Present time
Nigel scanned the arena. It featured high walls, presumably so that players couldn’t scale the walls and escape. Many stadium-style seats overlooked the fighting grounds. The ground was made from dirt and rock. Doc Chop looked ridiculous in his metal suit. His head was much larger than the armor that covered his puny body. His hands were almost as large as his head. He looked like a cross between a robot and a dump truck with a head attached.
I must be in a video game for the doctor to look like this.
“Prepare to die, boy!”
Nigel checked his gear and loadout. His primary weapon was a one-handed sword, and his shield was something out of a fantasy movie. It was ornate and had a swirl pattern on the edges. A sword was engraved in the middle, and two dragons adorned each side. Nigel allocated enough points to augment his sword, spell slots, and shield. All of these had proficiency bonuses. He chose medicine and athletics as his skills, and allocated most of his ability points to strength and charisma. For his fighting style, since he didn’t want his cool shield to go to waste. He checked Doc Chop’s build; it was a melee fighter class with brute force abilities. As long as Nigel didn’t get too close, he should be fine. As the timer hit zero, the doctor charged, but didn’t have enough stamina to hit Nigel at full force. Nigel stumbled back and only lost about 5 percent of his health. He applied a bandage, which restored him to full health. Nigel raised his sword and charged Doc Chop, who blocked his first blow. He followed the attack with a shield slam, which took half of his stamina and a quarter of Doc Chop’s health. The doctor jumped, then landed next to Nigel, who raised his shield in a defensive maneuver. One third of Nigel’s health disappeared. Doc Chop dug into the ground with a massive hand and unearthed a small boulder, then chucked it at Nigel. He repeated the process until a rain of rock surrounded him. The shield absorbed most of the damage.

The spell book!
Nigel unhooked the book, which was made from parchment and had a pure silver cover. Most of the spells were grayed out, but the lightning spell was available. Nigel raised his sword and cast the spell, which electrified Doc Chop’s suit and drained 90 percent of his health. It would have been a greater victory if Nigel’s health wasn’t at 30 percent. All of Nigel’s cool-downs were active, so he needed to dodge most of the doctor’s attacks if he was to survive. Since Doc Chop’s primary attacks were melee-based, he relied on his strength. He launched another boulder. Nigel dodged it easily enough, but some loose rock took another 2 percent off. His mana and constitution regenerated, and as soon as his lesser heal was available, he restored another twenty points of health, then cast another lightning spell. The doctor’s health was down to a single digit. He roared as he removed massive chunks of earth and sent it Nigel’s way. Nigel barricaded himself behind his shield, which absorbed half the damage. Nigel charged, then swung his sword at Doc Chop’s obscenely large head. The doctor jumped back, but not quickly enough. He got nicked, but applied a bandage in time. His health spiked to 25 percent before lowering slightly from the bleed damage. Nigel cast a smite spell as he brought his sword down on Doc Chop’s right arm, which was severed at the bicep. The man screamed like a child. Nigel was granted an extra attack and chose another lightning bolt. The doctor’s skin darkened, then ignited. He picked up his arm and threw it at Nigel, which caused another 10 percent of damage, but Doc Chop was toast. He collapsed in a heap before the mighty Paladin that was Nigel. The world went black.
