It was a drizzly night, with only a few people wandering the street. As midnight drew near, the number of pedestrians dwindled even further. Almost no one was out in this remote area near the woods.
This area was situated between a city, a small country town, and a forest. Before a leisure healthcare complex developer took over, this was just a barren expanse of rocks and waist-high grass. Now that it was partially clear and fenced off, no one would willingly step out of their ride to walk around, especially on a rainy night like this.
Yet, footsteps echoed through the area. Their sound muffled by mud as they slowly approached a jagged, rocky obstruction. The dense grass did not impede the footsteps; in fact, it seemed to part and create a path for the person, as if they were taking a leisurely stroll along the beach.
Finally, the person stopped in front of a cave, or rather, a hole that barely accommodated a person. The drizzle pattered silently against his umbrella, but his knees emitted a light-cracking sound as he bent them, as if he hasn’t squatted in a very long time. This somehow alarmed the person in the “cave”.
The “cave” was very dark. Nothing should have been visible with normal eyesight, yet a lock of exposed hair was clearly seen. That lock of dark pink-colored hair, faintly glowed.
“Hey, why take shelter over here? Are you lost? Did you forget your way home?” The young man with the umbrella had a cheerful tone. His words illuminated this opening scene, which looked like a horror movie.
The owner of that lock of dark pink-colored hair didn’t answer his question. However, she slightly raised her head, revealing her cautious eyes that were bright and sharp. The weak glow showed her silhouette, which resembled that of a teenage girl about to become a young woman, but she was very different from an ordinary female – her body glowed faintly, but the young man with the umbrella did not.

“Well, it’s late now, and it’s raining. It’s not a safe place for a girl to stay outside.” The young man with the umbrella said with a smile. His figure was a bit blurred by the glow of the girl, “I live in the town nearby. Would you like to stay overnight at my house and go home tomorrow? Don’t worry, my mom, dad and my little sister are staying with me too. You can share a room with my sister. What do you say?”
When she didn’t answer for quite some time, he asked again, “Can I make a rude guess that you’re unable to speak now? Or do you think I’m not trustworthy, so you dare not to go to my home? It’s okay, I’ll stay here with you until the sun rises. I can’t just leave you here and do nothing.”
He moved a rock near to the cave, big enough for him to sit on. Just when he was about to take a seat on the wet rock, he felt the corner of his clothing being pulled. Slowly, the girl emerged from the “cave”, standing beside him under the same umbrella. She wore a set of clothes clearly not her size, resembling discarded garments. Her beautiful hair was wrapped around her neck and concealed beneath several layers of shawl.
Something didn’t feel quite right. Anyone who saw her would have the same thought: she should be wearing something pretty, something far more adorable, and even…glamorous.
Yes, she deserved to be dressed in glamorous manner, but now she resembled a majestic eagle stained by filthy mud.
“I…I’ll come with you,” she said, her voice sounding harsh as if she hadn’t spoken in a very long time. Her cautious demeanor vanished, and she appeared surprisingly innocent.
“Your clothes are so thin!” He exclaimed, blinking his eyes. He handed her the umbrella, quickly removed his jacket, and placed it on her. With a casual tone, he retrieved his umbrella and said, “Okay, let’s head back home and have a hot bath. I’ll give you some medicine to prevent catching a cold. I’m sure you don’t want a runny nose tomorrow.”
She didn’t respond to his words, but quietly followed his lead as they made their way towards the nearby town.
To most people, the sight of a lone woman following a stranger to his home would raise alarm bells. It could easily become tomorrow’s headline with the woman portrayed as a victim of an unfortunate criminal case. However, she’s wasn’t afraid at all…because she was the one others should be wary of.
