Poor Speary

The next morning Cain headed out to the research lab, and waited for the lecture to begin.

“Alright, let us continue with how ‘Break Genes’ helped technology. Let us take the teleportation pod as the most basic example. The teleportation pod is made up of genes related to space, by using multiple genes that support one another we can create a teleportation system. In the case of most teleportation pods, they are made using the set point gene, the point recall gene, and the teleportation gene. The set point gene sets up a point in space, the point recall gene acts as a signal to find that point set in space, and finally the teleportation gene teleports you to that point. There are also thousands of other support genes to help the process.”

“We can use another example by talking about the virtual world. First there is the virtual world simulating gene, the virtual world connection gene, and the virtual world foundation gene, these are the three main genes used for the virtual world. The watches or helmets most people use to connect to the virtual world first simulate the virtual world, then they use the virtual world connection gene to connect to the virtual world foundation gene.”

“This process is essentially how all technology works, however I’d recommend you learn more since the way I explained it is an extreme simplification of how it truly works.”

Cain once again went to ask questions after the lecture was finished. The professor seemed glad and was happy to see another young genetic researcher. Cain noticed that a young lady was standing beside the professor this time, she was beautiful and it was the first time Cain found himself staring at a woman. The girl noticing his gaze started to blush

“Ahh Cain, this is my disciple, Miren. She has extreme talent when it comes to genetic research. If only she were a bit more strong willed, she could get a lot done.”

“Oh, It’s nice to meet you Miren.”

Cain put on his best smile, it was his first time liking a girl and naturally he didn’t want to look like a fool. Unfortunately he had messed up, he wasn’t used to smiling so his smile was somewhat horrifying, luckily he was an attractive man or she might have screamed. Miren started giggling upon seeing Cain’s strange smile, making his face feel hot. He decided to cut off this conversation quick before things got any more awkward.

Stolen novel; please report.

Cain kept on thinking about Miren as he headed back to his house, but he shook off the thought. He was still weak, so now wasn’t the time for romance. He quickly put his focus onto missions, it was time to start raising his contribution points. He decided to just take every Genetic General Tier 1 mission, and he didn’t plan to come back to the sect until he was done all of them. He packed up some essentials and headed out.

The first mission stop was the to kill a crystal toad king in the Alrez Swamp’s. This wasn’t going to be like the combat exam he took in the past, beasts had access to gene abilities unlike the warriors in the test, meaning they were a lot stronger.

He headed into a small village located on the outskirts of the Alrez Swamps and purchased a map. He needed to head for the heart of the swamp, that's where the crystal toad king was. He wasted no time and headed into the swamps. As he got deeper into the swamps a thick fog started clouding up his view. This fog was toxic to regular creatures however it was ineffective on him.

“Hiss”

Suddenly a viper shot out from a bush beside him. He quickly swung his spear severing it into two. He didn’t want to be wasteful since anything useful could be sold to the sect for more contribution points, so he stored away the vipers corpse. This sabotage wasn’t going to be the last however, as more and more creatures started attacking him.

After a few hours of marching, he finally managed to get into the heart of the swamp. The thick fog instantly cleared up revealing an old tree, lounging in front of the tree was a lazy looking toad. The head of the toad had a crystal crown, however the crown didn’t seem to be a real object and was instead a part of the frog itself. The toad rolled over and stared directly at Cain, however it seemed extremely disinterested and started ignoring him.

He suddenly felt bad, he was about to kill this innocent toad, naturally that wasn’t going to stop him. This was a cruel world, and every improvement was built on the corpses of others. He wasn’t so soft as to let this feeling change his mind. The toad, as if noticing his intentions hopped up. It’s massive frame fell down from the sky onto the area he was standing. Using his ability he flashed away dodging the attack

The area where the toads body landed was instantly smashed, as mud and stones flew everywhere. The toad got up and turned around to face Cain, it opened its mouth as its tongue rocketed out towards him. He flashed to the side and sliced down on the extended tongue, severing it. The toad instantly went into a frenzy as its eyes turned into a deep shade of red. Cain kept attacking it but its skin was thick rendering most of his attacks useless. Cain tried attacking the toads eyes, but they were like gems of the highest quality, even stronger than its skin. He wanted to attack its mouth but after severing its tongue it refused to open. He finally put his attention towards the final weakness left on the toads body.

“I’m sorry speary, but you’ll have to take one for the team”

Cain tossed his spear and watched it pierce the toads rear end. The toad struggled for a bit before collapsing. Cain had won the battle, but his poor spear had been humiliated, it was a victory, but at what cost?
