Breaking the Shadow

Kuroyuki and Kazuki then began to fight. Their blades clash seemingly every second, as sparks fly around them from their completely opposite elements, light and darkness. "I thought you were dead!!" Kazuki yelled as he avoided an energy streak from Kuroyuki's dark blade. He then jumped from building to building to avoid further attacks.

Kuroyuki then called a small number of hunters to help him, then answered his enemy, "Yes I was! Until the darkness came and saved me. I'm no longer expecting you a bunch of cowards who only think about yourselves to come and save me,"

"But Kotetsu said you went alone!" Kazuki kept communicating even though he had to dodge and slash the hunters that were coming towards him with various weapons.

"He lied to you! I wasn't just run on my own to distract enemies, I saved his life and Rin's... a stray hunter attacked me and made me incapacitated. He didn't even look back and just ran... and now look at him! A coward turned into a demon and blamed his own weakness on others!" Kuroyuki berated Kotetsu until his dark element imbued his blade.

He then charged forward to the busy Kazuki, but he managed to dodge the stab and let Kuroyuki slice the left part of his torso. He then held onto his wound that was bleeding considerably.

"See? This is how I felt back then. No one to call for help, no comrades, no teammates, no family, nothing! How does it feel to be a hero? Just because you think differently than others, it doesn't mean you're special and have to act out alone, no?" Kuroyuki kept rambling while calling back his hunters. He approached Kazuki with darkness surrounding his fingernails. "Because you're supposed to be my original 'teammate', I'm gonna make sure it's you who will suffer the same fate,"

Back at base 37, the warriors were struggling with the increasing number of hunters. They were harder to kill since the last time they encountered them. Most of the warriors wanted to give up and run, but Aosuke, the leader of the pack kept pushing them to their limits in order to defend the base.

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road. If you spot it on Amazon, please report it.

"Everyone remove yourself to higher grounds! Make sure there's fire element-Jaegers on every rooftop!" he ordered the warriors through a loud communication tower nearby. His allies were unsure with his plan, but they followed through anyway.

"What are you trying to do?" Kentarou asked him when he ran past him.

"To burn them... and the base," Aosuke replied quietly with great determination.

"What the hell---?!" Kentarou was shocked and was about to debate him, but a second after he adjusted his own thoughts, a hunter punched him in the face. Every warrior then tried to hop between buildings to get into safer rooftops. Some succeed, some failed. Now there are less than half of the original warriors left. After securing the remaining rooftops, every fire element targeted their blades downward and towards the hunters.

Aosuke signaled the fire benders to be steady, "Fire!!" Along with whipping his hand, he ordered the fire element-Jaegers to blast huge flames towards the hunters and the surrounding buildings. Some even burned the very building they stood on top of. After a while, the Jaegers grew tired and out of energy to blast fire non-stop. Most of the hunters were burned to a crisp, then magically releasing the person possessed by it. While some hunters were stronger than the others, they still survived and tried to reach the warriors.

Ishigaki then seized the opportunity to help by praying to his ancestor, focusing his energy into his Aurics, and borrowing Yato's zodiac sword slingshotted himself from the building he was standing on to the next building. While momentarily floating in mid-air, Ishigaki's eyes glowed white with an unfamiliar form of white fire.

He then blasted a huge wave of fire from above, burning the hunters below with extremely high temperatures. But miraculously, the warriors didn't even feel his fire, nor the building around them. Ishigaki's control over his white fire was perfect, as he targeted only the hunters. Ishigaki then landed on the rooftop across the building he jumped from, safely caught by other warriors on that side. The warriors then cheered as they realized they had succeeded in defending the base from the hunters' invasion. They quickly set spare beacons to further guard the base.
