Among them were many children who were being squeezed by the crowd causing them to cry out in pain. But no one paid much attention to them except for harsh criticism or rebuke.
"It's all our fault." At first she didn't realize it until she saw this scene. Evelyn suddenly realized what kind of disaster she had brought upon Egypt. "If it weren't for us, they wouldn't have had to leave their homes."
Originally she just wanted to fulfill her childhood dream of finding the Book of Amun-Ra but now she woke up from that dream realizing what kind of catastrophe she had caused Egypt.
Looking at the fleeing crowd in front of her made Evelyn feel particularly uncomfortable: "Chen Xu, can we go back and kill Imhotep to end this disaster?"
If at first Imhotep's relationship with her was only about being chased or hunted down then now she realized that their relationship was not just about chasing or being chased but more about a demon king wanting to destroy the world while a hero wants to protect it.
Just like in novels where if a protagonist accidentally releases a demon king then he must either kill or reseal him so as not bring disaster upon others.
This is responsibility that cannot be shirked away by simply running away since ever since releasing Imhotep from his prison cell; this responsibility has already been set in stone.
"What do you want to do...?" Chen Xu looked at Evelyn, somewhat understanding what she was thinking.
"It's our fault. We should take responsibility." Evelyn said firmly: "Running away is not my style."
"If that's what you want..." Chen Xu said indifferently.
Meteor showers and blood rain didn't mean much to him since this kind of magic that changes the environment on a large scale was just a small trouble for him. The reason he wanted to leave Egypt was more about protecting Evelyn.
Protecting Evelyn, maintaining the plot, allowing the Bracelet of Death and Spear of Judgment to appear in the future so they could be taken. Since Evelyn didn't want to leave Egypt anymore then he would stay with her in Egypt too.
"Thank you." When she smiled it looked ugly because even though she was sad, she forced herself to smile.
In her eyes, Chen Xu stayed here for her sake. "If you want to thank me then give me the Book of Amun-Ra," Chen Xu kept an eye on it all the time; this book contained secret names and words of gods as well as secrets about ancient Egyptian deities - The Book of Ra.
Evelyn was speechless. She looked deeply at Chen Xu, as if from the moment she met him, he had been a straightforward and eager man who would stop at nothing to get what he wanted.
"If you can kill Imhotep and save all of Egypt, I'll give you the Book of Amun-Ra," Evelyn made a promise with Chen Xu.
The Book of Amun-Ra belonged to Egypt itself and was the common property of the Egyptian people. Therefore, giving it to the hero who saved Egypt could be considered returning it to its rightful owners.
"For her at this moment, the desire to save Egypt has defeated her dreams. She feels guilty and believes that the best way to eliminate guilt is to eradicate its root.
"Of course," Chen Xu said happily. He had reason to be happy because he had been struggling with how to take the Sun Gold Sutra from Evelyn's hands without harming their friendship, but happiness came suddenly.
Anyway, he wanted to eliminate Imhotep. Imhotep was a hidden danger for him, one that could explode at any time and kill him.
"Let me find Imhotep. But before that, we need to hold a sacrifice," Chen Xu said excitedly.
Evelyn looked puzzled when she heard this. "What kind of sacrifice?"
"Of course it's a sacrifice offered to Anubis, the god of death," Chen Xu casually replied. "It's impossible for us to find Imhotep with our current strength since he is more proficient in magic than I am. Therefore, we need the power of Anubis."
This text was taken from Royal Road. Help the author by reading the original version there.
"To borrow the power of Anubis requires holding a sacrifice."
"You're becoming more mysterious by the day, Chen Xu." Evelyn looked at him with mixed emotions.
Since obtaining The Book of Dead Souls, Chen Xu had become very mysterious compared to his previous self who was lively and detail-oriented. Now he was like a nervous wizard carrying around a book and followed by a black cat in dark corners muttering curses while holding virgin blood.
Thinking about virgin blood made Evelyn blush slightly as she shook her head vigorously trying shake off those impure thoughts from her mind.
"It's not mysterious at all; it's just due to different perspectives on viewing the world causing some distance between us," Chen Xu smiled faintly.
He felt somewhat helpless as if people always held an attitude of respect but kept their distance towards those who were mystical - whether they were priests or wizards or pastors - anyone who truly possessed power would always have a certain distance from ordinary people. Ordinary people either revered or worshipped them, but they would still exclude them and not easily talk to them. Even Evelyn, his new friend, had begun to subtly reject him.
Perhaps she didn't realize it herself, but Chen Xu could feel it. For example, when sleeping, no one wanted to be in the same room with him, even though he was used to sleeping alone.
"Okay, we should hold the ceremony as soon as possible, but this ceremony may be a bit cruel."
The cruel ceremony is not really cruel. At least for those who are burned by flames, the so-called cruel ceremony is just a joke.
When Chen Xu found someone who had been touched by flames and summoned sand to extinguish the fire, this person was still gasping for breath.
"Kill me." A man whose appearance before death couldn't be determined whether he was burly or wretched looked at Chen Xu eagerly and hoped that Chen Xu could end his pain.
"I want you to help me perform a ritual sacrifice to Anubis of Death. If I complete this ritual sacrifice, I may be able to expel this sudden disaster. Are you willing?" Chen Xu squatted down and looked at him. In order to prove his identity again, he had to summon the mummy once more. "I am an Orientalist but also a priest - a true priest who worships gods."
"I'm willing!"
Maybe he read it wrong; Chen Xu felt that the person in front of him who was charred all over and unrecognizable was smiling.
"Well then let's start performing the ritual now." Chen Xu stood up. "Once completed you will become a hero but destined not recorded in history books; perhaps only existing within some mythological legend."
"Evelyn turn around don't look; Suleiman watch me perform this ritual because maybe someday you'll need to do it too," said Chen Xu.
The ritual was both cruel yet not really so because it required voluntary sacrifices from its participants.
"Anpu! Anpu! Anpu!" cried out solemnly by Chengxu.
Anpu was the pronunciation of Anubis in ancient Egypt. Calling out to him, Chen Xu could clearly feel the gaze from the underworld.
"The first cut is dedicated to Osiris, the supreme god of death."
Chen Xu raised his knife that had already been prepared and slashed it down on the man's body but unfortunately no blood flowed out.
The man didn't make any sound as if this cut hadn't even touched him.
"Has his blood dried up?" Chen Xu frowned deeply. "Has he lost all sense of pain? Then will this ritual be successful?"
Without painful torture from sacrifices, it was uncertain whether or not this ritual would succeed for Death God Anubis required such suffering from its participants.
"Forget it; we can't give up now."
"The second cut is dedicated to Isis, queen of power."
Chen Xu lifted his butcher knife again and struck at the man's body. At this point, there was a slight change in the expression on his face.
Seeing this change, Chen Xu knew that he still felt pain so he immediately began with third strike:
"The third cut is dedicated to Death God Anubis!"
A cold wind suddenly blew over them causing Chen Xu's body to stiffen. His knife fell onto where male heart should have been but couldn't penetrate through - a carriage accompanied by cold winds came through and passed right through male’s body taking away his soul along with it towards horizon before slowly disappearing into thin air...
Only Egypt's most prestigious people could summon Hell Knights like these who were sent by underworlds to guide souls back home after their deaths. In The Mummy movie series' finale, Imhotep stole Evelyne’s powers which led her husband Rick O’Connell becoming one such knight himself!
These are enough to prove that the person in front of us is either a direct descendant of the pharaoh or a direct descendant of the high priest, with an extremely noble identity. His status is so noble that even the knights of hell in the underworld would pay him respect.
"However, can anyone tell me whether I succeeded or failed when my sacrifice died before my ritual was completed?"
Chen Xu looked up and howled at the sky, tears streaming down his face. He had finally found someone who was not afraid to die and willing to be sacrificed, only for them to die just before he could complete his final strike.
"You see," Evelyn suddenly said from behind him.
In front of Chen Xu, a black skull stared at him as if waiting for his request.
"Please help me find Imhotep," Chen Xu quickly said upon seeing it.
