelyn's hand, preventing her from opening the box.

"What are you doing? Damn O'Connor! You bastard who will be hanged!" The prison warden cursed loudly. "That’s my money!"

"If you want someone to rob your money then go ahead and open it here; I don't care." O'Connor raised his hand and stepped back saying: “Prison Warden should understand Cairo’s environment better than me.”

The prison warden thought for a moment but still felt that opening it here was inappropriate,"Okay, I believe you guys; we’ll open it when we get on board."

"Oh yeah, O'Connor can you guarantee that what you said is true?" Evelyn suddenly asked.

"What guarantee? What did he say?" The prison warden leaned over curiously.

"It has nothing to do with you." O'Connor slapped the prison warden in the face with his palm pushing him away before turning towards Evelyn solemnly saying: "It was because they believed too much that my troops crossed Libya into Egypt looking for that city but instead of gold and gems waiting for us were blood and sand."

O’Connor turned around walked away saying:"If you don’t believe me then feel free to go back; I won't force you."

"It's not that, I..." Evelyn wanted to explain but found she didn’t know how. She could only stomp her feet and say angrily: "Forget it, I believe you."

The group entered the large steamship one after another.

...

Night falls, stars twinkle.

"This word is pronounced 'si'."

"Si?"

"Yes, it should be pronounced as 'si', there's no mistake." Evelyn said seriously.

"Thank you. These characters are really difficult to learn." Chen Xu stretched his hands and leaned back in the chair. His body crackled and popped from sitting for too long; he needed to move around.

After boarding the ship, Chen Xu found an excuse to learn Ancient Egyptian with Evelyn. He wanted to obtain the magical power contained in The Book of Dead, so learning Ancient Egyptian was necessary.

And Evelyn, who understood The Book of Dead and The Golden Sun Book, was the best teacher here at least.

"In fact, Ancient Egyptian is not difficult to learn. It's not as hard as your Chinese characters," Evelyn comforted him.

"Oh thank you for your praise. I think I should be happy that a beautiful lady like yourself compliments my country right?" Chen Xu picked up a beer bottle and opened it with a pop sound. "Let's celebrate then."

"Oh I don't drink alcohol. Ladies shouldn't drink alcohol or at least this kind of alcohol," instinctively lying down on her backside behind her seat cushioned by pillows she replied.

"Okay." Disappointedly throwing away his beer bottle aside, Chen Xu said: "Then please continue teaching me because my time is running out."

"What do you mean by time running out?" Evelyn asked curiously.

"It doesn't mean anything; just please hurry up..."

Bang!

Something was thrown onto the table making a loud noise which startled Evelyn.

"I'm sorry if I scared you but what are you two doing here?" O'Connor looked suspiciously between them both.

"We're just studying," Chen Xu said helplessly knowing that O'Connor liked Evelyn but also felt jealous towards him.

"Chen Xu said he wants to learn Ancient Egyptian so I taught him," explained Evelyn. "He's learning well, he basically remembers it after a few times of teaching. He's a language genius."

"That's amazing!" O'Connor was shocked by Chen Xu's learning speed. "I think you should become a translator instead; it won't be much slower than earning money in Hamunaptra."

"I'm not here for gold," Chen Xu explained: "As I said before, what I want is The Book of Dead. In Ancient Egypt, The Book of Dead is an anthology of poems praising the Pharaohs and represents the wisdom crystallization of ancient Egyptians. I want to find it and contribute its contents to the world."

He had already searched but there was no such thing as The Book of Dead in this world nor did those poems praising Ra appear so he could say whatever he wanted.

"Your idea is really great." Evelyn felt how petty she was compared to Chen Xu's ideas because she only wanted spells from The Golden Sun book out of curiosity rather than contributing something great to society.

"Not great at all; truly great are the Pharaohs and ancient Egyptian people who created these magnificent poems." Chen Xu smiled.

Of course, he wouldn't tell them that The Book Of Dead wasn't just about praising Pharaohs or Ra with beautiful poetry but also contained spells and incantations which included magical powers from Ancient Egypt -the true wisdom crystallization- belonging solely to pharaohs and priests.

"Compared with you, I feel like a despicable woman who only wants to satisfy her own curiosity," Evelyn said ashamedly: "I came here looking for The Golden Sun book which contains Egyptian runes and spells. Since childhood, I've been fascinated by this book; it has always been my dream."

Evelyn suddenly stood up shouting loudly:

"But now I have decided that I will find this book then put it in the museum where everyone can study its content!"

"Woah, that's a great idea!" Chen Xu clapped his hands frantically. "Miss Evelyn is truly amazing with such a great dream."

"Thank you for your praise," Evelyn bowed shyly.

"You two remind me of actors in a play." O'Connor said sourly: "By the way, can you shoot?"

"No." Chen Xu shook his head. He was from an era of peace; he had never even seen what real guns looked like let alone learn how to use them. The only thing he knew about guns were those 'papapa' sounds on TV.

"Well then, it's my pleasure to teach you how to shoot next." O'Connor threw him a revolver loaded with bullets. "It's very simple; just like this."

O'Connor opened the safety catch and pulled the trigger making a loud sound while saying: "This is how enemies die."

Chen Xu thought for a moment knowing that he would face some danger soon so he decided to accept O'Connor's kindness: "Can you give me some bullets? I need to practice shooting and aiming first."

"Sure." O'Connor spread out his bag revealing firearms,
