Chapter 16:Settle down in Germany

Chapter 16:Settle down in Germany

As expected, Jonassen was really angry when he saw the full amount of gold. His eyes lit up and he rushed forward to embrace the gold.

However, he was thrown out by a mummy that flew out even faster.

"I said," Jonassen got up from the ground and rubbed his chest in distress. He had been punched hard by the mummy.

"You promised me not to take any gold."

"I did promise you not to take any gold, but since you guys didn't want to take it away yourselves, I reluctantly took it." Chen Xu looked like he was in a dilemma, which made Jonassen furious.

"You...!" Jonassen almost bit off his own good tooth. He stared at the gold with longing eyes and wanted to grab all of it immediately. However, there were five mummies behind the camels that made him afraid.

"Are you not afraid of scaring children if you put these mummies on display in public?"

"Uncle Jonassen, these mummies are very well-behaved," Suleiman said innocently.

Jonassen's face turned green instantly as he shouted at Suleiman: "Shut up! I wasn't talking about you!"

"How could you scare Suleiman like this?" Evelyn went over and hugged Suleiman while looking displeased with Jonassen.

"It was clearly him..."

Before Jonassen could argue further, Chen Xu interrupted: "There is no one left in this city."

Ever since disasters such as meteor showers appeared, Cairo has become like an outbreak of plague where people couldn't wait to leave. Those who didn't leave died under that natural disaster. There were no longer anyone on the streets except for Chen Xu and his team.

"It's our fault." Evelyn looked somewhat gloomy.

"Okay then let's change topic." O'Connell stepped forward when he saw everyone getting depressed. "Chen Xu, where are you planning to go now?"

"Where?" Chen Xu looked a bit puzzled. He really hadn't thought about where to go. This wasn't his home; his home was in another world.

He had always followed Evelyn and her team, so he didn't need a home for the time being. It wasn't until their friends were leaving and the banquet was over that he suddenly became confused because he couldn't find his own home.

"If you have nowhere else to go, you can come with us to England." O'Connell saw Chen Xu's expression and understood that he had nowhere else to go.

In fact, O'Connell had always felt that Chen Xu was very mysterious. They first met at Cairo Prison when Chen Xu behaved very strangely as if he knew everything. Later on, he even transformed into a wizard who helped them defeat Imhotep and rescued Egypt from disaster.

Until now, O'Connell still didn’t know much about Chen Xu's past.

"No thanks, I need to go back," said Chen Xu firmly as his gaze turned resolute. "My house is gone but my country is still there. Wherever there is a place with that name it will be my country."

Chen Xu's eyes fell on the distant east where there was nothing but chaos and turmoil among his people of origin. He knew that although they shared no blood relationship with him or any cultural similarities with this world’s easterners whatsoever, they were still connected.

He felt that he should do something, as he believed that the nation had suffered enough and his abilities could help them emerge from the war.

"But before that, I will go to Germany," Chen Xu said.

"Germany?" O'Connor asked.

"Yes, Germany. I need to deal with this batch of gold," Chen Xu replied.

The history of this world was similar to the history before he crossed over; there were no significant differences - true history had long been buried in dust.

In Germany, a historical hero was beginning to rise and take center stage: Hitler. In November 1923, Hitler launched his "March on Berlin" campaign. Today marks only one month since this event took place.

"Why Germany? Wouldn't it be better to handle the gold in England?" Johnson jumped up and down excitedly, wishing she could steal the gold immediately.

"Because Germany needs it," Chen Xu smiled faintly.

All of the world's gold was now concentrated in London, so handling this batch of gold there might not fetch a high price. However, things were different in defeated Germany; they urgently needed gold to stabilize their currency if they didn't want their money becoming worthless paper notes.

In fact, when Mark depreciated most severely its value was lower than scrap paper. If you walked on the street at that time you would often see someone holding large amounts of Marks trying to buy paper even though printing Marks cost more than an equivalent thickness and length of paper at that time.

"All right then. I respect your choice but let's go together; you can leave midway by changing ships."

"Of course."

...

November in Germany was bleak; war brought too many negative effects upon this country and defeat pushed its people directly into an abyss. They drank heavily ,were dissatisfied with everything, and loudly criticized government officials. The German mark also devalued massively like it did historically. It wasn't worth more than scrap paper and even wiping your butt with it was considered too harsh.

In this era, a loaf of bread was worth millions of Marks. The batch of gold that Chen Xu brought with him was worth tens of trillions of Marks.

This was an insane number; it represented the amount that Deutsche Bank would need to print for years in order to have enough Marks. However, for Chen Xu, Mark's value clearly could not meet his requirements. Even if all the Junkers were combined together they still couldn't afford this batch of gold.

Finally, Chen Xu had to reach an agreement with Deutsche Bank and deposit these gold bars and gems into their treasury as a guarantee for issuing German marks. In fact, it was because of this batch of gold that Germany's financial system was saved from collapsing completely; otherwise one loaf bread would cost tens or hundreds million marks which meant despair for ordinary people.

The most interesting thing is that Deutsche Bank once wanted to use this batch of gold as compensation for war reparations owed to England and France in order to relieve its own pressure. The CEO who proposed this idea ended up being turned into a mummy by Chen Xu and thrown at the doorsteps of parliament building.Since then both German politicians and Junkers looked at Chen Xu with awe calling him "the wizard from the East".

In such an environment, Chen Xu gathered many bankrupt industrialists, organized them to produce and expand externally, gradually forming a secret underground group - the Dark Council. The chairman of this council was Chen Xu himself, a priest known as the propagator of darkness by entrepreneurs.

In order to support the growth of members in the Dark Council, Chen Xu sold his gems to British nobles for large amounts of pounds and then injected these pounds into the enterprises owned by internal members of the council. He instructed them to seek technology in America and restore/expand production just like how Germany once introduced American capital and technology. However, here it was replaced with Chen Xu's personal capital.

It was because of this that some factories in Germany quickly recovered and slowly rose to become the largest enterprises in Germany, including Siemens and BMW, amidst a bleak atmosphere.

In the tavern, a seductive Jewish girl twisted her hips, attracting many perverts' drool. Chen Xu hid himself in a secluded corner, drinking heavily.

His body was completely covered by a large black robe, and his face was also obscured by it.

"Teacher, the person you are looking for has been found." Suleiman walked into the tavern and immediately walked towards Chen Xu respectfully.

During this period of time, Suleiman followed Chen Xu around and experienced the training and guidance of those merchants. He had gradually matured.

"He is now at a meeting. I overheard that they plan to kidnap key officials from Bavaria's state government."

"As expected!" A hint of coldness flashed across Chen Xu's face. Although some German companies were slowly recovering with his support, Germany's overall environment remained poor. The French invaded most parts of Germany leading to an unprecedented inflation crisis.

"Do we need to help him?" Suleiman did not forget Chen Xu's appreciation for this little mustache man so he tried to offer his opinion: "If we take action ourselves, we can ensure the success of his plan." These mortals could not possibly stop their teacher; it was his fanaticism as well as faith.

"No." Chen Xu shook his head. "His operation cannot succeed; he must fail."

Anyone familiar with history would have to admit that it was Hitler’s failure during Operation “March on Berlin” which led him being imprisoned where he had an opportunity to sort out his thoughts making them clearer while paving way for future power struggles. It can be said that without this period of energy expenditure he would never have been able to form such disciplined Nazi party like what happened historically but rather just remain insignificant.

"I need to help him, but not here. It's after he goes to prison."

Hitler's rapid development was related to the book he wrote in prison called "My Struggle". The publication of this book allowed millions of Germans to accept his ideas and when he was released from prison, they fell at his feet.

In history, it was a mysterious force that helped publish this book. Now what Chen Xu needs to do is replace this mysterious force and help him publish it.
