TBE Chapter 4

Chapter 4

“We’ve waited for such a long time!” Kid said then he threw himself at Ezekiel.

When the 4-year-old boy arrived, the boy threw himself at him as well and suddenly both boys cried. Ezekiel then knew that his siblings were truly scared. They were all alone in the world and right now the only person they could depend on was their big brother and he was gone for several hours.

Ezekiel suddenly wondered what would happen to the boys if he didn’t return home. He didn’t want to think about it anymore and was thankful that although he died on Earth, he was transmigrated to this world with a powerful system and could help these two young boys. He vowed that from then on, these two young boys were his brothers and would do everything in his power to make sure that they all live comfortably from then on and his powerful system would make that vow possible.

“Hey, don’t cry anymore. I’m here and I’ve brought food! It’s delicious food! Let’s go inside so we can eat,” Ezekiel told the two boys.

He brought his siblings inside their small hut. The hut was poorly made and Ezekiel reckoned that a small storm would probably collapse it in no time. Inside the hut, there was a bed that the three boys shared, a small stone fireplace where they also cooked, and a small table with three small chairs. There was one chest where the three probably kept their clothes and other personal things.

Kid prepared three wooden plates that looked very rough and three cups made of wood. Ezekiel could see that the plates and cups were homemade and it was probably made by his body. Then both of his siblings watched Ezekiel expectantly.

Ezekiel openly retrieved the loaf of bread and a liter of water from his storage and put them on the table. The two young boys both gasped at the sudden appearance of the food and water.

“We’ll eat first before I answer all of your questions,” Ezekiel told his younger brother.

He put two slices on each of the three plates and filled the cups with water then he cast Prestidigitation on their meal. For the bread, he thought that it should taste like French Toast, and for the water, he thought that it should taste like orange juice. He was glad that his magic system, although loosely based on DnD didn’t require him to have spell ingredient components and could even cast the spells without any verbal or somatic components.

Both of the boys were looking at Ezekiel in wonder and Kid kept mouthing the word “magic”. Then Ezekiel gestured for the boys to start eating.

When the boys started eating the bread, Kid loudly exclaimed that the bread was the most delicious food that he had ever eaten in his life and even Chip was so focused on eating that the young boy ignored the world.

The two boys then drank some of the water in the cup and were surprised at the delicious orange juice then they continued eating until the two slices of bread were gone.

Ezekiel didn’t eat since he was still a bit full from the bread that he had eaten a few hours ago. He also had to be a bit frugal since their resources were truly limited right now.

His two siblings then eyed the bread on his plate and Ezekiel told them that he had already eaten and they could take one each. The boys then gleefully grabbed the slices of bread from his plate and continued eating the bread that tasted like French Toast. After the food was gone, both boys drank the remaining water in their cups that tasted like Orange Juice and they both thanked Ezekiel for their food.

After that, Ezekiel saw that Chip was sleepy but the first thing that he did was to remove Chip's clothes so he could clean them with Prestidigitation. After the clothes were clean, he proceeded to cast the same spell on the little boy, and after 4 castings, the boy was clean. He dressed the boy in the newly cleaned clothes, cleaned up the bed using the same spell, and then cast a final Prestidigitation to make the bed warm and put the boy in the bed. After a couple of minutes, the 4-year-old boy was asleep.

“Okay Kid, let’s talk,” Ezekiel told his brother but he gestured that they should talk outside to not disturb their young brother.

When arrived outside, he was bombarded by Kid with a lot of questions.

“Did you turn into a wizard? How did you turn into a wizard? Can you conjure us a big house? Can you bring Father and Mother back?”

The questions that Kid asked saddens Ezekiel especially the question about their parents.

“I was bitten by some sort of magical snake. I thought I died but when I woke up I had magic but you can’t tell anybody since they might take me away from you, okay? The magic that I gained is very simple but it does grow in time. Unfortunately, I will not be able to bring our parents back.”

The boy nodded vigorously and Ezekiel saw that the boy was truly afraid of being separated from his brother but right now they needed to lie low and it would be tiring to keep hiding his magic from his brothers. At least right now Chip couldn’t speak straight sentences yet based on the boy's reaction earlier.

“Aside from gaining magic, one side effect of the magical snake bite was I had forgotten everything. The only thing that I remembered is our parents, you, and Chip.”

Kid ran towards Ezekiel again and hugged him tightly.

“Boy don’t forget about us,” Then Kid cried again.

“Don’t worry Kid, I will never forget you both and I’ll make sure that not only we’ll survive but we will thrive as well since now I have magic. But right now my magic said that my name is not “Boy” anymore. My new name is Zeke so you will need to call me that. You and Chip also have new names. Your name will be Robert and Chip’s name is now Luke,” Ezekiel told Robert and he reiterated the name to his brother.

Ezekiel saw that Robert kept mouthing their new names and he was sure the boy was doing that to memorize the names. Then he asked Robert to disrobe so he could clean his clothes and clean the boy using magic and after several casting of the Prestidigitation spell, Robert’s clothes, and Robert himself were now clean.

“I have a question for you Robert. Are we allowed to hunt animals from the forest and can we sell it to the village market?” Ezekiel saw the boy thought about the question for a few seconds and then he simply nodded.

Ezekiel then told Robert to take a nap since they would go to the market later when they both woke up. Robert nodded again and joined his brother Luke on their bed.

The names that he gave his brother were important to him. Ezekiel’s father was named Robert and his grandfather was named Luke so he named his brother those names to honor his relatives.

While waiting for his brother to wake up, Ezekiel read the information on his character panel. After reading, he then planned what he would do next. He would sell the pheasant bird in the market and check the price of the items there and he would then use his last copper coin to purchase the best item that they could sell but more than likely, he would copy the protagonist of the anime that was based on shopping website skill and purchase either salt or a spice using the last copper coin.

He then thought of using some of the earned coins to purchase one more cantrip and a 1st level spell. Ezekiel then thought about how he could level up so he searched the information on the website that contained the rules of being a wizard in DnD 5th Edition.

It stated that there were two ways for him to gain experience, the first one was to gather achievements and the second was to kill enemies who intended to harm him. He hadn’t seen any magical creatures yet so he focused on gathering achievements but after searching he still didn’t know what kind of achievements would let him level up.

Ezekiel was so glad that even though his magic system was very loosely based on DnD, it only followed the framework, not the actual rigid rules of the DnD system. For example, in DnD he could only cast a spell when his level was higher than the spell but with his system, as a level 1 wizard, he could already cast level 1 spells even though he only had 1 level 1 slot. So the moment he turned level 2, he should be able to cast a level 2 spell.

He could also put in the same spell on the spell level slots but not the slot lower than the spell level. So right now, he has a total of 4 slots, 3 for cantrips and 1 for level 1. He could put Prestidigitation for all the slots but once he received a level 1 spell, he wouldn’t be able to put that spell on the Cantrip slots.

The impact of that was a little less due to the short cooldown of the spells in the lower levels but once he was high level, that feature would benefit him a lot. Since the only spells that he had were Prestidigitation and Fire Bolt, he put Prestidigitation in 1 of the cantrip slots, Fire Bolt in 2 of the Cantrip slots, and a Fire Bolt again in the 1st level slot. Unfortunately, the cooldown was based on the slots not the actual spell so that meant that once he cast the Fire Bolt cantrip located in the 1st level slot, its cooldown would increase to 2 minutes. But at least, now he could cast the Fire Bolt cantrip three times instantaneously, and then after a minute, he could cast them twice simultaneously, and another minute, he would be able to cast them thrice again.
