Chapter 13

The next day, Oliver walked wearing ordinary clothes and with a larger backpack on his back.

He walked calmly towards his college, already finding the building and entering it with his hands in his pockets.

His thoughts were distant and he rambled.

‘If I start wearing the coat all the time, I’ll end up generating even more suspicion.’ Oliver looked around and then back, seeing the backpack. ‘I’m only going to wear it on cold days, that way they’ll see me with the coat on and they’ll bother me less than the cape, I also have to avoid being seen with it.’

Little by little he saw the interior and arrived at the cafeteria, where the movement of people seemed slightly greater.

The tables seemed fuller and a low conversation could be heard.

Oliver looked towards the tables and noticed people looking at him, however, as soon as they noticed they were being watched, everyone looked away or turned away.

He raised his eyebrows in surprise for a brief moment, then he pulled his cell phone out of his pocket and saw his reflection as he looked for something strange on his face.

However, within a few seconds, he soon heard it.

‘It was him, wasn’t it?’

‘Yes, apparently he is being investigated.’

‘Since when does he study here?’

With the reasons appearing more and more, Oliver put his cell phone in his pocket and lowered his eyebrows, already understanding what was happening.

Soon he returned his hands to his pockets and headed up the stairs, heading to his classroom while rambling.

‘Conversations here spread like wildfire, some must have seen the police and heard my name. In the end, those police officers turned even more eyes and suspicions on me.'

After a few flights of stairs, he again arrived in his classroom where he noticed a strange silence in the atmosphere.

When he opened the door, he soon noticed more eyes on him, which soon disappeared as he even saw the teacher looking nervous about it as she hid her face in the book.

It was as if he was suspected of killing someone, making Oliver click his tongue and move, taking a chair further back, just pulling out his notebook again and starting it up.

Again he heard some people whispering to others, again commenting.

‘He looks grumpy.’

‘I hope it’s not dangerous.’

Little by little Oliver's expression showed anger, but thinking coldly he realized that there was no reason to be angry with them, after all the story itself was enough to drive some people away, making him think.

‘This is going to be a pain in the ass.’

After a while the class started, even though the atmosphere was heavy, Oliver took it as if it were a normal day, despite being uncomfortable.

When class ended, he got up and put away his notebook.

Even when leaving the room, some people avoided him and let him pass first, even though it was annoying, in the end he gained some time.

His routine continued and he went to the TV station, where he noticed an atmosphere similar to college.

From the beginning, some people kept looking at him and avoided eye contact, soon arriving at the main building where he worked and in the end, the same thing happened.

People avoided him and kept a certain distance, until he reached the table and saw the computer he was working on.

Oliver sat down and turned on the computer then, while opening his email box, he thought.

‘So far, they said they checked my work and college.’

As soon as his computer screen was illuminated, he once again saw the photo of his family as wallpaper, making him lower his eyebrows and calming down slightly.

He opened his work email inbox and noticed some notifications.

Running his eyes quickly over them, he noticed an atypical work that made him think.

'But what?'

What he saw were mostly file folders and simple documents selected for him to sort through, making him frown as he read while thinking.

‘It’s something that will take hours, no, days. I should look for reports and not...’

Little by little his record dropped and he noticed that it seemed to be just a long job to waste his time, it would be days of work in front of the computer, which would reduce his interaction and take up all his working hours.

With all that, the conclusion was obvious.

Lifting his head slightly, he noticed the same insecure looks that stared at him and wanted to keep their distance, making him lean his elbow on the table while he scratched his eyes irritably.

‘Good job keeping the victim anonymous, do these cowards even know I was the guy who was running away?’

In the end, he just stared at his computer screen and started doing what he was told.

Even after all his working hours, he still doesn't get even close to half of all the work.

He was released and went home with a frown as his thoughts seemed distant.

It was already dark and Oliver was getting off the subway at the station, walking with a group of people who were slowly dispersing as he took a different route than the usual one towards his home.

‘With all this, if they find something that can take me to my family, I will end up not knowing anything.’

Oliver remembered that he had been avoided throughout the workday, even during breaks, making him sigh as he continued to ramble.

‘In the end, this investigation was a real kick in the ass, I’m going to have to spend days in that file separation.’

As they continued, almost all of them went in different directions, until he approached his neighborhood, still walking while listening to the silence that was interrupted by some distant footsteps.

'If I call those guys, I doubt they'll do anything about it, after all, knowing that I was being investigated for something the day after that shooting gave them the wrong idea. This entire investigation is exaggerated and meaningless.’

When he entered the neighborhood where he lived, he sighed when he realized that from there it would be difficult to do anything.

Even the silence seemed louder as the distant footsteps faded and returned.

‘In the end, these guys just got in my way.’

In the end, his thoughts were nothing more than mumbles, after all, people were scared just because of what the police had spread, making him scratch his eyes again as he stopped next to a light that was green.

Even if cars didn't pass by, he would just stop for a moment and sigh in frustration, until he realized that the distant footsteps had stopped.

Inside his head he tried to find some reason why they were so suspicious, but in the end he heard a slight click as the light changed to yellow and then to red.

‘All this worry about me without having a history doesn’t even make sense.’

Again he moved again with a frown, until he heard the distant footsteps return, making him think.

'What is that?'

Oliver looked at the corners of the streets and didn't notice anyone, but little by little his memory cleared and he realized that since he had left the subway, those footsteps had been heard.

He frowned thoughtfully as he crossed the street, until he reached the other side and lowered his head in thought.

‘They’re following me.’

With his hands in his pockets he continued to walk home while thinking.

‘How disproportionate, I wonder if they did all this to try to find my... parents...’

A thought came to Oliver's mind for a brief moment.

Since the accident had happened, all the information he had found was only in the newspapers.

He had never found someone responsible for the case and no information had reached him, with the conclusion that made him lower his eyebrows, still frowning while he raised his hand to his chin, thoughtfully.

‘They suspect me.’

As he continued to walk, little by little Oliver's conclusions seemed to have greater logic.

The police officers who had arrived at his residence were aware of the case of his family's disappearance, but in the end they did not disclose any information about the case, they only commented briefly.

Oliver remembered their faces and the seriousness with which they treated him seemed greater, remembering that they had interrogated him with weapons on their hips.

Slowly everything became more obvious and he brought his hand to his face, rubbing his eyes as he thought.

'They must have stayed away while I was still underage, but now that I'm getting involved in something new, they seem to be trying to call. In the end, I am being accused of being the cause of what happened 4 years ago.’

Feeling a slight heat in his chest, Oliver squeezed the middle of his eyes even harder, until he lowered his hand and thought with himself.

‘If I turn around, I might end up seeing one and get into trouble. So I better just keep going.'

Still with his hands in his pockets, he continued to walk, while he heard the same distant footsteps appear and emerge from different regions, making him wonder how many people were following him.

Even though his feelings at that moment wanted to show anger, in the end he just raised his head with a distant look as he thought.

‘Now I understand a little more why they never told me anything about it, it was in my face this whole time.’

He let out a long sigh as he continued walking, clearly hearing the footsteps still following him while his own voice echoed in his mind with a smile on his face looking excited.

‘Okay, how am I going to get out of this?’
