Chapter 36

The three of them were still on top of the building, and when Oliver glanced to the side, he could see that Wander now appeared to be attentively observing with the window open.

Oliver took a deep breath and then sighed as he scratched his neck, saying, "You know what happened to your friend just because you didn't kill me, but you still came to talk to me." Oliver lowered his hand and crossed his arms. "It's either a trap or you have a decent plan, isn't it?"

Zoe squinted her eyes, clearly uncomfortable with the situation, but Dylan approached, touching the girl's shoulder, and said, "We do, but to avoid any danger to Wander, we ask you to follow us."

"Quite suspicious, don't you think?"

"I know it seems that way, but you're stronger than before and managed to face the three of us. Now, we're down to two. The location will be another rooftop, but to avoid problems, I want Wander not to hear." Dylan removed his hand, still with a concerned look, and continued, "Just like you, we don't know everything the vampire master is capable of or his power, but we can tell you what we know if you promise to help us put an end to him."

Oliver furrowed his brows, continuing to stare at the two, but then he lowered his hands and sheathed his bow.

"Alright, I'll follow and hear what you have to say, but the moment you seem suspicious, I'll end you."

Zoe once again appeared uncomfortable and clenched her fist, but Dylan stepped in again, saying, "Believe me, we know." He looked at his companion and said, "Go ahead, Zoe."

The blue-haired vampire continued to stare for a few moments, but then turned and approached the other end of the building, leaping and transforming into a bat as she distanced herself from there.

Dylan followed and said, "Follow us, I promise we won't go too far."

Oliver continued to stare with suspicion, but when he saw Dylan transform, he followed.

Along the way, he held his bow in one hand and continued to follow the bats flying between the buildings, but they soon reached the city center.

The two transformed into humans on top of a tall building with the surroundings exposed, making it clear that it was a trap-free area, and Oliver landed again, facing the vampires.

Dylan looked at all the houses and buildings in the distance as the cold wind blew under their bodies, leading him to conclude, "This should be safe." He looked back at Oliver, who still held his bow. "We don't know the extent of the power of the vampire who turned us, so we decided to be cautious."

Oliver remained silent for a few seconds, which raised suspicion in the two, but then the vigilante sheathed his bow, once again blending it into his body, and said, "Alright, it's not a trap. There's no one else here, after all."

The vampires looked confused and still disbelieving, but Oliver showed a slight smile as he looked towards the staircase.

From a distance, he saw what the building was like, and with his enhanced hearing, he could confirm that there was no one hidden in the vicinity or on the staircase. Even if they were standing still, he would still be able to hear their breathing or heartbeat, but in the end, he just smiled and said, "I trust you a bit more now, but something is bothering me." Oliver crossed his arms, and Dylan turned to him. "You've been saying from the beginning that you want me to kill the vampire who turned you. Can I conclude that he's not the vampire master?"

"We can't say for sure." Dylan looked to the side, somewhat embarrassed, as he continued to explain. "We know the woman who turned us was a vampire, but we can't say with absolute certainty that she's the master vampire."

This book's true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience.

"Woman, I see."

Oliver closed his eyes, reaching a conclusion in his mind, but then he said, "I want you to explain something to me. How did she turn you and why did she do it? It doesn't seem like she's a total stranger, but you're willing to kill her for the sake of a friend. I know you're not lying, but you also don't seem like traitors who surrendered just because I'm stronger."

Dylan lowered his head, and Zoe walked away, distancing herself from the two, and sat near the edge of the building. The wind blew through her short hair as she seemed distracted.

"We never wanted to get into this mess, and we don't even know you, so we have no reason to hate you." With a deep sigh, for the first time, Oliver saw her without being angry or uncomfortable, and she continued, "We knew what we were getting into, but in the end, we still wanted to get involved."

She recounted the story of the three.

All of them were orphans, and after reaching adulthood, they had to leave the orphanage. For Zoe and Dylan, finding a job was already difficult, but the worst part was Wander's situation.

Two years before leaving the orphanage, Wander began to show weakness, and what seemed like the start of a simple flu turned worse.

As a result, after reaching adulthood, it was up to Zoe and Dylan to take care of their friend. After a whole year of work, Wander was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

The treatment was expensive, and it would only delay the progress of the disease. All the money had been spent just on the diagnosis, and in the end, they would have to gradually say goodbye to Wander.

At this point, Oliver was already suspicious of something, and his hypothesis was proven true.

A kind doctor offered a treatment, but implied a risk and made it clear that they would owe her a debt, and the price would be high.

In their desperation, they accepted without hesitation, and in the end, Wander was turned in front of them.

His improvement was immediate, and Wander managed to recover, adapting to life as a vampire. Everything seemed to be going well until...

"Some time ago... Wander started experiencing severe headaches and said it felt like the doctor was in his head." Zoe hugged herself, clearly uncomfortable, and said, "She gave him a command, he had to kill you, and there was no way to refuse, as she reminded us of the debt we had."

"Even when he tried to refuse, she seemed to be able to harm Wander and weaken him. Because of that, he had to come and kill you, or he would end up dying himself." With a deep sigh, he said, "We had no choice. If it was a choice between killing a stranger or letting our childhood friend die, we chose to take the risk."

Dylan concluded while Oliver maintained the same seriousness as at the beginning, but his forehead was furrowed as if he had more to say. In the end, he took a deep breath and sighed, saying, "You said she's a doctor and that she only turned Wander, but you're also vampires. Were you turned later?"

"No, in the end, she was clever," Dylan crossed his arms, lowering his head. "Apparently, she managed to control Wander and forced him to bite us and turn us, showing that she had greater power over him. He was forced to agree, and we believe she made some sort of pact with Wander."

"Pact?"

Oliver continued to furrow his brow, and Dylan went on.

"We didn't hear her voice even after being turned, and in the end, all Wander could tell us was that if he didn't kill the green vigilante, he would... die."

Once again, the wind blew around them, and Oliver had confirmation, squinting his eyes slightly. Dylan clenched his teeth and said, "We tried to kill you, and you have every right to refuse, but..." He clenched his trembling fist while Zoe continued to look at the city, seeming distant. "Please, help us free our friend."

"Since we returned from our first encounter with you, nothing happened. But after some time, his headaches returned, and it was as if he was personally communicating with her." Zoe's eyes emitted a faint glimmer as tears welled up, and then she lowered her head. "Since then, he has only grown weaker... we don't know when the next attack will come, but it will... and we don't know if he can endure that woman attacking him again."

Dylan's eyes welled up with tears again, and he wiped them away with his hand, while Oliver continued to stare.

"It's pathetic; we tried to kill you, and you can torture us all you want afterward... but we have no one else to turn to." He raised his head, still with slightly red eyes from crying. "Please, Oliver. Save us."

The wind ceased to blow, and Zoe looked back, while the two of them waited for a response.

Oliver maintained a serious gaze and didn't change his stance, then he began to move towards the edge of the building.

There, he saw the entire expanse of the city and sighed, saying, "I don't know what you expected from me with this sad story. I'm not a hero; I fight criminals for my own reasons." He looked up, seemingly lost in thought, as he continued, "Don't be mistaken."

In the end, Zoe clenched her teeth, looking down, and Dylan slowly lowered his head. But then, Oliver drew his bow, saying, "But don't worry." He knelt and rested his fist against his cheek, propping his elbow on his leg as he concluded, "I also do this because I hate scoundrels."

The two looked at Oliver with wide-eyed amazement, and in the end, the vigilante turned with his green eyes shining.

"Count on me."
